Zero is a character that appears in the Mega Man comic series, and the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs, published by Archie Comics. He is a Reploid from the year 21XX in an alternate reality.
Zero is a protagonist in the Mega Man franchise's Mega Man X series. In his mysterious past, Zero was created by Dr. Wily, but left incomplete and sealed away, much like Dr. Light did with X. Zero awoke in 21XX as a Maverick, until he was defeated by Sigma. Both were infected by a computer virus in the process, which pacified Zero but set Sigma on the path of evil. The reformed Zero joined the Maverick Hunters and befriended X; when Sigma began his rebellion, Zero and X teamed up to stop him. The two have fought at each other's sides ever since.[1]
History[]
Worlds Unite[]

Following a previous adventure, Zero and his teammates-including newcomer Axl-later located Sigma's latest fortress and launched an all-out assault to finish him once and for all. Zero and Axl ended up battling with a rebuilt Vile while X went after Sigma. Following the battle, the pair and X received unexpected help from the dimension-hopping Silver the Hedgehog, who helped them open a Genesis Portal so that they could pursue Sigma.[2][3][4] Unfortunately, they ended up on Seaside Island in a different dimension by mistake, but found unlikely new allies in the form of Sticks the Badger, Comedy Chimp, and Fastidious Beaver. Joined by the unlikely "Team Sticks", the trio of Hunters were led by them to this world's Eggman's lair. There, Orbot and Cubot were "persuaded" by Zero to open another portal, through which the unusual team then passed.[4]
Zero and his teammates eventually made it to Sonic's World as it was being merged with Earth 20XX of the past, and joined forces with the Freedom Fighters and Robot Masters. The group then boarded the Sky Patrol in order to pursue their campaign against Sigma.[5] A meeting was soon held aboard ship, and Zero joined fellow red robot Break Man in collecting X, Mega Man and Roll from the training room.[1] He later joined his teammates at the meeting, where they were interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Dr. Wily-who later noted that Zero looked like something he would create-Xander Payne, and Dr. Eggman. Informed of Sigma's whereabouts by the villains, the Sky Patrol set course for the Lost Hex. Along the way, Zero befriended fellow swordsman Antoine D'Coolette, though each claimed to have the better weapon. It was soon put to the test as the heroes faced the Mechaniloid army led by the Deadly Six.[6] During the fight, Zero and X realized that Sigma had to be using the power of the Genesis Portals to revive old enemies. Unfortunately, Robot Masters and Maverick hunters alike were then taken over by the Zeti, who forced them to attack their friends.[7] While crossing blades with Antoine, Zero did his best to get a panicking Axl back on task, assuring him that they were not gone Maverick. Fortunately, he and the others were returned to normal thanks to the Egg-Wily Uppity Robot Scrambler Cannon. He then joined Sonic in calling for them to press their assault on Sigma, but they were in the minority due to the group being weary from their previous battles.[8]
Unfortunately, the heroes would soon find themselves facing an even greater menace: an army of Mavericks created by Sigma and the villain himself in a gigantic new body.[8] The tyrant dispatched most of his forces to invade other worlds using the Genesis Portals, while a handful remained behind to finish the heroes off. Luckily, help arrived in the form of Sticks and the heroes of the world of Street Fighter, who dispatched the attackers. Given the chance to recuperate, the heroes then prepared to pursue their foes to various worlds, splitting up and-in the case of flightless combatants like Zero-boarding Extreme Gear. In small teams they set out to hunt down the Mavericks, while also recruiting heroes from the other worlds to their cause.[9] Zero and Bunnie D'Coolette in particular followed some to the World of Ghosts 'n Goblins, where Bunnie explained the crisis to the irate and confused archdemon Astaroth who incinerated the Mavericks. Zero and Bunnie then gained Arthur and the demon Firebrand as allies by Astaroth.[10]
The expanded force soon engaged Sigma and his defenses in battle, only for Sigma to unveil his ultimate form. Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man eventually managed to defeat him due to Wily and Eggman's interference, and Xander Payne later prevented Sigma's trip back through time. As such, Zero his comrades were returned to their own time, with Sigma's demise being attributed to X.[11][12]

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U[]
In Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, Zero appears as a collectible trophy. In addition, both versions contain a downloadable costume for the Mii Swordfighter, which equips them with Zero's armor and the Z-Saber.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Zero as an Assist Trophy, from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Zero appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When activated, he dashes and jumps around the stage for around 30 seconds, attacking the player's opponents with his classic three-slash combo, Ryuenjin, Kuuenzan, and Genmu Zero. He often performs Genmu Zero soon before he vanishes, and can even perform it midair. He would then say "Back to base!" when departing.
The Mii Swordfighter Costume based on Zero returns once again as DLC.
Personality[]
Compared to X and Axl, Zero is much more cold and aloof, preferring to keep his distance and openly distrustful. He is also a confident fighter and a noble warrior, though as well much more ruthless in battle, quick to strike down those who stand in his way.
Zero's dedication to stopping Sigma is admirable, but at times borders on obsession, causing him to drive others onward even in the face of exhaustion and injury. He is also not above intimidating others in order to accomplish the Hunters' goals. Underneath it all, though, Zero is capable of deep concern for those he cares about. He acknowledges X as both his best friend and the superior Maverick Hunter of the two.

Powers and abilities[]
Zero is a close-combat fighter, preferring to use bladed weapons and energy swords such as his most trusted weapon, the Z-Saber. Like X's Variable Weapon System, Zero uses a Command Arts style to mimic the moves of his foes to adapt them to his sword style.
Weapons[]
Zero possesses both the Zero Buster, a cannon weapon similar to that wielded by X, and the Z-Saber, a powerful energy sword of concentrated plasma that can cut through anything.
