The Zaririn (ザリリン[1] Zairin?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, crayfish-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance

Zaririn sprite

Zaririns are small, red Badniks based on real-world crayfish. They have round pincers, large black eyes and a tail fan at the end of their pleon. They are noticeably less mechanical-looking than other Badniks, as they lack any mechanical details.

Overview

Zaririn Badnik

A Zaririn lurking behind Sonic in Aqua Lake Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit).

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), Zaririns can only be found only in the underwater sections of Aqua Lake Zone, usually swimming back and forth or staying in one spot.

Zaririns do not attack the player unless they get close to one, upon where they simply swim into him. Zaririns can only chase the player for so long before retreating into their original positions, however. In high corridor sections with larger air bubbles, Zaririns lurk in each corner, where they can pop the air bubble if the player gets close to them. Despite their charging attack, they are easily defeated with the Spin Jump.

Like every other Badnik in the 8-bit games, Zaririns do not contain any Animals.

Powers and abilities

Zaririns are excellent swimmers, thriving in underwater locations. However, they cannot chase their targets long enough before retreating into their original positions.

Trivia

  • "Zaririn" is a corruption of zarigani, meaning "crayfish" in Japanese.
