Puts the wind up your opponents and steals Rings as it spins.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Whirlwind is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

The Whirlwind takes the form of a tornado, both as an icon and on the tracks.

Overview[]

Whirlwind SFSB profile

Silver using the Whirlwind, from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.

In gameplay, the Whirlwind can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Baby Sonic, Charmy, Espio, Movie Sonic, Movie Super Sonic, Movie Tails, Rouge, Silver (also as Super Silver), Storm, and Wave. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic can also use the Whirlwind if he uses the Steal Item to steal it from the aforementioned users.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Whirlwind by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose the Whirlwind which travels slowly down the lane it was deployed on in front of the user. As this power-up moves forward, the Whirlwind will pass through any obstacle, destroy any Badnik and mow through any rival character until it wears off. Rival characters that make contact with the Whirlwind will be left floating helplessly in the air temporarily while slowing down momentarily and also lose Rings. In addition, these affected characters will have their lost Rings transferred to the user of the Whirlwind. To avoid the Whirlwinds, the playable character has to step out of its lane.

The Whirlwind can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. For each upgrade, the player will get the chance to obtain more Whirlwinds to use in the Projectile Item slot from a single Item Box; at level 6, there is a chance of getting two Whirlwinds, and at level 12, the Whirlwind will increase the damage.

Trivia[]

  • Despite not having an upgrade listed for obtaining 'x3' of the Whirlwind (level 12), it appears the user is able to obtain three Whirlwinds on occasion from item boxes.
