This weight that's moving up and down... maybe I can stop it using a gun.

Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog

The Weight[1] (ウエイト Ueito?), or black slab, is an obstacle that first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2. It is a large slab that falls down on the player when passing under it and causes damage, but can also be used as a platform.

Description

Generally speaking, the Weights are large rectangular blocks, most of which are made of metal while others appear to be made of rock. Their design slightly differs from game to game, but they are usually dark gray in coloration with red outlines.

In gameplay, Weights can be found in various Stages where they float in midair. Weights will fall down to squash the playable characters either automatically between intervals or when a character gets below them. Unlike Crushers though, which cause the player to lose a life when they fall down on the playable characters, the Weights only inflict regular damage. After falling down, the Weights will then rise up into the air again, and try crush the player once more following the aforementioned conditions. However, they also have a beneficial use, as the player can climb on top of Weights and use them as rising and falling platforms.

Weight Adventure 2

The Weight in Sonic Adventure 2.

Weights' first appearance was in Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, where they resemble black blocks with a hook on the top and red outlines on the edges. They can be found in Stages such as Pumpkin Hill and Mission Street.

In this game, Weights can be controlled by Switches to reach otherwise unreachable areas. Using a Switch connected to a Weight is signified by the Weight's red outlines being disabled and the Weight itself rising up into the air. However, this effect is only temporary and will wear off after a short while.

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Weights are still black slabs. However, they have a more detailed design, possessing rounded edges and corners, red outlines at the edges of the bottom and yellow-green lights on the corners. Whenever a Weight is about to come down or rise up, the yellow-green lights on it flashes. They can be found in several Stages, like Power Plant, Bullet Station, Lost Jungle and Hang Castle.

In this game, certain Weights can be destroyed by the player with any playable character. Such weights are recognized by their more prominent purple shade, greater thickness and smaller surface area. If the player get crushed by the Weights, the player will lose the character leading the playable team, though the character can be recovered by destroying the Weight, passing a Checkpoint or performing a Team Blast.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Weights also appear in Shadow the Hedgehog where they are referred to as black slabs. Here, their appearance is closer to the one they had in Sonic Adventure 2, but with only one red outline, no hook and a lighter coloration. In this game, the player can temporarily stop the Weights' movements by shooting them with weapons.

The Spike Trap is variant of the regular Weight. They are very similar, except that have Spikes on their bottom surface. They only appear in Rooftop Run in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. Whenever they are about to fall, the red outlines on them flash.
