The Wispon is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It is a series of different weapon gadgets made for weaponizing the Wisps' powers. They are used by the world's military organizations and other factions, both good and bad.

Description

Appearance

The Wispon is a gadget-like weapon. Each standard model comes in a distinct design that combines the design and color scheme derived from a specific Wisp breed's anatomy with portable tools, like handguns, hammers, drills, and similar mechanical devices.[1][2]

The only exception to the standard Wispon design is the Variable Wispon, which is not based on any known Wisp breed.

Features and abilities

The Wispons' signature function is their ability to hold Wisps inside them and harness their energies to power themselves; without a Wisp inside it, the Wispon is useless.[2][3] The standard Wispon model can only draw power from the Wisp breed that it is designed to match however. This means, for example, that the Burst Wispon can only harness a Red Wisp's power. The exception to this rule is the Variable Wispon, which can use the power of more than one breed of Wisp.

Each Wispon model possesses an offensive combat function. Most of them are only able to fire lasers, while others possess unique combat functions that match the respective Wisps used to power them, like the Burst Wispon functioning as a flamethrower and the Lightning Wispon using electricity.[4] Generally speaking, the standard Wispons are built to have a widespread attack range for clearing out crowds of robots. The Variable Wispon on the other hand is designed for precision shots.[3]

History

Past

The Wispons were built to clear out crowds of robots using the Wisps' power.[3] After a bunch of Wisps settled down on Sonic's world, where they would help out the residents of the planet whenever they could, the Wispons ended up being one of the ways the friendly aliens could help out in particular.[2]

The Eggman War

Some time ago, there was an acquaintance of Sonic the Hedgehog who put the Wispons to good use.[1]

Rough and Tumble save town

Rough and Tumble wielding Wispons, from Sonic the Hedgehog #3.

During the Eggman War between the Resistance and the Eggman Empire, Whisper the Wolf would use her Variable Wispon to aid Resistance troops and soldiers on the battlefield. She would continue to wield the Variable Wispon as her primary weapon after the Eggman War was over.[3]

Just before the Eggman War ended, there were two mercenaries named Rough the Skunk and Tumble the Skunk who used their Wispons to save Barricade Town, a town that distributed Wispons, from Dr. Eggman's forces. Once they were let inside Barricade Town however, the mercenaries took all the town's Wispons for themselves, along with the Wisps needed to power them, effectively giving them the power to rule the town.[2]

Fallout

Wielding Cube Wispon

A town citizen wielding a Cube Wispon, from Sonic the Hedgehog #1.

When a Badnik force attacked a town, a resident used a Cube Wispon in an effort to try fighting them. The resident, however, got overwhelmed, but thankfully Sonic showed up on time to defeat the Badniks and get the resident back on his feet with his Cube Wispon in hand. Sonic then came across the town's militia, who were wielding Wispons of their own, and instructed them to join the fight too.[1] When a Badnik force attacked another town, the local militia and several of the residents armed themselves with Wispons which they used to fight off the invading robots. After listening to the commands of Amy Rose, the armed citizens fell back to the Town Hall, where they, on Amy's mark, successfully destroyed a wave of Badniks with the Wispons.[4]

Having discovered that the Wispon distributions in Barricade Town had ceased, Knuckles went to check it out, with Sonic soon joining him. After it came to blows between Sonic and Knuckles and Rough and Tumble, the latter duo tried using their Wispons against the heroes. However, their Wispons were left without power when Sonic convinced the Wisps in them to betray Rough and Tumble by leaving their Wispons. After the two villains were defeated, the town's Wispons were returned to their owners.[2] Soon after, the militia in Tangle the Lemur's home town made use of Wispons in an effort to combat the Badniks that were invading their town.[5]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman and the Battle for Angel Island

The Variable Wispon became known to the public when Sonic and Silver found Whisper using it for an attempt to break down a door in one of Dr. Eggman's bases. During the following battle with some Badniks with Sonic and Silver by her side, Whisper dropped her Variable Wispon, prompting her allies to save her.[3] Whisper later put her Variable Wispon to good use when she joined the Resistance on a mission to Angel Island to liberate it from the Eggman Empire by force.[6]

When a Zombot outbreak erupted in Sunset City, the city's defense force would use Burst Wispons to keep the advancing Zombots at bay while they organized and evacuated the survivors.[7]

Trivia

  • The Wispons are based on the objects of the same name that debuted in Sonic Forces.
  • Unlike the Wispon in the games, (which only needs a Wisp to use its Color Power) a Wisp is required for the Wispon to work at all.
