— Wade Whipple, Sonic the Hedgehog

Wade Whipple is a character in Sonic the Hedgehog film. He is fellow police officer of Green Hills and a friend of Tom Wachowski.

History

Wade is shown to be the Deputy Sheriff of Green Hills under Sheriff Tom Wachowski, but due to his position, seems inept at performing his duties without consulting with Tom first for advice.

When Tom is working speed trap detail on the outskirts of town, Wade soon calls in requesting his help back in Green Hills with some ducks that stole a doughnut or bagel, and Tom wisely decides to return to see what all the hullabaloo is about. Later that night, after Sonic inadvertently throws Green Hills into a blackout from generating an EMP in his sadness, frustration, and anger, Wade calls Tom in a panic at what he should do since he's unable to solve the problem himself, forcing a bemused Tom to calm him down, give him instructions, and try to tell him to handle things from the station while Tom handles things from home, due to having recently learned that he was accepted to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and Maddie had already left for San Francisco to visit family and find a new place for her and Tom to live at once they move there.

After being forced to flee Green Hills after meeting Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, Tom calls Wade from a pay phone outside a biker bar to see how things are going back in town, only for Wade to reveal that Robotnik and his agents are in the station with him, supervising Wade's call, before Robotnik takes over from Wade and warns Tom that his actions in interfering in Robotnik's investigation into Sonic would force him to label Tom a domestic terrorist, but is sharply cut off when Tom hangs up on him. With little other option at that point, Robotnik leaves with his agents, as Wade shouts after them that he'll remember this since they did not wipe his memory a la the Men In Black.

Wade is not seen again until the end of the movie when Tom and Maddie arrive in downtown Green Hills to find Sonic severely wounded from Robotnik piloting the Prototype and Tom desperately tries to fight Robotnik himself before being flung off the Prototype and Robotnik prepares to kill him and Maddie. Incensed by the threat to his superior officer's life, Wade gains enough confidence to draw his service pistol and fire a warning shot at Robotnik, warning him that he's messing with Green Hills' sheriff, before being joined by a chainsaw-wielding Crazy Carl. When Sonic gains his second wind and prepares to face off with Robotnik, Wade wisely takes cover with Tom, Maddie, Carl, and the other residents to watch as Sonic is able to severely cripple the Prototype, before banishing Robotnik to the Mushroom Planet, destroying the Prototype in the process. Wade cheers for Sonic afterwards, and as everyone heads home, Wade confiscates Carl's chainsaw before sending him on his way, knowing it's too dangerous for Carl to hold onto.

Wade is presumably relived later when Tom decides to remain in Green Hills and continue serving as Sheriff and Wade's superior instead of moving to San Francisco to join the SFPD.
