The Voxai are an alien species seen in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Like the Nocturnus echidnas, the Voxai are trapped within the Twilight Cage; all that's known about the length of their imprisonment is that they arrived after the Kron[1] and before the Nocturnus.

General

The Voxai resemble, in Rouge's words, "manta... jellyfish... thing[s]." Two sets of flipper-like wings extend from a translucent central body mass, with a tapering triangular tail bringing up the rear. Although they lack faces, individual Voxai can be distinguished by the patterning on their front sections. Regular Voxai citizens generally display reddish colouration, from light pink to crimson to deep purple, although the Overmind Voxai display more vaired colours (and are considerably larger).

The Sonic Chronicles Codex tells us:

"The Voxai are a race of strange, psychic beings native to the Kron Colony(?).[2] As a race, they are quiet and hardworking, but their psychic powers make even the Nocturnus Clan fear to tread on their land.[3]
The Voxai are all connected, in a way, by a psychic signal that originates from the Voxai Overmind, three[4] very powerful Voxai who act as one in directing the daily operations of individual Voxai. Most of the time, the Overmind simply suggests to the citizens what they should be doing, offering gentle encouragement to the individual. Should the Overmind flex their power, though, not even the Nocturnus are immune to their mind-controlling abilities. Because of this, crime on the Voxai Colony is nonexistant, and will be as long as the Overmind remains in control."

The Voxai seem to be a reasonably insular race, lacking the militaristic ambitions of the Nocturnus or the Zoah. They refer to visitors (and dissidents) as outerminds, distinguishing them from the innerminds who are connected to the Overmind's psychic signal.

The Voxai are also the only race in the Cage to occupy two planetoids; both in Sector Charybdis. Sonic first visits Colony Beta, a rocky worldlet of grey stone and glowing pink/blue scenery, filled with flask-shaped Voxai homes. This is linked to the Colony Alpha by a teleport gate. Alpha serves as the lair of the Overmind.

Spoiler warning: Plot, ending details or any kind of information follow.

Shortly after Imperator Ix of the Nocturnus stole the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic's world, he gifted two of the gems to the Overmind. Despite the fact that the Overmind already exerted at least passive psychic control over all Voxai society, it seems the chance for ultimate power was too tempting for the triumvirate to resist. Thexle boasts (and Thebes confirms) that the Overmind "psychicly treated" the two Chaos Emeralds. Whatever this strange process involved, it turns the Emeralds pink; in this state, the Voxai refer to the jewels instead as "Great Emeralds".

Thus modified, the Emeralds served to massively boost the force of the Overmind's signal, enabling direct and continuous psychic domination of every innermind in Sector Charybdis. Dominated Voxai citizens changed colour to a deeper red, and would attack Sonic and team on sight. Voxai society was changed overnight, a vaguely utopian psychic collective becoming a thought-patrolled police state.

Some Voxai, however, were able to resist (or at least, fly under the radar). By quietly becoming outerminds, these free Voxai retained their individuality. One such citizen was Thebes, who enlisted Sonic's help in defeating the despotic Overmind. After an unsuccessful attack from Thelxe, one of the Overmind's elite protectors, Sonic and company were able to confront the Overmind in Colony Alpha, and defeat it.

Thebes proceeded to take up the mantle of the Overmind single-handedly, giving up the power of the Great Emeralds and promising to return Voxai society to its previous form of benign collectivism. Thebes also agreed to take part in the Twilight Conference, a meeting with the other races' leaders to figure out the best plan of attack against Ix. During the assault on the Nocturne, the Voxai contribiuted by psychicly scanning the repulsor shield to find a weak spot for the Zoah's missile.

Members

Overmind

The Overmind is the controlling intellegence of the Voxai; the leader which sends telepathic messages to the citizenry and instructs them on what to do each day. The Overmind was made up of three powerful Voxai: Leucosia (green), Ligaia (orange), and Riadne (blue). They appear to have merged their minds together, functioning as a single entity (as they are repeatedly seen to finish each others' sentences). Unlike the other tribe leaders in the Twilight Cage, the Overmind is genuinely loyal to Imperator Ix, willingly allying Sector Charybdis with the Nocturnus.

The Overmind's combined psychic powers are sufficient to take direct mental control of individual Voxai (or even Nocturnus), should they see fit. When Sonic and his friends conftonted the Overmind in Colony Alpha, the powerful Voxai attempted to control their minds: to "free them the burden of choice". Protected by the psychic barrier of a Voxai-treated "Great Emerald", Sonic resisted. Overconfident, the Overmind freed Sonic's friends for the duration of the battle, but this ultimatly lead to thier destruction; Leucosia, Ligaia, and Riadne were defeated.

What remained of the Overmind's power was taken up by Thebes, who became the new Overmind.

Thebes

Thebes was a local resident of Voxai Colony Beta when the Overmind started to enslave their society. Thebes was one of the few who was strong (or lucky) enough to resist, and decided to go into hiding as an outermind. He was able to enlist the aid of Sonic's group to help him fight back against the Overmind. Following the defeat of Leucosia, Ligaia, and Riadne, Thebes became the new Overmind. In his last appearence he took part in the Twilight Conference and was breiflly picked on by the Zoah general Raxos, who chided Thebes for his inexperience as a ruler.

Thelxe

Thelxe was one of the "Overmind's elite protectors", and probably one of the few who willingly supported their despotic ambitions. He confronted Thebes at the entrance to Colony Alpha's teleport gate. After being knocked out by Sonic's group, Thebes extracted the teleport code from Thelxe's mind and imprinted it on Sonic's. Thebes stayed behind on Colony Beta, to "keep his mind on" Thelxe.

Croesus

Is a resident of Colony Beta during the Overmind's tyranny, Croseus and his familly became unwitting outerminds, thanks to a clandestine Nocturnus operation, using a machine that blocks the Overmind's telepathic signal. Being cut off from the other Voxai was driving Croesus mad; but when the machine was shut down by Tails, he was able to hear again.

Trivia

  • The Voxai design may have been enspired from the legendary Pokemon Kyogre since they have a similar body structure.
  • When first confronting the Overmind, Sonic isn't effected and if the player has Cream the Rabbit, Big the Cat or E-123 Omega on their team they won't be effected either. Any other party member will be affected, uttering a brainwashed line. Shade speaks her brainwashed line whether she is in the party or not.

Notes

  1. The Codex entry for the Kron states "The Kron are believed to be the oldest race still living in the Twilight Cage".
  2. This is probably a mistake in the Codex, as this mysterious point about the Voxai originating from the same world as the Kron is never mentoned anywhere else, and seems fairly ridiculous when you consider their vastly different societies, appearences, environments, etcetera.
  3. This point is backed up by Shade, who makes frequent assertions to the effect that even powerful, strong-willed Nocturnus have fallen under the control of the Overmind while on missions to Voxai territory, never to be seen again.
  4. Although the Overmind includes three (giant) members during the events of Chapter 9, after their defeat Thebes single-handedly takes over what is left of the Overmind's collective power. It can therefore be speculated that the triumvirate Overmind is more a feature of Voxai historical precedent than actual necessity.
