Wave Ocean (ウェーブオーシャン Wēbu Ōshan?) is an Action Stage that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog. It is the first stage for Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower; the eighth stage for Shadow the Hedgehog and E-123 Omega; and the third stage for Silver the Hedgehog (although he does not go through this stage himself, Blaze the Cat does instead). It is based off of Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure.
Description[]
Wave Ocean is a tropical beach on the coast of the island nation of Soleanna, situated near the Castle Town and New City. It is well-used by the people of Soleanna, as there are many houses on the water and boats moored to the many docks. Much of this is present in the first section of the stage, with rocky terrain covered in green grass, beaches, and docks making up much of the terrain. Orcas and dolphins are also a common, sight, with the former posing a hazard as they have a tendency to break docks.
The second section of the stage features much of the same scenery, and is situated along an inlet with several long stretches of beach and raised docks.
Story[]
Sonic the Hedgehog[]
After witnessing Princess Elise get kidnapped by Dr. Eggman, Sonic and Tails track him to Wave Ocean, where they give chase to the Egg Carrier. However, they were ultimately unable to reach her in time, and decide to return to Soleanna to investigate her whereabouts further.
Tails later returns to Wave Ocean after witnessing Dr. Eggman threaten to harm Soleanna unless Elise joined him. Tails went there in hopes of finding the Princess and keeping her from putting herself in danger, but was too late reach her. Tails informed Sonic of this, and Sonic headed off to Kingdom Valley to catch up with them.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
After returning from the past, Shadow is informed by Rouge that E-123 Omega is still in pursuit of the present-day Mephiles. Shadow informs her that he has found the means to seal him, and the two of them fly into Wave Ocean, intending to rendezvous with Omega and confront Mephiles.
While there, Omega confronts Mephiles alone, who taunts him that he was created to defeat Shadow. Angered by this, Omega shoots Mephiles until he fades away. Confused, Rouge asks him what just happened, and Omega informs the two of them that he was the one who sealed away Shadow, who is subtly hurt at the revelation. Rouge, angered, says that the whole situation is unfair and that Shadow only ever wants to help people. In response, Omega tells her that whenever something or someone gets too powerful, it will be seen as a threat.
As Shadow starts to walk away from the conversation, Rouge affirms to Shadow that she will always be by his side, no matter what, and asks him to remember that, with Omega silently agreeing. Shadow tells her that he will before the three of them leave Wave Ocean together.
Silver the Hedgehog[]
After being separated from Silver during their initial time travel, Blaze finds herself at Wave Ocean. Worried about Silver, she speeds off to find him, while also pondering the implications that the Iblis Trigger is a blue hedgehog that she knows.
Blaze finds Silver at the New City, sitting on a set of stairs pondering whether what he was doing is right after what Amy said to him before she left. Blaze expresses some concern for him, but reminds him that this might be their only chance to change the future. Spurred on, the two of them decide to break into Eggman's base because that's where Sonic would most likely be next.
Gameplay[]
Sonic[]
Sonic is the first character who is playable in the first stage of the game, where he is seen trying to pursue the Egg Carrier as it flees Soleanna after Eggman captured Princess Elise the Third following his assault during the Festival of the Sun when Sonic intervened to rescue Elise originally. The area is overrun by Dr. Eggman's "mechs." Sonic runs through the first leg of the stage on foot. However, at one point, he runs from an orca (similar to the orca chase scene at Emerald Coast in Sonic Adventure) and latches onto its fin, hanging on for dear life as it jumps in and out of the water. The next leg of the stage has the player using Tails to flip a switch and close the gate so that the orca does not escape into open water. The orca then sends Sonic flying over the gate and he lands onto the next beach and into his first mach-speed zone. Here, he runs at an incredibly fast pace and manages to catch up to the Egg Carrier at a quick to close range. Eventually, the stage ends with Sonic jumping by on large rocks to reach the beach and the Goal Ring.
Tails[]
Tails is used in the second leg of Sonic's first stage. He is considerably slower than Sonic and only moves faster when he flies. He has the ability to drop and throw Dummy Ring Bombs at his enemies as he goes through the stage. His section ends when he reaches the switch and closes the gate.
Tails also gets his own extra stage in Wave Ocean at a later part of Sonic's story, following Elise's trail, which is not as long as the first stage. Tails goes from the beginning of Sonic's first portion of the stage all the way to the Goal Ring, which is located in the same place the switch for the gate was in Sonic's version of the stage.
Shadow[]
In Shadow's story in Sonic the Hedgehog, he goes to Wave Ocean looking for E-123 Omega and Mephiles the Dark. Shadow's stage starts off with him flying through the area on a glider and shooting down numerous Iblis and Mephiles spawn as he goes by. Eventually, the glider takes him to another part of the stage where the player uses Omega before playing as Shadow again in the third and final leg of the stage. In the final leg, Shadow runs through the level on foot and has the ability to use the homing attack on the creatures he comes across. He is also given the option to drive through a section of the area on a large G.U.N buggy. Near the end of the stage, Shadow must ride across the water in a Hover Craft in order to reach the end of his stage.
Omega[]
E-123 Omega is used through the second leg of Shadow's Wave Ocean stage. He goes through and fights off numerous Iblis and Mephiles spawn creatures with his blasters. He can charge up his arm blasters and fire multiple shots at more than one enemy. He can also jump and hover in the air for a short period of time. Once in the air, he is capable of launching blasts downward at the enemies in front of him in order to destroy them. His leg ends when he hears Mephiles' voice by a closed gate in the level. He can explore more of Wave Ocean by using his hovering glitch from a high part of the level. This can be used for him to fight Shadow's enemies and can even result in him reaching the Goal Ring.
Blaze[]
Silver the Hedgehog does not travel through Wave Ocean, but Blaze the Cat does. Blaze goes through the stage on a mission to locate Silver after being separated from him during the trip to the past from their future by Mephiles to stop the Iblis Trigger. She fights off Eggman's robots by using her spinning homing attacks and her flame powers. She is able to create mini fire tornadoes that destroy enemies when she passes through them. After this stage Blaze then heads to Soleanna Castle Town. This stage is considerably shorter than any other stage in Silver's story.
Rouge[]
Rouge comes here to find the purple Emerald in the End of the World stage.
Silver Medal locations[]
Sonic[]
- During the second time the player finds themselves sliding on the water toward another loop, they must veer to the left to pick up the Silver Medal.
- Before grinding off of the lighthouse, the player must jump from the rail to the lighthouse balcony. Walk around to the opposite side of the balcony. There is a hidden medal tucked in the shade.
- After the lighthouse, the player must keep grinding the rail to the end and go the route. When sliding on water through the tunnel it is to the left.
- After the "tiki hut" section just after completing tunnel leads to the previous Silver Medal, the player must use the Light Speed Dash at the end of the section to get up through the Rainbow Ring, then walk on the wall which leads to the fourth Silver Medal.
- In Tails' section, when the player flies to the island at the beginning, there is a Silver Medal hanging just on the other side of the rock arch, to the left of the Dash Ring. They must jump off the boxes on the rocks and fly through the air to collect the medal.
- The player should start off the Super Speed Section by heading to the far left to find a semi-hidden ramp under an arched rock formation. The Silver Medal is in the area this ramp leads to on the main path, and the player must use the Light Speed Dash on the nearby Rings to help line the way up.
- In the forested area on the left side.
- In the same section of the seventh medal, the eighth one is placed in the center of the pier.
- After the boardwalk, the ninth medal can be seen floating above the boardwalk requiring a single jump to gather it.
- In the final section, the player should not go into the cave directly behind the robots. Instead, they must head along the right side of the island. The final medal in this stage is beneath the second pier on the beach, but the view of it is blocked by a small pile of rocks until the player passes under the first pier.
Shadow[]
- It is seen hovering above the beach on the player's way on the Glider.
- When the player reaches the cave while he is gliding, the Silver medal is inside.
- As the player picks up the second medal and flies out of the cave back into the open, they must continue shooting down monsters from the air and scoop up the Silver Medal placed on the right side of the rock columns that line their final approach to the beach.
- In the second section, the player must look for the fourth Silver Medal tucked behind the rocks along the beach, near the unlocked Spring.
- Before the player jumps on the spring just beyond the first point marker, they should look down to the left of the pier. The fifth Silver Medal is hidden between the rocks.
- After the player passes through the second point marker, they must drop down to the beach, and then can turn around to spot the Silver Medal beneath the boards.
- Before arriving at the gate and switching to Shadow in the final of E-123 Omega's section, the player must destroy all of the monsters on the grassy part of the atoll to make the Silver Medal appear on the grassy area to the right of the small high cave.
- In Shadow's section, the eighth Silver Medal is on the grassy plateau in the middle of the beach. It is too high for the player to jump to it directly, so they must use Homing Attacks on the Iblis Takers to get additional height. The medal is in the center of the plateau.
- On the second beach section near the end of the stage before the hovercraft section, the Silver Medal is behind a pile of rocks.
- It is located in the same section as the ninth one, in a pile of rocks near the lighthouse.
Blaze[]
- On the first beach, the player must look for the Silver medal under crates on the left side of the beach. It is exposed when they destroy the robot on the stack.
- On the second beach, the Silver medal is on top of the rocks on the right side of the beach.
- Before jumping on the lighthouse ending the second beach section, the player must grab the Silver Medal hidden behind it.
- When the player is on the rail leading off the lighthouse, they must jump off to the island below the Rainbow Ring. It is in a pile of rocks.
- From the fourth medal section, the player must use the Accelerator Tornado to reach the Rainbow Ring above. The Silver Medal is on the rail the player lands on.
- Once the player has grabbed the fifth medal, instead of falling down off the rail, the player must jump off it to land on top of the cottage, then turn to the right to see it floating above a smaller tiki.
- The player should not grab the Rainbow Ring above the third checkpoint, and instead drop down to the beach below, taking that path. After the Egg Cannon, they must turn to the right to see the Silver Medal off to the side.
- Before heading off into the ocean (the end of the section), the player must get the first one by crushing the giant stack of crates near the spiked bars.
- For the ninth medal, the player must head for the beach (in the same section) that is below the spiked bars. Instead of stepping on the Spring, they can drop down to the sand and turn back to see the medal next to a set of Springs.
- The tenth one is seen floating above the beginning of a boardwalk after the whale chase.
Tails[]
- On the area with Egg Bombers, the first Silver Medal rests behind the rocks at the water’s edge.
- Before the player bounces up to the top of the lighthouse, they must pick up the Medal underneath the pier.
- After the first point marker at the end of the rail, the player must jump up and hover over to the Silver medal before flying to the small stretch of pier to the left.
- After the Dash Panels drop the player into another pier, there will be a spiked bar on the way. Beyond it is the Silver Medal perched at the very tip of a tiki hut roof.
- After the second point marker, there is a large rock along the beach near the grassy area. The player must look inside a small hole in the rock to find the fifth medal.
- Ahead of the fifth medal when the player jumps through the middle of the spiky bar, they should drop down instead of flying to find the sixth Silver Medal.
- It is seen at the end of the whale boardwalk part floating in the air.
- After the third point marker, the player must turn to the left, and can find the eighth medal floating beneath a rock arch.
- It is behind the lighthouse on the beach with the Goal Ring.
- The tenth medal is in the pile of rocks on the platform before the Goal Ring.
Trivia[]
- In Sonic's version of the stage, the portion where he runs away from the orca is a reference to the iconic "orca chase" section of Emerald Coast in Sonic Adventure.
- In both Sonic and Tails' run-through of this stage, their objectives are the same: to rescue the Princess trapped inside Eggman's Egg Carrier. In the end, neither were able to do so.
- As mentioned above, this is the only stage in the game that Silver does not play through.
- However, Silver's partner, Blaze, goes through the stage instead.
- In Sonic's story, the player is able to skip over Tails' part of Wave Ocean and finish the level without him by using the Purple Gem.
- In Sonic's story, it is the only level which the player has to beat twice (The first is with Sonic and Tails when they chase the Egg Carrier, the second is with just Tails when who try to find Sonic).
- In Sonic's story, the player as Tails can move on to the next section by flying straight to the gate without closing it with the switch.
- The music for this stage is unlockable in Sonic Generations.
- In Shadow's story, it is possible to skip Shadow's part and finish the stage as E-123 Omega. In order to do so, the player has to reach the end of Omega's section and Hover intermittently around the locked gate to reach the other side of it where the Goal Ring is.
- There's a slight blooper in Shadow's version of the stage (or, rather, the leadup to it). The GUN official when telling Shadow to head to the location ends up saying "Head to the Wave Ocean", with someone off-screen (presumably the script writer) hushedly correcting the GUN official's voice actor, and then the GUN official repeating the line correctly (the latter two instances are not subtitled).
- The level takes place on a beach near Soleanna New City, this is because of the colorful sailboats in the background, the same ones that are on the Soleanna pier.
- In Shadow's story, there is a slight error with the Hover Craft. Once the player gets on the Hover Craft, they unfortunately cannot get off of it and has to remain in there while driving it.
- A remixed version of "Wave Ocean ~The Inlet~" was released on the album Sonic the Hedgehog DJ Style Party.
- This stage is played before Dusty Desert in all stories.
- The large trees that can damage Sonic in his second act are specifically cycads.
- Both of wave oceans level themes are in G sharp/A flat
