The World Grand Prix, also referred to as the EX World Grand Prix, is an Extreme Gear tournament hosted by Dr. Eggman in Sonic Riders and Sonic Free Riders. It is a competition for Extreme Gear riders around the world to race against each other to see who is the fastest on Extreme Gear. They are mainly involved in the storylines of these two games.
Game appearances
Sonic Riders
The EX World Grand Prix first appeared in Sonic Riders. The known competitors were Team Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna), Amy Rose, the Babylon Rogues (Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow and Storm the Albatross) and several E-10000G robots. By ensuring the Babylon Rogues' participation and charging each contestant a Chaos Emerald as the price of admission, Eggman successfully manages to bring the emeralds into proximity with Jet the Hawk's ancient family heirloom: a cubic control key to surface their ancient home-world, Babylon Garden. After Jet wins the tournament due to Wave the Swallow sabotaging Sonic's Extreme Gear, the Emeralds activate the cube and Babylon Garden rises up from beneath the dunes of Sand Ruins. The doctor intends to obtain the treasure of Babylon Garden which is revealed to be the Magic Carpet.
While unrelated, Sonic Riders features a World Grand Prix gameplay mode where one or two player(s) race through the five courses of one of the two teams' storyline (Heroes Cup and Babylon Cup) with six/seven other computer-controlled opponents. Each competitor earns points after each race which is based on the racing position they finished in; a higher placing results in higher points. At the end of the World Grand Prix mode; the player(s) are awarded a bonus amount of Rings and an emblem (Bronze, Silver, Gold) based on their overall position of the tournament. Notably, the computer-controlled opponents use their character's default Extreme Gear but the player(s) can choose whatever Extreme Gear they would like to use. During World Grand Prix mode, the player cannot restart the course or the mode via the Pause Menu.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
While the storyline of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity did not take place in a World Grand Prix, it was mentioned, in Team Heroes' Story mode, by Sonic saying that he will see Jet at the next World Grand Prix.
In Normal Race, there is a "World Grand Prix" gameplay mode which is similar to the World Grand Prix mode in Sonic Riders except the player(s) race through six courses of a chosen cup (Heroes or Babylon).
Sonic Free Riders
The World Grand Prix returns in Sonic Free Riders, serving as the main setting of the game's plot. Instead of just two teams, Eggman pits two more teams in this World Grand Prix tournament. While the competitors settle their old rivalries and/or disputes by racing each other, Eggman's motives in the tournament is to capture the racing data of all of the competitors to create the "fastest Extreme Gear" using Team Dark's new member, E-10000B. Much later on, when Eggman races against the competitors on this Gear, the doctor loses, claiming that the data he collected "didn't help him at the slightest" and E-10000B reveals itself to be Metal Sonic who then challenges his organic doppelgänger to a race. Sonic beats Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic flees from the scene. Since Eggman didn't have any actual prizes to distribute to the winners, the tournament comes to a close with no confirmed winner but everyone agreed that they had a fun time.

Trivia
- In Sonic R, Dr. Eggman hosts a World Grand Prix. Instead of Extreme Gear, the competitors run on foot. (except for Amy and Dr. Eggman who used vehicles).
- In the World Grand Prix mode of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Mobius Strip is not playable despite being playable in the Story mode. This maybe because the Heroes' storyline only had six courses as opposed to the Babylon's storyline's seven.
