— Whisper the Wolf, Sonic the Hedgehog #58

Whisper the Wolf (ウィスパー・ザ・ウルフ[6] Wisupā za Urufu?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is a heroic anthropomorphic wolf and a member of the Diamond Cutters, a rapid-response Restoration team. She is aided by her own personal team of Wisps.

Concept and creation[]

Whisper was conceptualized by writer Ian Flynn, while artist Evan Stanley took care of the character's design.[1]

WhisperForces

The Avatar model that inspired Whisper, from Sonic Forces.

Inspiration for Whisper came from Sniper Wolf from the Metal Gear series, the Major from Ghost in the Shell and Kopaka from Bionicle.[7] Whisper's overall design is derived from one of the many models the female wolf Avatar from Sonic Forces could assume.[8] Whisper's early designs were somewhat different than the final version however. For example, she had blue hair and fur. She also had a more ostentatious costume and she did not originally have her iconic mask.[9]

Whisper's mask is inspired by Japanese Kabuki masks.[9] The idea for her mask came from the Kabuki mask Costume piece that the Avatar could wear in Sonic Forces (which was one of Evan Stanley's favorite Costume pieces), and Stanley thought a similar mask would fit Whisper's personality. After seeing the mask concept, Ian Flynn had the idea of making it a sniper scope and a Wisp communication device, which instantly clicked.[8]

The reason why Whisper's eyes almost always appear closed is for expressing her emotions. In comics and animation, eyes that can see while appearing closed can be shorthand for a few things, including indicating that a character is wise, that they are constantly keeping a close eye on everything, or that a character is dealing with a lot of emotional pain. And all of those are kind of true for Whisper. Plus, when she does open her eyes, it lets the reader know that what she is looking at is very important.[10] It is also inspired by the traditional depiction of kitsunes with eyes appearing to be closed. Sega of Japan approved of Whisper's eye design despite her being a wolf, due to wolves serving the same role as kitsunes in older Japanese folklore, as Japanese wolves are extinct in Japan.[11]

Appearance[]

Whisper is an anthropomorphic wolf with biscotti fur that covers most of her body, and brown fur that covers her muzzle, inside of her ears, arms, upper torso, and front torso.[12][13] She has thick black eyelashes and cloudy white fur around her eyes that resemble a mask. Her eyes are cadet blue, although they are often closed to the point of squinting. She wears light gray eyeshadow and has a long, bushy tail which ends in several tufts of fur sticking out in various directions. She also has a black nose, long-pointed ears and quite long hair that she keeps tied at the back in a ponytail with a black hair tie, save for a long, thick hair bang that covers her right eye. Her pointed cheeks are a little fluffy.[14] Her fangs protrude from her mouth which is often in a natural frown.

For attire, Whisper wears a cream-colored tube top, light gray leggings, and a dark gray cloak, in which she keeps six Wisp canisters. The cloak also has black and dark gray pockets seen on the shoulders.

Whisper wears an outfit geared towards combat. This includes dark gray arm sleeves with black elbow pads, dark gray and light gray gloves with visible black claws, and dark gray knee sleeves with black knee pads. She sports military-fashioned black, dark gray, and light gray boots. She can sometimes be seen wearing her cat-like ornate Concealer, which is cream, dark gray and light gray in color. Three holes are seen at the right side of the mask and a blue "eye" on the left side (though the color of the "eye" can vary depending on which Wisp power the Variable Wispon is using).[15]

Past[]

Diamond Cutters

A photo of Whisper and the other Diamond Cutters, from Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper #3.

Long ago, Whisper was part of the original Diamond Cutters, an elite anti-Eggman mercenary team. The team was comprised of herself, Smithy the Lion, Slinger the Ocelot, Claire Voyance and Mimic the Octopus. During the Eggman War and before the team’s final mission, Claire told Whisper to stay back, despite Mimic's insistence that all of them would be needed on the field.[16] While scouting around the exterior of the Eggman base, Whisper, who kept watch on her teammates via the video feed in their masks, was shocked when she watched them being led into a fatal trap and left to die by Mimic, who secretly betrayed the group and aligned himself with Dr. Eggman. Filled with grief, Whisper hid herself within a tree to avoid being lured by her traitorous teammate. Eventually, he took her discarded Wispon and his own mask and left, to present it and satisfy Eggman. Once the coast was clear, Whisper entered the facility to rescue the rest of her late team's Wisps. She returned and retrieved Smithy's prototype Variable Wispon from their abandoned base. From that point forward, with only the old Diamond Cutters' Wisp partners alongside her, Whisper vowed to never forget her fallen teammates, nor forgiving Eggman and Mimic for what they have done.[2][16][17]

The Eggman War[]

During the war against Eggman, Whisper aided the Resistance from the shadows, often turning the tides of battle and saving the lives of many Resistance soldiers, including Silver the Hedgehog. Despite her efforts, she never joined the Resistance or revealed herself to them, as she preferred to work alone, afraid of losing any new friends she might make like she lost the Diamond Cutters. Because of this, she gained a reputation among the Resistance soldiers, and became known as the legendary "Guardian Angel of the Battlefield".[2]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman[]

WhisperIntroducesHerself

Whisper introducing herself, from Sonic the Hedgehog #8.

One month after the end of the Eggman War, Whisper infiltrated one of Eggman's bases at the same time as Sonic did for reasons unknown, and secretly assisted the hedgehog from the shadows. First, she jammed a security gate before it closed on him, and afterward, she took out a giant Spina that Sonic and Silver failed to notice.[2] Further into the base, she found Big searching for Froggy, but the cat was oblivious to her presence and she moved on.[18] Afterward, she tried through the sealed door into the base's computer room with her Variable Wispon, using several of its modes to no avail. Sonic and Silver soon arrived and attempted to make contact with her. Startled by Silver's overbearing greeting, she retreated to the rafters using her Wispon. After Sonic apologized and introduced himself, her Wisps emerged and greeted Sonic. Reassured by Sonic's approach and her Wisps' warm response to him, she hesitantly emerged, removed her mask, and introduced herself as "Whisper" (which Silver mistakenly took for a request).[2]

With all three of them joining forces, Silver opened the security gate, revealing E-107 Theta and a host of Spinas on the other side, which Whisper engaged along with Sonic and Silver. Using her Wispon, Whisper repositioned herself on a perch during the battle and zapped Theta with a laser to little effect. Theta returned fire, obliterating her perch and sending her crashing to the ground. Trapped beneath a pile of scrap, Whisper was helpless against an onslaught of encroaching Spina. However, her Wisps emerged, eager to defend her, but Silver intervened before they could do anything by freezing the Badniks and launching them into a wave of missiles launched by Theta. Silver then freed her from the rubble and helped her to her feet. In reference to her Wisps, he commented that she had built quite a team, and that he would be honored to be part of it. Whisper replied with a bashful," Maybe".[2]

As the heroes regrouped, Whisper spotted a Eggman computer terminal. Enraged, she tried to smash it with her Wispon. When Sonic frantically asked her to wait until they secured the vital intel stored in it, she took it quite harshly. Agreeing to stand down, she affixed mask, and withdrew into the background as Sonic and Silver warned the Resistance of Neo Metal Sonic's true plans.[2]

Battle For Angel Island[]

Whisper was soon after brought to Resistance HQ. There, she and the Resistance's other allies were informed that the Resistance needed their help to liberate Angel Island, which had been conquered by Neo Metal Sonic and turned into a flying fortress. To make matters worse, Neo had also secured the Master Emerald for himself on the island. Eventually, Whisper was assigned to help two of the assembled group's factions with breaking the Egg Fleet's control over Angel Island while Sonic and Knuckles confronted Neo Metal Sonic.[19]

ResistanceAttacksOverlord

On the voyage to Angel Island, Sonic thanked Whisper for aiding them despite her aversion of crowds and asked her to stay safe during the battle. She affirmed and reciprocated his sentiments before he left to give her space. While tinkering with her Variable Wispon though, Whisper gave Shadow, who had come along on this mission for his own reasons, an angry glare. Later, when their ship approached Angel Island, the Egg Fleet shot it down. Fortunately, Whisper and her allies got off the ship before it crashed. Landing then on Angel Island, Whisper and Tangle were assigned to protect Tails while the fox cub did "something smart". Soon after, Whisper was locked in heavy combat.[19] Eventually, Whisper covered for Tangle when she had to redirect an Egg Fleet vessel's cannon. Using some prisms to redirect her Variable Wispon's laser when some Spinas attacked, Whisper was able to take all the Spinas out. When the Resistance later took out the last wing unit that had been attached to Angel Island's shoreline, Whisper used her Variable Wispon's Hover Mode to regroup with the others on an Egg Fleet battleship that Tails had secured.[20]

In the meantime, Neo Metal Sonic harnessed Sonic and Shadow's bio-data in addition to the power of the Master Emerald to transform into Master Overlord. As he captured Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow and moved closer to the Egg Fleet battleship, Amy ordered Whisper and the team to move in for a full-on assault. When Sonic then distracted Master Overlord by mocking him, Whisper shot Master Overlord in the face with her Variable Wispon. On Master Overlord's body, Whisper worked with Rouge to damage Master Overlord's wings. Master Overlord soon had enough though, and shook the Resistance members off of him, only for Silver to save everyone with his psychokinesis. Soon after, Knuckles managed to remove the Master Emerald from Master Overlord, and restored the Master Emerald to its rightful place. Silver then brought everyone down on Angel Island. Without the Master Emerald, Metal Sonic was out of commission. On the ground while Whisper played with her Wisps, Silver and Blaze thanked her for her aid.[21]

As everyone got ready to leave the island, Whisper found friendship with Tangle. When Sonic came by to talk to them, Sonic asked Whisper if she was able to make any friends. Tangle tried to confirm this by urging Whisper to tell the joke about a toaster she told her earlier. Whisper instead shyly put her mask scope back on, leaving Tangle to wonder if this was due to something she said. As Sonic took off, he apologized to Whisper.[22]

Bonds of Friendship[]

Whisper later came to Spiral Hill Village to visit Tangle, which pleased the lemur very much. Tangle thus gave Whisper a tour of the town, including places like the salon and the bakery, where Whisper bought and ate a croissant. Tangle then brought Whisper to the Mineral Museum to meet her best friend, Jewel the Beetle. There, Tangle introduced Whisper and Jewel to each other, telling Whisper that she and Jewel grew up together. Jewel then explained to Whisper that Tangle collected many items during her adventures which Jewel used to curate her museum. Soon though, the sky started to go dark outside. Whisper immediately after pulled out her Variable Wispon as she had heard a scream come from outside. A moment afterward, the Babylon Rogues broke into the museum and began stealing everything. After Storm accidentally kidnapped Jewel however, Whisper and Tangle began pursuing the Babylon Rogues after they retreated to their blimp. Through collaborative efforts, Tangle and Whisper managed to get onboard the Babylon Rogues' blimp. There, they confronted the Babylon Rogues and demanded Jewel to be handed over. As Jet and Wave argued over how to deal with their hostage situation though, Tangle secretly took their stolen loot back. When Storm then ended up throwing Jewel out of the blimp, Whisper jumped out of the blimp so as to not lose another friend. Tangle soon jumped out after to join them. On the way down, Whisper hung onto an injured Jewel while Tangle hanged onto her. Whisper then used her Variable Wispon's Hover Mode to gently lower them down. Afterward, Whisper helped her friends restore the Mineral Museum and its exhibits. There, she fist bumped with Tangle after the latter thanked her for her aid.[23]

Tangle & Whisper[]

WhisperVTangle

Whisper soon found out that Sonic was apparently causing trouble in various places and was thus being targeted. When she found Sonic, he revealed himself to actually be Mimic. The shapeshifter was targeting Whisper at the restored Eggman's orders, in order to finish the job he had started with his murder of the other Diamond Cutters. Whisper overpowered Mimic and tracked him to Spiral Hill Village where she suspected he was targeting Tangle. Whisper failed to shoot Mimic on the ground so she took to the rooftops with her Variable Wispon's Hover Mode while ignoring Tangle, who wanted an explanation. There, she activated her Variable Wispon's Spikes Mode. However, she was unable to shoot Mimic as he talked to a villager in his Sonic form so that she could stand in the way of Whisper's shot. Whisper angrily moved to another rooftop and took aim at the shapeshifter, only for him to shoot her a sinister look. Whisper was almost immediately after tackled by Tangle. She kicked her off but the lemur reluctantly persisted in fighting her. Tangle managed to snatch Whisper's mask scope off of her and believed she had stopped Dr. Eggman's "mind control". The annoyed Whisper told Tangle that she was not being mined controlled and that the person she was shooting at was not Sonic. Taking her mask scope back and pressing a few buttons on it, Whisper put her mask scope on Tangle to show an earlier discussion between her and the fake Sonic. Not wanting to reveal anything about him in public, Tangle agreed to talk with Whisper about it and lead her back to the Mineral Museum. There, Whisper explained to Tangle and Jewel that Mimic was a mercenary shapeshifter who had recently taken on the form of Sonic to wreak havoc and was potentially targeting Tangle, as well as others. Jewel noted this was a perfect opportunity to join Whisper in her hunt for Mimic so that Tangle could have an adventure. Whisper initially refused Tangle's help, but she was soon convinced by her Wisps, especially the Blue Wisp, to allow Tangle to join her. Not too long after, the trio heard a "thunk" at the door and discovered a note that told Whisper to meet Mimic so that they could end things once and for all.[17]

MimicTauntsWhisper

Whisper and Tangle soon arrived at an abandoned Eggman Empire bunker. Whisper tried to scan the inside with her mask scope but to no avail. She was interrupted by Tangle pretending to sneak around loudly and shushed her. She told Tangle that there was no activity on the outside and she could not scan the inside, meaning that they were walking blindly into Mimic's trap. Tangle believed that they could handle him since they outnumbered him but realized that Mimic still had the home advantage. After Whisper confirmed that she wanted to fight Mimic sooner than later, Tangle told her that they would be careful and asked her to stop worrying as much. Tangle then asked if Whisper had a history with Mimic, to which she confirms and then told her to be alert as Mimic is dangerous and manipulative. The duo went through the back entrance of the bunker and began to sneak around. Tangle decided to quicken their pace by searching for Mimic at a higher point, which slightly annoyed Whisper. As she progressed, she heard what appeared to be Jewel's voice. Whisper continued to sneak around until she met up with Tangle again. When she asked for proof that she was the real Tangle, the latter showed her a cut on her shirt and claimed that Mimic had shapeshifted into Jewel to draw her out and tried to swipe at her. Tangle then hurriedly had Whisper follow her around a corner to where Mimic had run off to. Whisper followed but was nearly hit by an Egg Hammer wielding a wrecking ball. Tangle, who was actually Mimic, told Whisper that he could both replicate clothing and make it look damaged. Whisper struggled to fight the Egg Hammer but soon held her own once she put her mask scope back on. She managed to destroy the Egg Hammer using her Variable Wispon's Rocket Mode and quickly turned her attention to Mimic. The shapeshifter threw a bomb at her, which she dodged, and tried to shoot at her with his laser gun. Whisper managed to shoot the gun out of Mimic's hand and stood over him, demanding to know where Tangle was. Mimic instead taunted Whisper by shapeshifting into the other members of the Diamond Cutters, claiming that she was not there to protect them. Whisper was slightly caught off guard but persisted and hit Mimic, reminding him that he sold them out in the first place. Mimic then revealed to her that Tangle was locked in a safe with little air left. He also revealed that there were bombs set to detonate in the bunker quite soon.[24]

Met with an ultimatum, Whisper set off to find the safe. Once she found it, she used the Spikes Mode on her Variable Wispon to open it. Tangle tumbled out and Whisper quickly let her know that the bunker was about to explode. As the bombs started to set off, Tangle pushed Whisper into the safe and closed the door behind the two of them. The facility was completely destroyed but the safe remained unscathed. After the girls exited the safe, Whisper told Tangle to go home. As Tangle protested against this decision, Whisper snapped and exclaimed that she would not and could not lose another friend. She went to solemnly sit down on the safe, with Tangle following and asking her to tell her about her past. Whisper wiped her face and agreed to tell her everything.[24]

Whisper explained that the Diamond Cutters were an anti-Eggman group and there were five of them: herself, Mimic, Slinger the Ocelot, Claire Voyance, and Smithy the Lion. She showed Tangle a picture of them together, with the latter expressing how cool they looked. Whisper explained that the video for their masks were networked to let them review missions and study each other's perspectives. The wolf decided to let Tangle see them in action by letting her use her mask to view a past mission of them taking down an Eggman base. Tangle enjoyed the spectacle but was soon interrupted when she discovered that Whisper's mask let her talk and understand the Wisps. Whisper explained that Smithy was a genius and designed the team's gear and made the masks give the Diamond Cutters the ability to communicate with each other. Whisper went on to say that the Variable Wispon was actually a prototype built by Smithy that everyone on the team was meant to have so that they could all use the powers of the Wisps. Whisper then solemnly stopped, which prompted Tangle to ask her to tell her what happened as it was clearly eating her up inside. Whisper initially refused, which made Tangle ask to see the footage on her mask; she told Whisper that she understood if she was not able to confront her past right now, but the more she knew about it, the more she would be able to help her. With encouragement from her Wisps, Whisper entered in the details and handed Tangle her mask to see the Diamond Cutters' final mission.[16]

HugsT&W

After watching the details of Whisper's tragic past, Tangle, horrified of what she had seen, took off Whisper's mask and softly handed it back to her. Whisper explained that when the coast was clear, she went back into the Eggman base to rescue the rest of the team's Wisps and then went to team's base to take Smithy's prototype Variable Wispon. Tangle was at a loss for words and became frustrated. After taking a deep breath, she asked why Whisper would hold onto that footage, to which the wolf replied "Never forget. Never forgive." Tangle then realized that this was why she continued to fight as the "Guardian Angel of the Battlefield" and later joined the others to fight Neo Metal Sonic. She also realized that it must have been difficult for her to see Shadow on the mission as well. Tangle lastly asked why Whisper chose to leave her behind knowing how Mimic could toy with and asked why she did not ask someone like Sonic to help her even if she did not want the lemur's company. Whisper told her that she was the first real friend she allowed herself to have since the incident and could not stand the thought of losing anyone again. Tangle teared up and declared that Whisper was her friend as well and friends looked out for each other no matter what. When Whisper reminded her that Mimic nearly destroyed them both, Tangle stated that he would get double the payback and make him regret all of his actions. As Tangle helped Whisper up, she told her that she knew his tactics now and he would not catch her off guard again. When Whisper noted that Tangle could not be discouraged, Tangle replied saying that Whisper needed positive energy and her friends needed avenging. With this, Whisper hugged the lemur and thanked her. The wolf then noted that the trail was cold and it would take a while to find Mimic again. Tangle disagreed, believing Eggman would want solid proof about their deaths; thus, Mimic would come back and they could give him a taste of his own medicine. Whisper then left a message for Mimic, saying that they will finish the fight where they started.[16]

Whisper and Tangle traveled to the former Diamond Cutters base on the Clove Sea. They plotted to have Mimic view playbacks of the Diamond Cutters of how much he meant to them. Later, the girls found a squadron of Badniks coming their way. Whisper shot a large battleship Buzz Bomber in the sky, which forced it to crash down onto the second Buzz Bomber battleship. As Whisper explained to Tangle that the Badniks were only decoys, the latter realized that it was now her cue to confront Mimic. Tangle did offer to help fight the Badniks and try to protect the base but Whisper declined, reassuring her that it was fine. After Tangle left, Whisper destroyed the docks with the Variable Wispon's Rocket Mode to send a horde of Badniks into the sea. Following a short hug with her Orange Wisp, Whisper turned to face the remaining Buzz Bombers. After she managed to defeat all of the Badniks, Whisper went inside the base and hit Mimic's dagger out of his hands with the Variable Wispon's Cube Mode before he killed Tangle. Mimic tried convincing its former Blue Wisp partner that it hated using violence and asked if it would let itself be used by Whisper on him. Whisper pauses for a moment then attempts to swing at Mimic, only for the Blue Wisp to leave the Wispon at the last minute and turn away in shame. This did not stop Whisper and she continued to struggle with Mimic. Mimic managed to push Whisper back and attempt to use the Variable Wispon on her but he was stopped by Tangle coiling him up in her tail.[25]

WhisperTakesAim

Whisper then pointed her Variable Wispon at Mimic's head, ready to shoot him, but she was stopped by Tangle; the lemur told her that shooting Mimic would be an event that would remain with her for the rest of her life and suggested that it would be worse for Mimic to live on with regret. Whisper gently turned to the wall where the other Diamond Cutters' masks were and looked at them with sadness. She then said that Tangle was correct and the Diamond Cutters were done. The wolf hugged the Blue Wisp and told it that she did not blame it. When Whisper asked what they would do with Mimic, Tangle suggested taking him to Tails. At the fox's workshop, Tails created a Test Chamber to imprison Mimic in and stated that he would not be able to escape. When Mimic declared that he would break free soon, Whisper warned him not to as they would "bury" him deeper each time. Mimic tried taunting Whisper some more, saying "If only the others could hear their bubbly little Whisper now." Tangle added to the conversation, saying that even if he did escape, he would have to deal with Eggman's wrath after wasting several of his Badniks. Tails assured Whisper that he would have the cell transported to the nearest prison as soon as he could, which comforted the wolf and told him not to open it, no matter who was inside. Whisper and Tangle thus said their goodbyes to Tails. Outside, Whisper told Tangle that she was going to keep fighting until Eggman was gone and asked her if she wanted to join. Tangle accepted the offer but wished to first of all take time off back at home. With their newfound bond, Whisper and Tangle fist bumped and said their farewells. As Whisper walked off, she played with her Blue Wisp.[25]

The Last Minute[]

Sometime after the encounter with Mimic, Whisper accompanied Tails and Tangle on a mission to Central City so that he could research a cure for the Metal Virus. While at his lab, Whisper watched in shock as Dr. Eggman's Faceship arrived in the city to distribute a large batch of the virus into the city. Whisper and Tangle took it upon themselves to begin evacuation of the city while Tails stayed behind at the lab to research a cure. About an hour later, Whisper and Tangle had managed to guide a number of survivors down to Central City Bay while they fended off several Zombots in the city. At some point, Whisper came to aid Tangle, who was trapped on a lamp post with several Zombots below her, and knocked them back with her Variable Wispon. As Whisper kept up the pressure by using her Variable Wispon's Rocket mode, Tangle tried to call for backup, but received no response from Restoration HQ, and Silver, busy dealing with a Zombot outbreak in Ice Paradise, could not reach them in time. Whisper and Tangle pressed onwards regardless but were forcibly sidetracked by a horde of Zombots. After the girls moved to a rooftop, Whisper suggested that Tangle call Tails, which the lemur proceeded to do. They were soon given an update by him that he had nearly completed a cure for the Metal Virus and would be able to provide back-up soon. After a while, Whisper and Tangle decided to go back to the docks, with Tangle once again trying to call Tails. The fox cub managed to clear a path for the duo with the Cyclone and told them that he would provide cover while they tended to the survivors. Soon after, at the docks, a Rescue Shuttle came in for a landing. Whisper and Tangle guided the survivors aboard while they also watched out for Zombots. Once everyone had safely boarded, Tails rejoined them, but the trio received the bad news from Amy that Restoration HQ had fallen.[26] Whisper then found out that Tails had indeed lost the data he gathered for a cure for the virus and witnessed Tangle receive an alarming call from Jewel.[27]

WhisperReaction

Whisper reacts to the news about Tangle, who got infected by the Metal Virus from Sonic the Hedgehog #24.

Apparently, Eggman had attacked Spiral Hill Village with the Metal Virus; this prompted the Restoration to fly over there and help with evacuation. Whisper, Tangle and Espio were tasked with distracting the Zombots in town while Tails and Cream helped evacuate the uninfected villagers there. Soon, when Sonic arrived in Spiral Hill Village after an encounter with Dr. Eggman and Dr. Starline in Barricade Town, Whisper helped him barricade a group of Zombots inside a building by using her Variable Wispon's Spike Mode to cut down a lamppost and have it fall down onto the building's doors; following this, Sonic gave a thumbs up to her and she returned it. Soon, Whisper was found by Tails and was told that Amy had called for a retreat. Sonic shortly arrived but he brought the unfortunate news that Tangle had gotten infected by the Metal Virus and chose to stay behind to give the Restoration time to leave. This sent Whisper into hysterics, causing her to yell out Tangle's name and attempt to run back into the village to save her. Amy held the wolf back, and since Sonic could not aid them due to being partly infected, the Wisps emerged and dragged her back onto the Rescue Shuttle. As the shuttle took off, Whisper cried into Cream's lap and her Wisps tried to comfort her.[28]

All or Nothing[]

The Rescue Shuttle eventually went to Angel Island. While there, Dr. Eggman, Dr. Starline and Metal Sonic had abruptly arrived via a portal after a run-in with the Deadly Six. While the others discussed current events, Whisper decided to take aim at Eggman from outside the shuttle. She was soon stopped by Cream, who was carrying Omega's head, as she stood in the way in the shot. Cream told Whisper that though she shared her hate for Eggman, she felt like she would give anything to get them back and asked Whisper if they were worth it. In response to this, Whisper took off her mask and cried; Cream held her and promised that she and Omega would stay by her side so that she would not be alone. Later, Whisper watched Eggman and Tails build a Multi-Portal Generator using the Warp Topaz so that they could go and fight the Deadly Six and take the Chaos Emeralds from them. Sonic returned from his run and had come up with a plan for who should be assigned with who and what Zeti they should go after. He explained to Whisper that she will head off with Silver to take on Zor, explaining that they should handle him at a distance due to him being described as "weird". Once Eggman and Tails managed to get the coordinates set in, Whisper and Silver went off into the Warp Portal that would lead them to Zor. The two arrived in Orchardville and watched Zor act gloomy on his owl mech. Silver explained that he would grab him with his powers while Whisper covered him from a distance, which she accepted.[29][30]

Whisper28

Whisper prepares to shoot at Zor, from Sonic the Hedgehog #28.

While Silver engaged Zor, Whisper stayed hidden in a tree and handed out a few prisms to her Wisps, aside from her cyan one. The Wisps then moved into position around the battlefield. Soon, when Silver gave the signal, Whisper used her Wispon in Laser Mode to shoot at the prisms that the Wisps were holding for her shot to bounce off of them and hit Zor. This successfully knocked the Chaos Emerald out of his chest and into Silver's possession. After the hedgehog destroyed Zor's owl mech, he used his psychokinesis to carry himself, Whisper, the Wisps and the Chaos Emerald back to Angel Island. When they arrived, along with most of the other survivors, they found that Zavok had found their location, drawing nearer to the island in the Faceship. He had also led a large horde of Zombots to the location as well. However, thanks to the efforts of Rouge, the Faceship was brought down and fell into the ocean, crashing down onto the horde of Zombots. This did not stop Zavok as he simply emerged from the rubble and became Giant Zavok with his Chaos Emerald. As retaliation, he shot a fireball at the island with his mouth. He then grabbed a large handful of Zombots and threw them onto the surface to deal with the survivors, which included a number of familiar faces to Whisper.[31]

While helping to defend the island, Whisper found herself face-to-face with a Zombot Tangle, and struggled with fighting against her friend. Eventually, with the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Super Silver, they were able to warp the entirety of the Metal Virus away from the world and to the sun. This gradually turned all of the Zombots, including Tangle back to normal; after witnessing this, Whisper and her Wisps leaped on Tangle to give her a big hug, with the lemur asking if she missed her.[32]

Out of the Blue[]

IdwSonic32 Group Hug

Whisper is pulled into a group hug by Tangle, from Sonic the Hedgehog #32.

When Zavok tried attacking the civilians down below, Whisper went down from Angel Island to the surface and attacked the Zeti with the Variable Wispon in Cube Mode. Eventually, Zavok was restrained by Silver's psychokinesis. Later on, Whisper saw Metal Sonic impale Gemerl with his hand and shot at him with the Variable Wispon. However, Metal Sonic blocked the attacks with his Black Shield, dropped Gemerl's body and flew away with Orbot and Cubot.[33] Some time later, Whisper was invited by Tangle to her party in Spiral Hill Village. While there, she firmly monitored the Babylon Rogues since they had attacked the town before. Tangle told Whisper to leave them be since they helped save the world and she did not want to have another fight in her home town so soon. When Whisper accepted this, Tangle said that they should get the Wisps some food to eat but also asked if they even ate. They were soon interrupted as the party was crashed by Eggman arriving in a large mech with the intent of destroying everyone.[34] Whisper proceeded to take part in the attack on Eggman's mech. Eventually though, Eggman was defeated when Sonic returned. After Eggman had departed, Whisper was embraced by a group hug arranged by Tangle.[35]

Zeti Hunt![]

Whisper would later join Tangle and Jewel in Restoration HQ. When the Deadly Six eventually attacked the HQ, Whisper and her friends barricaded themselves in the control room.[36] Using a hole in the control room's door, Whisper helped Sonic fight the Deadly Six by shooting them with her Variable Wispon. At the same time, Tangle provided her with a stable shooting position. Ultimately, however, Zavok used his powers to sabotage Whisper's mask scope, preventing her from interfering with the fight any further. Though the Deadly Six were eventually defeated by Sonic and Tails, Whisper and her friends soon revealed that Dr. Starline had kidnapped Belle in the meantime.[37]

Trial by Fire[]

Having learned that Mimic was free, Whisper decided to leave Restoration HQ so that her presence would not pose a danger to the others, since Mimic would surely use them to get to her. As she and her Wisps were leaving however, they were discovered by Tangle. Learning of Whisper's decision, Tangle tried to make her stay, but Whisper stood by her choice and left.[38]

Another Grand Adventure for Jet the Hawk[]

Whisper was on a mission to take out a Super Badnik and sent her Cyan Wisp to find food. It returned with a calzone and Whisper ate it as she aimed the Variable Wispon at the Badnik. Jet the Hawk then flies in on his Type-J and yells at them, catching Whisper off guard. Jet says the "squid" stole from the calzone and she will make it up to him. Whisper stands up and and confusingly asks if she will. Jet says again she will and says they wasted his time and says she owes him gems/jewelry and a calzone. The Cyan Wisp gives Jet a banana instead, which Jet doesn't want.

Whisper tells Jet to be quiet while the Badnik is around, but Jet slams the banana on the ground and yells he can't hear her. The Super Badnik then grabs Jet and he yells to let him down. Jet then tells Whisper to use the Type-J to get him. Whisper tries to get on, but it flies up and she holds onto it for dear life. Jet yells at her to just stand on it and it will balance itself. He goes onto ramble about how he doesn't think the Extreme Gear is hard to use and keeps boasting about himself. Whisper tells him to stop talking as she balances and the Cyan Wisp gives her the Variable Wispon. Jet says some knowledge his dad told him, but Whisper yells back at him to be quiet and shoots the leg of the Super Badnik, causing it to fall into a trap with Jet still in its hand. Jet is impressed by Whisper's skills and proposes to work together. Whisper walks away, leaving the Type-J behind, and says she's busy. Jet can't hear her and asks her to speak up. The Cyan Wisp then returns what is left of the calzone to Jet.[39]

Overpowered[]

Whisper was in Central City when Surge started a rampage in it. She responded to the attack and was quick to take her head-on. Whisper not impressed by Surge's abilities early on and used all the Wisps in her arsenal to attack her. Whisper was shocked to see Surge being able to absorb the Wisp's hyper-go-on power. Surge was able to get close to Whisper and got in a struggle. Her Pink Wisp went out of the Variable Wispon and Surge grabbed it. Whisper yelled out for her not to use her Wisp as Surge stomped on her. Surge did absorb the Wisp and Whisper made a tactical retreat. Surge quickly went back on her tail and, with a tear in her eye, she asked her Blue Wisp to help her. Whisper hit Surge as hard as she could with the hammer mode of her Variable Wispon, but it had no effect on Surge; only making her disappointed in the hit. Surge then grabbed the Wispon as Whisper asked her to give her Pink Wisp back. Surge declined and slammed Whisper on the pavement, breaking the Variable Wispon.[40]

Surge was able to take all the other Wisps Whisper had except her Cyan Wisp one. As Surge talked about which Wisp she is going to use to end her, Whisper grabbed a sharp shard of the Variable Wispon. Whisper then attacked Surge hand-to-hand using the shard. Surge then used the Blue Wisp to drop a cube on Whisper. Sonic and Tails then arrived on the scene and Tails took Whisper into an alley as Sonic fought Surge. Tails told her to stay low and they will take her to the lab after the fight. Whisper took her mask off, revealing the anger on her face and the tears in her eyes. She told Tails she needed her Wisps back.[40] Tails had to leave Whisper to help Sonic, but they were both being outmatched by Surge. Whisper made it back onto the street and whistled to get their attention. She then threw out some prisms and sent her Cyan Wisp to Sonic, making him transform into Cyan Laser. After Sonic put of a fight, Surge was able to take the Cyan Wisp from him. This caused Whisper to cry out and move to fight Surge, but Tails held her back and said they can't stop her unless they drain her power. Whisper went to her knees and said she wasn't giving up.[41]

Later, Whisper went to Tails' Lab after the fight with Surge was over. She sat in a corner with her broken Variable Wispon, looking sad. Belle went up to her and introduced herself. She then offered to repair the Wispon, which Whisper accepted without saying anything.[41]

Urban Warfare[]

While recovering from her fight with Surge, Sonic returned Whisper's Wisps and her Variable Wispon was repaired.[42] Shortly after, she was joined a new team Lanolin was assembling, along with Tangle. Later, Whisper was in a meeting with the team and Jewel to ask Sonic to join them on a mission to investigate Eggperial City. During the meeting, Tangle told her she was happy to be with her again and Sonic asked if she was recovered from her last fight, which Whisper said yes. When Sonic agreed to join them, he asked for a team name. Tangle suggested Diamond Cutters, which Lanolin liked. Whisper looked visibly angry about that name being chosen.

The group left Restoration HQ and made it to Dr. Eggman's city, with Whisper scouting with Lanolin. When they noticed there were no major defenses, traps, or patrols, Sonic and Tangle went ahead and ran into the city. Lanolin complained about their reckless behavior, but Whisper said that's just how they are. Lanolin stated they couldn't beat the odds forever, and Whisper thought to herself she knew that better than anyone. The two joined Sonic and Tangle in fighting Badniks, with Whisper destroying a Red Eye with her Cyan Wisp mode. After chewing out Sonic and Tangle for their actions, Lanolin asks how Whisper handles Tangle; Whisper replied she doesn't. Concerned, Tangle asked if there was something they needed to talk about, but Whisper tells her no, leaving the whole group feeling uneasy.

Lanolin went on to survey the city and Whisper let her use her Green Wisp to take some readings. Sonic transformed into Green Hover to get a better view. Tangle begged Whisper to let her try that, but she politely said "maybe later" and took the Green Wisp back to rest. The group concluded the city was repairing and growing by itself and they went down into the tunnels bellow the city to investigate. Once they got down to the lowest point, Whisper blew a hole in the ground with her Variable Wispon and Lanolin and Tangle looked inside. They discovered Eggman was strip-mining everything to build the city. Sonic and Lanolin argued over what they should do next. Whisper said they can fall back and she can stay in scout. This causes Tangle to snap at her, saying she won't because she had a close call recently and she needs to stop going solo. Whisper was shocked by her reaction, but they had no time to dwell on it. A portal suddenly appeared next to them and they ran off as it chased them.

Tangle grabbed Whisper with her tail and Sonic pulled them along as Whisper got some shots on some Badniks. A Zoomer broke Sonic and Tangle's grip, causing Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin to fall into the portal.[43] The trio was then taken into a parallel world where they could see and hear others, but could not interact or be seen by anyone. Tangle was trying to cheer up a distraught Lanolin and she asked Whisper for help. She then coldly asked Tangle why she chose the name the team after the friends she lost. Lanolin said she thought Whisper's old team disbanded after the war. Whisper clarified they were betrayed and destroyed. Tangle was stumbling her words and Whisper asked her to just spit it out. Tangle apologized to Whisper for naming the team Diamond Cutters, saying her old team were close friends and were cool and competent. She wanted their relationship to be like that so they wouldn't drift apart again.

Whisper then remembered leaving the Restoration and Tangle behind, losing her Wisps and Wispon, and Belle and Sonic helping her recover them. Tangle cried and said she was caught in the moment and Lanolin said they can change the team's name. Whisper admitted her team was there for her then and now only their Wisps are what's left of them. Whisper said she has been walking away from the people trying to help her. She realizes the only person not trying to help her is herself. Lanolin said she understood if Whisper can't trust people after being betrayed. Whisper clarified only one person took her life away from her, not the Restoration or anyone else. Whisper promised she isn't going to let his fear rule her life anymore. Whisper apologized for being a bad friend and teammate and asked for patience for her to move on. Lanolin coyly asked for her to be patient with her being bossy and inexperienced. Tangle mumbled something with her Tails wrapped around her and Whisper pulled them down. Tangle was about to restate it, but Whisper said she knows what she said and told her "[She] will".

The group joined hands and Whisper told them they can remain the Diamond Cutters, as her old team would be honored for them to continue their cause. Tangle then gave them a group hug, and Lanolin says there has to be a hard count on the number of group hugs, which Whisper agreed. Breaking the hug, Lanolin asked how Whisper's old team would handle their situation. Whisper said there was no chain of command and they relied on each other. She then said they would ask Claire for insight and if she saw nothing, they would scout the area. Tangle guesses Whisper is going to scout for them, then Lanolin comes up with a plan to gather intel for Sonic while he worked to get them back to reality. Whispers said they should go to the central control tower since it has the most critical resources and the Diamond Cutters move out.[42]

The Diamond Cutters made it into the command room of the tower where they saw Eggman with Orbot and Cubot overseeing the attack on the other heroes who arrived. The moved to see the monitors and Lanolin told them to find some useful information. They then saw on a monitor Shadow Androids attacking Sonic and the others. Tangle remarked that's what happened to the first Diamond Cutters. Whisper looked on in horror and sunk to the ground; the trauma of her friends deaths coming back. Tangle comforted Whisper and the wolf said it's too late for them. Before Whisper could finish the thought, Tangle said it won't happen again because she won't let it and promised they're going to figure this out. She gave Whisper a hug and Lanolin came over to comfort Whisper as well.

The team saw Eggman restart the city's power because of a power surge caused by Shadow. Whisper speculated it was a Chaos Overload. As Eggman expressed his anger that he can't see where the Restoration members on, Lanolin tells Tangle that surge nearly disabled the entire city. As they start to devise an idea, they suddenly start to become visual to the real world again. Lanolin tells them not to panic and they freeze when Eggman sees them. Eggman says he has seen them before and they ran into his Spatial Displacement Trap. Eggman says they almost escaped when the power dipped, but reveals his new models that can shatter their atoms into oblivion. Whisper shoots Eggman with her Wispon, but it goes right through him. Eggman says her Wispon has been separated from normal space and she can't hurt him. The hexagonal trap surrounds Whisper and Tangle runs to save her, but the trap closes in on Whisper and traps her as she yells.[44]

Thanks to Tails disabling the computer system, Whisper was able to escape her trap. While Lanolin was distracting Dr. Eggman in the control room, Whisper knocked him away with the Blue Hammer mode of her Wispon, freeing Tangle from his grip. Tangle started to cry, overwhelmed with the emotion of her teammates coming back, and Whisper comforted her. She was able to escape the tower with the Diamond Cutters—floating away with the Green Hover mode of her Wispon. Whisper and the others made it over to the Giant Fake Chaos Emerald tower Shadow made. Tangle got a hold of Sonic and Whisper launched themselves into the air by using the Orange Rocket mode of her Wispon. Tangle then flung Sonic into the tower, destroying it. The group narrowly escaped certain death thanks to Shadow teleporting the Fake Emeralds into the sky before they exploded. Later, Tangle and Whisper joined the other heroes on a picnic.[45]

Misadventures[]

DuojoinsDiamondCutters

"Duo" joins the Diamond Cutters, Sonic the Hedgehog #62.

Whisper was drinking coffee during a meeting with the Diamond Cutters at Restoration HQ. Lanolin was reviewing their mission and asked Whisper how she organized her old team. Whisper told her they all started as volunteers and wasn't a formal arrangement until later. A moment later, Duo the Cat walked in on their meeting and gave a pitch for him to join the team, which Whisper was impressed by. After Lanolin and Tangle asked some questions to him, Lanolin asked Whisper if he should join the team. Whisper said it was better for him to learn during peacetime and they had to start from somewhere. They welcomed Duo to the team, and he followed Tangle to find a dorm.[46]

Whisper went with Tangle to see Belle and pick up her Variable Wispon. Belle commented on how she wanted to tinker with it more, which made Whisper nervous. As they left, Whisper bumped into Silver and he apologized, saying he was zoned out. Tangle asked what was on his mind and said they wouldn't judge him. Silver explained how he felt he needed purpose and Whisper offered him to train with the Diamond Cutters. Tangle agreed and they all went to Green Hill to train with Lanolin and Duo. Lanolin told them their mission was to work on coordinating moves and communication. Whisper went to the bottom of the Canyon with Tangle and Lanolin, while Silver raised some rocks. Silver was bringing the rocks to them but Duo kicked him and he lost hold of them, which Whisper saw. Suddenly, a Giant Chopper broke out of the canyon wall and started to flood the valley. Lanolin asked Whisper to fly them out, but she said it would be too slow. Tangle used her tail as a grapple and they swung out of there. Lanolin told them to split up and she flew with Whisper using the Hover Mode of the Wispon. Lanolin destroyed rocks with her own Wispon and they reached higher ground. They went down and found Duo next to the Chopper, but Silver was still in it and he got out, accusing Duo of ditching him. Lanolin defended Duo and criticized Silver for not keeping control. Later, Whisper met with Silver in the Emeraldville Ruins. She told him she saw Duo kicked him. Silver told her he also saw Duo change the color of his eyes. Realizing Duo was Mimic, Whisper put her mask on and said they were going hunting.[47]

Whisper and Silver spied on Duo throughout the next day but didn't catch him breaking his disguise. Silver pointed out he saw his black eyes when he was in danger and suggested spooking him. Whisper told him no, but Silver picked him up over a railing, saying he'd catch him. Lanolin caught Duo before he fell over and called for them to come out from hiding. Lanolin said she saw them watching Duo and asked Silver what he was trying to do. Whisper said they were spying on Duo because he was Mimic in disguise. Lanolin demanded proof, but Whisper said they would later, and she already saw some tells he was. Lanolin defended Duo, saying Whisper was harassing a teammate. Whisper tried to push her aside, not wanting to wait, but Lanolin pushed her to the ground and was disappointed Whisper couldn't control herself. Whisper kept fighting her, not wanting Mimic to hurt her again. During their tussle, Silver seemingly hurt Duo, shocking the crowd including. Jewel and Tangle came to the scene and Whisper told Tangle she was sure he was Mimic. Shaking and visibly in pain, Whisper said Mimic wouldn't react like that this wasn't supposed to happen. Tangle hugged Whisper and said she was here for her. Lanolin proposed for Silver to be kicked out of the Diamond Cutters, and Whisper agreed, not wanting to misguide him again. After Tangle saw how Lanolin and Whisper felt, she voted Silver out too.[48]

Whisper was present when the Diamond Cutters were introduced to Surge and Kit by Sonic and Amy. Unlike her teammates, Whisper outright refused to entertain the notion of the imposters joining the Diamond Cutters. She told Sonic he can trust them, but she cannot and would not trust them. Surge was amused by Whisper's stance and swiped the Variable Wispon from Belle, handing it to Whisper. Surge told her she was the first person with any sense in the Restoration and knew she wanted to take her out right then, which Surge respected. Whisper took her Wispon and Surge told her she might join the group just so the wolf can point her Wispon at her. Whisper reluctantly let Surge have the offer, but she would be watching her.[49]

Endless Summer[]

Sonic, Tangle, Whisper (and her Wisps), and Jewel arrived at a beach near Green Hill, where Tangle and Whisper set up their umbrella and mat and start playing in the water. After some convincing by Sonic, Jewel joined Tangle and Whisper in the water. During a game of volleyball, Jewel had to retrieve their ball after Tangle bounced it too high, but spots the Babylon Rogues on the other side of the beach. After getting spotted by them, Sonic and his friends got into a dispute over who should stay at the beach. Tangle escalated the issue further because of the fact that the Babylon Rogues robbed, kidnapped and chucked Jewel out of their blimp. Wave then decided that a tournament should be held, promising that the winning team gets to stay.

After playing Disc Catch, Sand Sculpting and Surfing, the teams moved onto Volleyball, which was the final round of the game. During the Volleyball game, Jewel started to feel left out as Sonic, Tangle and Whisper played against the Babylon Rogues without giving her involved. During a timeout by Sonic, Jewel devised a plan for her team to win the tied match. The team took advantage of Jet's ego while they kept Storm and Wave away from the net. With the Babylon Rogues completely losing sight of Jewel's presence, she gained the upper hand and slammed the ball out of bounds on the Rogues' side, earning Sonic's team the victory. Jewel, feeling bad about sending the Babylon Rogues off like that, offered them a truce to let them stay with Sonic's team on the beach, which the Rogues reluctantly accepted. Later that day, they had a campfire where Whisper showed how she roasted a marshmallow, to Jet and Sonic's amazement.[50]

Phantom Riders[]

Whisper and the other Diamond Cutters would enter the Clean Sweepstakes race, There would be a bit of chaos on track with Team Sonic. The chaos is ended by Whisper who blasts the three boards with her Cyan Laser to help them. Tangle asks the trio if they are alright. Lanolin cuts in and coldly calls them a hazard to the race, telling them to get off the track, which leads to Tangle becoming aggrieved with her teammate's callousness towards their friends who could have been hurt, but Duo agrees with Lanolin's "harsh" behavior. Lanolin retorts that a pileup was only averted due to Whisper's good aim as the Diamond cutters drive off.[51]

In the second race, the Phantom Rider would cause trouble on the track. The Clean Sweepstakes Security were alerted, and when they showed up they surrounded him. When Lanolin used her wispon, it caused the track to break and racers to fall off, Whisper would use her Variable Wispon and rescue the racers.[52]

In Misty Spire and soon Nite announces to stop the new Phantom Rider at all costs. The new Phantom Rider charges at the racers, knocking one off his board with one hand and catching a ball with the other. He is then surrounded by the Diamond Cutters, only to throw his ball at Lanolin, knocking her off her Heavy Bike, and flee with Tangle and Whisper continuing the chase. Tangle attempts to comfort Whisper over Lanolin's elimination when they are confronted by a silhouette of Surge. She taunts Whisper about the beating she gave her in Central City and the infamy she would get from doing the same to both her and Tangle this time. Enraged, Whisper chases after Surge and attacks her with her Variable Wispon, only for Kit to intercept. Tangle attempts to intervene but is grabbed and thrown into Whisper's Angel • Devil Gear by Kit's hydro-coil tails. The impact causes Whisper to bump into Jet's Type-J, and the Rogues proceed to enter the brawl. Soon it is revealed that Sonic is the Phantom Rider but before Sonic could answer a rock fell separating them. later on, Whisper was sitting in her room until Tangle came over and tells Whisper that she did not tell the others what happened as she could not give up on Sonic and was still unable to believe what she saw. Whisper gives Tangle her mask, explaining that she stopped recording footage after they fought Mimic but started again after Silver was cast out from the Diamond Cutters. Tangle puts on the mask, seeing the footage for herself and the differences between the two Phantom Riders, such as their appearances and the fact that the first Phantom Rider never attacked anyone directly. Realizing there is more to the situation than meets the eye, Tangle tells Whisper that they are going to figure this out together.[53]

Jewel informs Tangle and Whisper about the situation so far and says that they are the only people she can trust for right now until Tangle reveals to Jewel that Sonic is the Phantom Rider and Jewel agrees seeing how he has not been seen since the first race and says that they have to get in contact with Sonic to stand a chance against Clean Sweep, they end the conversation with Tangle hugging Jewel. Soon Nite starts by announcing the final event in Clean Sweepstakes and they save the best for last until Nite says that they have an announcement from Clean Sweep Inc. reading that they are handling the situation and tells the audience not to worry or panic but meanwhile before the Tangle and Whisper quietly discuses about telling Lanolin and Duo but Whisper reassures her that she will handle that. Suddenly the Phantom Rider appears, and the Diamond Cutters surround him with lanolin telling him that he is done and it's enough and Lanolin counties saying that he would not like her kick on her wispon. Sonic disagrees when suddenly the Babylon Rogues surround him when Nite announces a halt in the race, saying that everyone is going after the Phantom Rider with him dogging attacks from Lanolin, Surge and Kit who Surge manages to grab on to his Eggstreme Gear while Whisper uses her Variable Wispon to fire.[54]

Personality[]

Whisper is Tangle in disguise

Whisper amazed about Mimic the Octopus's abilities, from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2024.

In the past, Whisper was pretty exciting and pretty loud, much like Tangle the Lemur, however, she still can be serious, especially during fights.[55]

In the present, Whisper is a rather mysterious individual with a quiet and withdrawn personality. Very soft-spoken, she speaks only when the situation calls for it and, true to her name, in a very low volume, rarely uttering more than a few words at a time. Whisper used to be more outspoken, eloquent and joyful, but due to the trauma that Dr. Eggman and Mimic had caused her by ensuring the demise of her friends, she grew much more silent and reserved.[2][16] Since then, she has been more shy, cautious and distrustful of others, preferring to be out of the spotlight and in hiding. She also values her personal space and limited her interactions with others, fearing that if she made new friends, she could not handle losing them too.[16][23][24] When in social situations, Whisper usually exhibits a rather bashful side of herself.[2]

TanglehugsWhisper

Tangle hugging Whisper, before the latter pushes her back, from Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2019.

While Whisper is cautious and mistrustful of other people, she exhibits a strong bond with her Wisps that is based on trust and friendship, as illustrated by their reception of Sonic persuading her to trust him, and the Wisps' willingness to stand up to Badniks in order to defend her.[2]

During battles or missions, Whisper is very focused and determined, preferring not to let her emotions get the better of herself in order to complete her goals. However, confronting Eggman or someone related to him can make her lose her temper and make her very angry. Her personal weakness in particular is the trauma she endured due to Mimic and Eggman. Combined with her unwillingness to be close to others, she is reluctant to share these memories with others and usually requires additional support in order to open up.[16][24] Despite this, she is a heroic person, ready to save even people she just met, and does not want her friends to feel the pain of losing loved ones like she had.[2][16][23]

Whisper is very much a lone wolf, so to speak. Keeping to herself, she prefers to do her own thing and work on her own rather than cooperating directly with others. This is illustrated by the fact that while she assisted the Resistance during the war, she never actually joined or even revealed herself to them.[2] Despite this, people like Sonic are able to convince her to come out of her shell and collaborate with others, like when she joined the Resistance on a mission to liberate Angel Island, during which she showed high coordination with her teammates and proved quite helpful to them.[2][19] Over time, Whisper has grown more confident with her new friendships, which has caused her to reveal her most emotional side in the worst of situations.[28] Still, she tried to act alone, fearing for the fate of her friends should they get entangled in her affairs.[38] Once she realized people were trying to help her and she was pushing them away, she promised to work on moving on from her past and to become a better friend and teammate.[42]

A particular quirk about Whisper is that her eyes are squinting most of the time. She usually only opens them in moments of anger, distress or intense worry.[2][24]

Powers and abilities[]

Whisper is a capable fighter. During the Eggman War, her skills on the battlefield were enough to turn the tide of any battle.[2]

Whisper is an expert marksman and a master of stealth, able to infiltrate areas undetected and hit distant targets with her Variable Wispon without being detected by friends or foes alike. Her natural aptitudes are further enhanced by her unique equipment. She seems to prefer positioning herself on high perches and snipe enemies from a safe distance, but is able to hold her own in melee combat as well, with or without her Wisps.[2][40] She has also been shown capable of riding an Extreme Gear.[39]

Whisper is also a trained soldier, and thus, has experience fighting in war-like situations.[3]

Equipment and weapons[]

IDW Wispon powers

Whisper using her Variable Wispon, from Sonic the Hedgehog #8.

Whisper's primary tool of choice is the Variable Wispon, a customized Wispon that can utilize the powers of more than just one Wisp, thus giving her more options during battle. However, unlike other Wispons which were designed to clear out crowds of robots, the Variable Wispon is designed for precision shooting.[2] Whisper used to use a Wispon that would accommodate the use of her Orange Wisp's powers as a sniper weapon.[16]

Whisper also wears a mask scope that she uses for targeting. The mask covers her right eye, but enhances her visibility in her left eye. With it, she can make pin-point shots with deadly accuracy.[2] During missions with the Diamond Cutters, it was also networked with other Diamond Cutters masks, and can play back recordings from the perspective of all team members. It also has a built-in translator that lets her understand the Wisps' language.[8][16][17]

Whisper also wears a utility cloak over her shoulders. It stores up to six specialized Wisp canister cartridges within it (three on each side). These canisters hold her Wisp allies. Whenever Whisper needs one of their powers, her Wisps will leave their capsules and enter her Variable Wispon. If one Wisp is already occupying the Variable Wispon and Whisper decides to change weapon functionality, they know to switch places.[2]

As support for her Variable Wispon's Laser Mode, Whisper carries around a number of octahedron-shaped prisms. By shooting one of these prisms with her Variable Wispon's laser, she can change her laser's trajectory. She can also throw a bunch of prisms into midair, thereby allowing her lasers to ricochet between each prism and create an offensive laser grid.[20]

Weaknesses[]

Due to the trauma she had suffered from losing the Diamond Cutters to Dr. Eggman and Mimic the Octopus, Whisper's emotions have a tendency to get the better of her, which almost resulted in her recklessly destroying a computer with important information on it in a blind rage.[2] Another example was when she learned of Tangle's infection from the Metal Virus, which made her upset enough to make a fruitless attempt to run back into a town filled with Zombots that could infect her as well in tears for her friend.[28] Whisper's emotions can also cause her to make irrational decisions, such as attempting to assassinate Dr. Eggman or using her Wisps against a Dynamo Cage-wielding Surge.[29][38] Unless someone keeps Whisper in check, there could be consequences.

Whisper's mask scope and Variable Wispon can be short-circuited via a Zeti's power over electromagnetism, which can leave her unable to do anything so long as they are short-circuited. If she so happens to have her mask on or have one of her Wisps inside her weapon at the time, both of them can end up getting shocked.[37]

Relationships[]

Tangle the Lemur[]

Tangle Returns

Whisper and her Wisps giving Tangle a big hug, from Sonic the Hedgehog #29.

Tangle the Lemur is, by Whisper's own admission, her first real, true friend since she lost the Diamond Cutters.[16][24] The pair first met during the battle for Angel Island, where they successfully joined forces to defeat Neo Metal Sonic and his army.[19][20][21] After the battle, Whisper seemingly opened up to Tangle and allegedly told her a joke, although she still felt a bit uncomfortable around her.[22] Tangle would later invite Whisper to Spiral Hill Village. While Whisper accepted the invitation, she still preferred to keep her distance from Tangle, especially when she tried to hug her. After later helping her save Jewel from the Babylon Rogues, Whisper became convinced of her friendship with Tangle.[23]

While tracking Mimic, Whisper did not want Tangle to get involved and refused her help, arguing that it was too dangerous for her. Additionally, Tangle's antics also irritated and distracted her.[17] When they later nearly got killed by Mimic, Whisper ordered Tangle to leave. However, it was not because of her antics or because she questioned her abilities, but because she was not ready to lose another friend.[24] Ultimately, however, Whisper was persuaded to reveal her past to Tangle.[16][24] She also agreed to accept her help.[16] Together, they managed to defeat Mimic, and Tangle stopped Whisper from making a mistake by killing him.[25] Since then, Whisper and Tangle have become a close-knit duo. Tangle in particular had to calm Whisper down sometimes when she was too nervous. Upon later learning that Tangle became infected with the Metal Virus (something that the lemur knew would hurt her), Whisper became extremely sad. Breaking from her usual withdrawn nature, Whisper became frantic and attempted to rush towards Tangle's location without hesitation despite the risk of coming into contact with the Metal Virus, and began crying excessively to save her friend.[28] While trying to defend Angel Island, Whisper found herself face-to-face with Tangle who was fully converted into a Zombot, and struggled with fighting against her friend, When Tangle was later returned to normal, Whisper quickly began hugging her in happiness.[32] Additionally, Whisper will sometimes wag her tail when Tangle is with her.

After Mimic escaped prison however, Whisper decided to track him down herself, not wanting to endanger her friends. As such, she left Tangle behind in a gloomy mood.[38] She would rejoin the Restoration, however, and was put on the same team with Tangle. When Tangle suggested the team be named Diamond Cutters, Whisper took offense to it. She blocked out Tangle during their mission, but when they were trapped in a parallel world, Whisper confronted Tangle about it. Whisper heard Tangle's apology and realized she was only acting in good faith so they would be closer together. She forgave Tangle and they were on friendly terms again.[42][43]

Although Whisper and Tangle are quite the polar opposites, with Tangle being loud and excitable while Whisper is quiet and reserved, they enjoy each other's company. Whisper enjoys Tangle's kind heart and her eagerness to make new friends. Tangle simply enjoys new friends regardless of their personalities and Whisper is no different. She appreciates Whisper's bravery and her initiative to look out for others. Due to her shy nature, Whisper does not like being put on the spot by Tangle, finding it a bit insensitive on her side.[17] Whisper initially preferred it when Tangle did not invade her personal space with hugging either, but after growing closer together, she has opened up more to the idea and has even been the one to hug her first.[16][23]

Whisper's Wisps[]

BraveWisps

Whisper's Wisps ready to defend her from harm, from Sonic the Hedgehog #8.

Whisper has her own team of Wisp companions, consisting of a Blue, Cyan, Green, Orange and Pink Wisp, whom she uses to power her Variable Wispon. Of these, the Orange Wisp, was her original partner when she was part of the Diamond Cutters, and the rest of them joined her later. Prior to meeting Sonic and the Resistance, these Wisps were Whisper's only companions after the Diamond Cutters' demise. According to Silver, they make "quite a team."[2]

Despite their role as fuel for Whisper's weapon, Whisper's Wisps treat Whisper as a friend and care much for her. In fact, they are so devoted to her that they were willing to defend her on their own without hesitation when she was at the mercy of some Badniks. Whisper likewise seems to trust her Wisps, enough for her to come out of the shadows when they deemed Sonic the Hedgehog a worthy ally. She is also shown caressing them on a few occasions.[2] Whisper's Wisps have also provided her with emotional support in many situations and repeatedly persuaded her to open up to others and stopped her from making irrational decisions. Whisper holds them close like family and will do anything to get them back if they are taken from her.[40][41]

Diamond Cutters[]

Whisper was initially upset when Tangle hastily recycled her old team's name for their new team with Lanolin. She held a grudge against her, but she eventually realized Tangle was trying to remake the bond she had with her old team with her. Whisper reconsidered, deciding to keep the name to continue the legacy of her old team.[42] Whisper showed some doubts about the team when they started their mission; being more focused on doing things by herself. She soon opened up about how her old team operated and started to actively help the team.[42][43]

The Diamond CuttersSmithy the Lion, Slinger the Ocelot, Claire Voyance, Mimic, and herself—were Whisper's original team. The five of them were close friends who worked exceptionally well together as team where everyone knew their role and could rely on their companions. Together, the Diamond Cutters took on the toughest challenges and supported each other to the end, except for Mimic, who never considered them his friends or even companions, but merely means to an end. Eventually, Mimic sold them out to Dr. Eggman, leading Smithy, Slinger, and Claire to their deaths in a trap. It was only because of Claire's orders to stay back that Whisper survived the incident, along with the Wisps of her fallen friends. The betrayal of one of her teammates and the deaths of the others traumatized Whisper, hence why she is so quiet and withdrawn. Likewise, she has vowed never to forget her fallen friends, and so keeps the recordings of their final moments.[16]

Mimic the Octopus[]

Mimic. He was once a fierce and clever warrior. My friend. But greed meant more to him than friends...and we have been hunting each other ever since. And now he's here, disguised, to finish the job. We won't let him.

— Whisper the Wolf, Sonic the Hedgehog #64

Mimic the Octopus is Whisper's mortal enemy. However, they were originally comrades in the Diamond Cutters, with Mimic serving alongside Whisper as the group's infiltrator. Whisper in particular felt that Mimic was devoted their cause and that her friends were safe in his company. Mimic, however, eventually betrayed the Diamond Cutters and led them into an ambush set up by Dr. Eggman, which led to their deaths. With Whisper left as the group's only survivor, Mimic began to hunt Whisper. Whisper in particular kept the last recordings of the Diamond Cutters so that she would never forget or forgive Mimic. When she eventually had Mimic at her mercy, Whisper would have killed him had it not been for Tangle's intervention, who convinced her that a worse fate for Mimic would be imprisonment and knowing that he had lost to Whisper.[16][25]

Whisper sees Mimic as a threat to be reckoned with. Besides being a trained mercenary and killer, he is able to mess with Whisper's head, namely by emotionally blackmailing her by pretending to be the Diamond Cutters with his shapeshifting abilities without feeling regret about their deaths. Furthermore, Mimic tries to convince Whisper that it was her fault that the Diamond Cutters died.[16][25] Whisper, on the other hand, now only wants Mimic imprisoned, and has promised him that each time he gets out of jail, she will bury him even deeper.[25] Whisper also prefers to track Mimic down alone, not wanting to endanger her friends.[38]

Dr. Eggman[]

Whisper - Eggman

Whisper prepares to shoot Dr. Eggman, from Sonic the Hedgehog #25

Whisper developed a personal vendetta against Dr. Eggman after he and Mimic killed the Diamond Cutters.[16] She has hated the doctor with a passion since that incident, and can get very angry when confronted with his technology or things bearing his image.[2] When Eggman later appeared on Angel Island after Tangle fell victim to his Metal Virus, Whisper nearly killed him while he was defenseless before Cream intervened and convinced that they still needed the doctor to stop the plague.[29] Whisper again didn't hesitate to shoot Eggman, with her Wispon being in another plane of reality being the Doctor's saving grace.[44]

During the Eggman War, Whisper became a symbol of hope and a threat to the Eggman Empire, repeatedly tipping the scales of battle in the favor of the Resistance.[2] As such, Eggman recognizes the threat she poses to his plans and is serious in his efforts to eliminate her, as shown by his grisly imprisonment of her when they met in Eggperial City.[16][56] Due to their past, Whisper has vowed to fight until Eggman's threat is over.[16]

Silver the Hedgehog[]

SilverandWhisper

Whisper starting to open up with Silver, from Sonic the Hedgehog #8.

At several points during the Eggman War, Whisper, from afar, saved the life of Silver the Hedgehog and he has been a big fan of her ever since. Their first meeting face-to-face was less than stellar, as Silver, in his eagerness to meet her, unintentionally frightened Whisper, and she retreated into the shadows in order to avoid him, reluctant to reveal herself to him. Thanks to Sonic's convincing, Whisper decided to give Silver a chance by teaming up with him to infiltrate Eggman's base. After Silver later helped save Whisper's life and exhibited a respectful desire to be a part of her team, Whisper bashfully replied with a "maybe", showing that she had begun opening up to Silver.[2] The two once again proved to be dependable allies and a synchronized fighting duo during the Metal Virus plague, where they worked together to defeat Zor of the Deadly Six and retrieve the Chaos Emerald that was in his possession.[31]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

SonicandWhisper

Sonic talking with Whisper, from Sonic the Hedgehog #9.

At first, Whisper was against revealing herself to Sonic the Hedgehog, opting to supporting him from the shadows and hiding in the dark when he first noticed her. From the beginning, Sonic understood and respected Whisper's decision to be alone. Similarly, after seeing how Sonic exhibited an understanding of her needs and how her Wisps openly adored Sonic, Whisper opened up to Sonic by revealing herself to him and telling him her name.[2] Since then, Whisper began to trust Sonic's judgement and follow his instructions. Most noticeably, she trusted Sonic enough to come directly to the Resistance's aid for the first time rather than working from the shadows during the battle for Angel Island.[19] Similarly, Sonic is confident in Whisper's skills and is always grateful for her help.[21] As he is understanding of Whisper's shy side, Sonic tends to give her the personal space she needs when necessary.[22]

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Whisper - Shadow

Whisper glares at Shadow, from Sonic the Hedgehog #9

Whisper feels uncomfortable in Shadow's presence, as Dr. Eggman and Mimic used Shadow Androids to kill the Diamond Cutters. While on route to save Angel Island from Neo Metal Sonic, she was shown eyeing the black hedgehog warily. However, Whisper knows Shadow is not really to blame for the loss of her teammates and does not hold it against him personally.[16][19]

Babylon Rogues[]

Whisper holds a grudge against the Babylon Rogues, as they nearly killed Jewel when they raided Spiral Hill Village.[23] Even after they helped save the world from the Metal Virus, Whisper did not trust them and watched them carefully during their celebration in Spiral Hill Village until she was reassured by Tangle.[34] She holds an especially low opinion of Jet due to his loud mouth and selfish attitude, though she and her Cyan Wisp still helped him when he was captured by a Super Badnik.[39]

Surge the Tenrec[]

No. You can choose to trust her. I don't. I won't.

— Whisper the Wolf, Sonic the Hedgehog #67

Whisper has grown hatred for Surge the Tenrec after she absorbed her Wisps back in Central City.[41] She firmly doesn't like the idea of her being part of the Restoration, even if she needs to keep an eye on her.[49] She would even attack the tenrec for any mention of that incident.[53]

Lanolin the Sheep[]

Lanolin is a recent ally of Whisper's who recruited to her to the new rapid-response team that would later be named the Diamond Cutters once again.[43] Whisper and Lanolin have a very solider-like relationship with one another, usually addressing each other in the form of orders and copies. Whisper seems to appreciate Lanolin's professionalism and seriousness towards missions and ensuring the team's safety. But Whisper and Lanolin's bond goes beyond just working together, as Whisper sees Lanolin as a mutual and friend, especially once Lanolin expresses sympathy over what has happened to Whisper and admits that it's okay if she needs time to heal. Lanolin works especially well with Whisper when storming Eggman's command tower and comforts her when she starts despairing overseeing the Shadow Androids.[44]

Despite this, Whisper and Lanolin's relationship can be tumultuous at times. Whisper initially accepts Lanolin's pitch to allow Duo the Cat onto the Diamond Cutters, but when Silver brings it to her attention that Duo might be Mimic, she and Silver do everything to stop him. When Whisper and Silver take action against Duo, Lanolin expresses her frustration that the two needed to stop pestering him. Whisper doesn't back down, leading the girls to a bit of a scuffle. Lanolin voices her disappointment with Whisper, saying she could understand Silver's behavior, but Whisper is a soldier and needs to control herself.[48] Lanolin, frustrated and annoyed votes to kick Silver out, which Whisper reluctantly agrees.

During the Clean Sweepstakes event, Whisper, Lanolin and Tangle are all referees for the event, tasked for ensuring safety of the competitors and later catching the Phantom Rider. When Whisper and Tangle eventually learn the Phantom rider is Sonic the Hedgehog, they decide to keep it from Lanolin, fearing what she'd do in response.[53]

Trivia[]

  • Whisper was first revealed at the Sonic the Hedgehog's Way Past Cool Panel at San Diego Comic Con on 19 July 2018.[9]
  • Whisper's name is based on her quiet personality and because she usually whispers. It could also be a play on the Wisps, due to her friendship with them and how she obtains a Variable Wispon.
  • Whisper has two recipes in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Cookbook, "Simple Pleasures" and "Colorful Companions".
  • Along with Tangle and Surge, Whisper is one of the first comic-exclusive characters to appear in a Sonic game, with these being Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
    • According to Ian Flynn, this is because Sega owns the characters from the IDW comic series, thus making it possible to use them in games.[57]
  • Kazuyuki Hoshino has stated that he loves both Tangle and Whisper and that he found it fun to team up with the IDW team to help create them.[58]
  • Whisper is the first comic character to have a plush toy made of them.
