A newly developed Kingfisher inspired robot. It usually flies over the water surface, but as it finds Sonic and Tails underwater, it will dart down at them.

Zoomer[1] (シューン[2] Shūn?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, kingfisher bird-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman that roams Sylvania Castle Zone.

Zoomers are based on Kingfisher birds, but have a similar appearance to that of Hummingbirds. Design-wise, they have almost egg-shaped bodies with no neck between their heads and torsos. Their torsos in particular are yellow with aqua blue upper chest areas, and they possess red claw-like feet near the bottom of their torsos. They also have a gray rocket exhaust on their bottom, and on their backs are an aqua blue, tailfeather-like flap covering their backs. They also have a pair of wings with adjustable flaps, white edges, and orange tips. Lastly, they have a round head with a pair of cartoonish black eyes, a long and thin gray beak with an orange lower beak, an orange line circling their heads like a brow, and white metal behind their eyes.

Sonic and Tails running past two Zoomers in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, Zoomers appear as enemies that are only encountered in Sylvania Castle Zone.

In gameplay, they fly in stationary positions above the local water surfaces. When the playable character is coming towards this Badnik however, it will attempt to dive at them before swooping back up to the surface. The player can perform either a Spin Jump or Spin Attack to defeat a Zoomer, although quickly running past these Badniks makes them relatively harmless. Upon their destruction, Zoomers will reward the player 100 points and release an Animal.

Powers and abilities[]

Thanks to their wings and rockets, the Zoomers are capable of flight, allowing them to easily dive bomb onto their enemies.

IDWZoomer

A Zoomer, from Sonic the Hedgehog #57.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, a singular Zoomer model and a horde of other assorted Badniks would be used by Dr. Starline to test Surge the Tenrec during one of her tests at Starline Base Sigma. However, the Zoomer and the other Badniks were easily destroyed by her.[3]

Later, during their escape from the Eggperial City, Sonic, Tails, and Belle were pursued by the Badnik Horde, with a Zoomer being among them.[4]

More Zoomers aided their fellow Badniks in defending Eggperial City from Sonic, who was now being aided by Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin on a mission from the Restoration to stop the city's expansion. While most of the Zoomers were easily defeated by the heroes, one Zoomer would manage to break the grasp of Sonic and Tangle, causing the latter and her two other accomplices to fall into the now mobile portal from the Eggman Tower. Some more Zoomers attempted to dive bomb Sonic after this, but Sonic managed to dodge them and quickly escape.[5] Later on, several Zoomers and Buzz Bombers would attempt to fight Sonic, Tails, Amy, Blaze, Silver, and Team Dark, but were later destroyed.[6] When Eggperial City began to collapse in on itself, the remaining Zoomers and Buzz Bombers attempted to fly away before the city exploded (though it is unknown if they successfully escaped or not).[7]

Trivia[]

  • The attack pattern of a Zoomer is a reference to the Kingfisher's technique of capturing prey.
  • Another bird-based Badnik from Sonic Advance 2 named Straw has a very similar attack pattern to the Zoomers. However, it is unknown if the Straws are related to the Zoomers or not.
