Worker-Bot[1] is a term in the Sonic the Hedgehog television series. It is a term applied to roboticized fauna. Following the creation of the Roboticizer for medical purposes, Dr. Robotnik corrupted its usage by using it to transform numerous beings on Mobius into legions of Worker-Bots programmed to serve him and his empire—they are still alive, however. One of the major goals of the Freedom Fighters is to return the Worker-Bots to their original selves, but so far, success has been limited.[2]

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Sir Charles Hedgehog Satam

Charles as a Worker-Bot.

Worker-Bots are essentially robotic beings that are apparently made of the same components as artificially constructed robots. However, each Worker-Bot retain a basic resemblance to their original organic self; Sir Charles, for example, still resembles an anthropomorphic hedgehog and possesses his mustache, but otherwise, his body and clothes are entirely mechanical.

Characteristics and culture[]

Natural Worker-Bots are created without free will upon their transformation, rendering them mindless automatons.[3] Following Dr. Robotnik's takeover and exploitation of the Roboticizer however, Worker-Bots were programmed to be obedient and unquestionably loyal to the doctor himself. As such, all Worker-Bots are tireless workers dedicated entirely to carrying out Robotnik's wishes. When perceiving an enemy to Robotnik, the Worker Bots will immediately attempt to ensure their enemy's capture, either directly or indirectly.[4] That is not to say that Worker-Bots are entirely mindless, as they are capable of thinking and planning on their own; Charles, for example, while bringing in Antoine and Tails, was able to set a trap for Sonic using Mega Muck so he could bring in him too.[2]

As Worker-Bots, their original personas retain awareness of what they do, but are unable to take control of their mechanical bodies under normal circumstances.[2] A Power Ring can return restore a Worker Bot's free will and control over their body, but only temporarily.[4] For a Worker-Bot to fully regain control of their body, their original persona must assert dominance through sheer willpower and strong ties, as seen in the case of Charles and Muttski.[2][5] Some mental disciplin is arguably also required for a Worker-Bot's original self to stay on control, as Muttski, who is a simpler animal, reverted back to his Worker-Bot persona a while after regaining his free will.[5]

Enslaved Worker-Bots have glowing eyes and speak in monotone, robotic voices. Free-willed Worker-Bots on the other hand have less illuminated eyes and speak in a normal manner and tone, but are otherwise able to make their eyes and voices match that of enslaved Worker-Bots.[2]

Interestingly enough, Worker-Bots retain the ability to ingest food and are able to produce tears.[6]

Powers and abilities[]

SatAM Tool Hands

Charles transfiguring his fingers into screwdrivers.

Worker-Bots possess some unique skills of their own. Sir Charles, for example, is able to transfigure his fingertips into screwdrivers and store floppy discs inside his torso. Worker-Bots also seem to have greater-than-average strength, as a Worker-Bot Charles was able to easy carry two people at the same time.[2][7]

History[]

TV series[]

Past[]

The first Worker-Bots that came into being were those Sir Charles used his newly-invented Roboticizer on to help the elderly live longer. However, he destroyed the machine when he discovered that the Worker-Bots had been robbed of their free will. Dr. Robotnik later recreated the machine, and, during his takeover of Mobotropolis, used it to transform eighty-five percent of the city's population into Worker-Bots, including Charles.[8] Robotnik would subsequently employ the Worker-Bots he created as his slaves, using them as his workforce for his various projects and factories.[4][5]

As Robotnik spread his dominion across Mobius, he would create more Worker-Bots out of everyone he either imprisoned or conquered, including most of the Wolf Pack and almost all of the dragons on Mobius.[9][10] In fact, excluding the Freedom Fighters and the terapods, nearly every lifeform on Mobius had been converted into Worker-Bots around 3225.[11]

While the Knothole Freedom Fighters were still children, Worker-Bots caught their nanny, Rosie, out in the Great Forest, which led to Rosie's own roboticization.[8]

Season one[]

Heads11

Sonic reunited with a free-willed Worker-Bot Muttski.

One time, a group of Worker-Bots were walking into their workplaces in one of Robotnik's factories, unaware that Sonic and Tails were spying on them. However, a Worker-Bot Muttski discovered the duo and tried to attack them. While Sonic was able to make Muttski remember him by giving him commands and restore his free will, Muttski's Worker-Bot programming eventually took control of him again, prompting him to attack Sonic once more, who was left with no choice but to flee the scene.[5]

Later, another group of Worker-Bots, which included Sir Charles, got escorted to the Crystal Mine by Swat-Bots. After arriving there in a train however, Charles got cut off from the others when Sonic came to rescue him. However, Charles sounded the alarm and attacked Sonic, forcing the Knothole Freedom Fighters to stop the alarm and restrain Charles. In an attempt to get Charles back, Sally gave him a Power Ring that restored his free will. Charles then had a happy reunion with the Freedom Fighters, before leading them into the Crystal Mine to stop Dr. Robotnik's forces from removing a giant Energy Crystal, which would destroy Mobius' eco-system. While the others went to the control room to take control of the Energy Crystal-hoisting crane, Charles, Sonic and Bunnie took control of the mine's Dinobot. Despite some close shaves, and the Dinobot getting incapacitated, Charles and the Freedom Fighters were able to prevent the removal of the Energy Crystal and escape the Crystal Mine. However, by then, the Power Ring's effects wore off, causing Charles to revert back to his Worker-Bot persona. Sonic and co. were then forced to leave Charles behind.[4]

Season two[]

Game Guy 210

Ari's Freedom Fighters having been turned into Worker-Bots.

In spite of promising Ari to release his Freedom Fighters if he caught Sonic in the Fortress, Dr. Robotnik went ahead and turned them into Worker-Bots anyway. When Ari later came to him, Robotnik mocked him by showing him his roboticized comrades.[12] Later, Charles was working on the Shriek-Bot until Robotnik spotted Sonic and sent the Shriek-Bot after him. Later, while upgrading the Shriek-Bot, Charles received a Power Ring from Sonic that restored his free will. He then went to Knothole Village to be de-roboticized with the De-Roboticizer. However, the device malfunctioned, and Charles soon reverted back to his Worker-Bot persona. While keeping Charles contained though, the Knothole Freedom Fighters fixed the De-Roboticizer, and used it to turn Charles back to normal. However, the effects were only temporary, and Charles soon turned into a Worker-Bot again. He proceeded to kidnap Tails and Antoine, and when Sonic came to save them, he got caught in some Mega Muck Charles had set up as a trap. Charles continued then onward to Robotropolis with his prisoners until Sonic caught up to them. There, he managed to get through to his Worker-Bot uncle, allowing him to regain his free will. However, he opted to stay in Robotropolis as a spy for the Freedom Fighters instead of returning to Knothole Village. When the Shriek-Bot then arrived, Charles pretended to fight Sonic, who soon escaped, so that Robotnik would not suspect his new state of mind.[2]

After later sending a secret message to the Knothole Freedom Fighters, Charles received a letter from Sally saying that they could not find Sonic. Charles thus met up with her, and they started looking for Sonic together throughout Robotropolis. When they discovered that Sonic was now helping Snively find Knothole Village, Charles investigated the matter while Sally warned Knothole Village. Discovering that Sonic had been hit by a Memory Scrambler, Charles followed Sonic and Snively to Knothole Village, where he told his allies of his discovery. After they had restored Sonic's memory with a Power Ring, Charles and Sally canceled the Stealthbot attack on Knothole while Sonic erased Snively's memory. Charles then went to Robotnik's HQ with Sonic and Sally where they changed the location of Knothole to the Great Swamp and fled just as Dr. Robotnik returned.[13] When the Knothole Freedom Fighters later carried out a mission in Robotropolis, two of their own got caught and turned into Worker-Bots. Soon after, Sonic and Sally tried to prevent Robotnik's takeover by going back in time with the Time Stones.[3] Although they ultimately failed with their plan, they did succeed in preventing Rosie from becoming a Worker-Bot.[8] With the aid of Dulcy and Sonic, Charles later snuck an eavesdropping bug into Robotnik's HQ. Seeking later the last dragons on Mobius, Robotnik had a Worker-Bot dragon brought to the Mind Probe in order to look for weaknesses in dragonkind. Meanwhile, Charles learned of Robotnik's plan and warned the Knothole Freedom Fighters, whom he teamed up with to prevent Robotnik's roboticization of a Mother Dragon.[9] Later, Charles learned of Robotnik's upcoming Doomsday Project, which he passed onto Sonic.[14]

Drood Henge 165

Worker-Bots excavating a Deep Power Stone at Drood Henge.

Later, Charles acquired a recording between Robotnik and Snively concerning Drood Henge, the Deep Power Stones and the Doomsday Project, which he passed onto Sally. Sally tried getting some answers on the former two from Nicole, but Charles explained that those files had been time-locked until she came of age. Meanwhile, at Drood Henge, Worker-Bots were helping excavate the ruins. Eventually, the Worker Bots found the first Deep Power Stone, which Robotnik came in person to pick up.[7] Charles later picked up info on the Fuel Tankers in a factory, but was almost discovered by Snively. Back in his hideout, Charles would argue with Sonic over whether or not he should return to Knothole Village. After later providing the Knothole Freedom Fighters with info on a Fuel Tanker convoy, Charles and Sonic tried to replace the eavesdropping bug in Robotnik's HQ when they discovered it was broken. During the mission however, Antoine appeared and got caught by Snively, so Charles instructed Sonic to save Antoine before be cracked during the interrogation. After returning to his hideout after replacing his bug however, Charles got caught by Robotnik, who had discovered Charles was a spy. Before Robotnik would make Charles tell him where Knothole Village was with a special device however, Sonic rescued Charles. Afterward, in spite of Sonic's protest, Charles resumed his spy duties in Robotropolis under a new cover.[6]

On the night of the Doomsday Project, Robotnik had all his Worker-Bots stationed at the Doomsday Machine. Charles later came up with the plan of using the Deep Power Stones to destroy the Doomsday Machine when the Freedom Fighters' initial attack failed. As Sonic and Sally later tore the Doomsday Machine apart, the Worker-Bots would flee from the site.[15]

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Worker-Bots are referred to as Robians, though it is frowned upon by some who feel that they should not be regarded as being anything other than regular mobians.

Sonic Robian family

Sonic and his Robian family in the Archie Comics.

The first Robian to come into being was Jules Hedgehog when Sir Charles tried to treat his war wounds with the Roboticizer. However, the procedure robbed Jules of his free will. Whem Jule's wife, Bernadette Hedgehog "accidentally" fell victim to the device shortly after, Charles turned all of his notes over to Julian Kintobor and retired out of disgrace. Dr. Ivo Robotnik later made many modifications to the Roboticize and used it to enslave nearly half of Mobius. These roboticized mobians, or "Robians", were used as slave labor, often sent to capture their own families. Some devices, such as Power Rings, Sword of Acorns and Neuro-Overriders, could restore one's free will, but Robotnik added a "Brain Burn Thru" process to better ensure control of the Robians. Due to the complicated nature of the device, a Robian could usually only be de-roboticized by the same device used in the original transformation. The majority of all the Robians were later de-roboticized by the Bem, who used an advanced version of the de-roboticization process. As a side-effect, those former Robians were now immune to further roboticization. However, Jules remained a Robian, as he was too gravely injured when he was transformed to risk reverting back. The side-effects of the Bem's work was later partially undone by the first Genesis Wave, with the first Robian to re-surface in the aftermath being Mecha Sally.

In the reality created when the multiverse was rebooted, Robians existed at some point in the past, created by the Roboticizer. However, these Robians were somehow reverted back to normal while the Roboticizer was rendered defunct under unknown circumstances.
