Template:Character Yawa (ヤワ Yawa?) is a human resident of Mazuri who appears in Sonic Unleashed. He is the rowdy and talkative grandson of Gwek and possibly the elder's biggest fan. He looks very much up to Gwek and always holds him and actions in high regards, due to his grandfather's (unknown to him) overly exaggerated tales about his past heroic deeds, which he always eats up.

History

PS3/Xbox 360

While living in his village, Yawa would listen to his grandfather Gwek's rather exaggerated tales about the adventures he had in his youth. Yawa, however, believed wholehearted in all of his grandfather's stories, no matter how far-fetched they were, and came to greatly idolize Gwek, believing him to be a great man. At some point, Yawa ventured out into the savannah to punch out some elephants, but ended up getting lost. Fortunately, Yawa made it back to the village without any incidents. At some point after Dr. Eggman established his base in Mazuri, Yawa managed to take a look on the doctor's base, though the sight of it made him uncomfortable.

During the events of Sonic Unleashed, after the Earth was shattered by Dark Gaia's awakening, Yawa met Sonic the Werehog and Chip when the duo first arrived in Mazuri, and told them about how he had seen Eggman's base.

Not long after Sonic the Werehog, Tails and Chip returned to Spagonia with Professor Pickle, Yawa and his village were attacked by Dr. Eggman in his search for the Gaia Temple. Yawa and the rest of the village's men stood as the front line of defense against Dr. Eggman's Egg Fighters, and Yawa demanded of the doctor, though somewhat nervously, to know who he was. All the while, Yawa noticed how calm Gwek appeared in front of Eggman, which only increased his respect for the elder. After Kwod hit Eggman with a rock, Yawa prepared for the worst, but fortunately, Yawa and the other villagers were save by the timely arrival of Sonic the Hedgehog, who managed drive Eggman's forces off. As the doctor left, Yawa remained solemnly watchful, while the rest of village thanked Sonic for saving them. After everyone in the village had settled down, Yawa approached Sonic and told how impressed he was at his grandfather not even flinching in the face of Eggman, and called him a great man.

After Sonic and Chip left the village to find Eggman, Yawa followed the duo without them knowing it, and bore witness to Sonic's victory over the Egg Beetle, before returning to the village. When Sonic and Chip returned after restoring Mazuri's continent, Yawa met up with the duo and told them in amazement how he had seen the battle, and that he definitely did not want to up Sonic.

A while later, Yawa met Sonic and Chip again when they passed through his village. Having heard stories about how the two of them traveled across the world, helping people, Yawa told the duo that they were amazing due to what he had heard, before asking them where they were going next. As Sonic told him that Chun-nan was their next stop, Yawa admitted that he had never heard of this place, but responded enthusiastically that it sounded exciting.

A while afterwards, Yawa learned that Gwek had recently step down as the village elder and began to travel across the world. Yawa, however, could not understand why his grandfather just decided to quit being the village elder without rhythm or reason, though he had faith it had to be for a good reason. He therefore decided to follow his grandfather in secret, determined to find the reason for his choice.

Yawa continued to follow Gwek, and eventually arrived in Chun-nan. While remaining hidden from Gwek, Yawa studied his grandfather's action from afar. While observing Gwek, however, Yawa met Sonic and Chip again. He told the duo to be quiet when they tried to talk to him, however, so they would not give away his presence, and he explained how he was following Gwek and his reasons for doing so.

When Gwek eventually decided to continue his travel, Yawa followed his grandfather to Spagonia, where he continued to observe him from afar in hiding. As he saw Gwek just standing in one place for a long time, Yawa deduced things such as that Gwek was getting in touch with the planet’s energy, was silently conversing with the spirits of the wind or just standing in deep personal contemplation. These deducements only left Yawa even more impressed at his grandfather, and he was amazed by his grandfather's (assumed) amazing inner balance. While watching his grandfather in Spagonia, Yawa was met by Sonic and Chip once more. However, again, Yawa told them to be quiet, and explained to them his current actions. Nevertheless, Yawa filled Sonic and Chip in on what he had deduced from Gwek by observed him, and told them about how great he thought Gwek was and about how you could just feel the unwavering determination emanating from him. At the time Gwek returned to Mazuri from his travels, Yawa had come to the conclusion that his grandfather stepped down as the village elder to undertake a great journey of enlightenment and intense spiritual vision to build up the power to protect the village, which only made him even more amazed at Gwek. After making it back to Mazuri, Yawa met Sonic and Chip again when they paid another visit to the village. Yawa told the duo, with great pride, that his grandfather was the greatest and what he believed was the reason for Gwek stepping down as the elder, before stating that he knew for certain that it was all for the good of the village.

Sometime afterwards, despite what he had come to believe, Yawa decided to confront Gwek to get some answers. Yawa asked his grandfather directly why he decided to step down as the elder, and was surprised to hear that Gwek choose to retire because he realized that he could not handle the job anymore after Eggman's attack, and did not go on a spiritual journey for the greater good of the village, as Yawa originally believed. Yawa, however, did not lose any respect for Gwek, but was rather amazed at his grandfather as he had him totally fooled all this time.
