Volcanic Tunnel (パドントンネル[1] Padonton'neru?, lit. "Padon Tunnel") is the second level in Tails Adventure. However, due to the non-linear nature of Tails Adventure, the young fox must return to the region on various occasions as new items (specifically, the Large Bomb) open up new routes.

Description[]

As the name suggests, Volcanic Tunnel takes place in a subterranean tunnel formed mostly out of green bricks, with small torches dotting the walls. Lava is also abundant in this level, pouring in from several holes seen in the background. Although no Kukkus physically appear in Volcanic tunnel, their Nezu and Bat Robots are present, and can be found guarding certain sections.

Gameplay[]

Overview[]

Volcanic Tunnel is divided into three segments, the third of which can only be accessed by using the Large Bomb. As such, it features two exits to the world map, one at the end of the second segment, and one at the end of the third.

  • The first segment begins with a small barrier formed out of stone barriers, which the player must destroy to progress. The level then splits into two paths, one which leads past a hallway full of Nezus to a dead-end containing the Hammer item, while the other leads down a pit to several platforms floating over lava, which the player must continue on to progress the location. The player is then faced with a bridge next to another lava pit, which spews fireballs at them as they try to cross it. Following a short climb, the player is faced with a maze that can only be entered using the Remote Robot, with the Remote Bomb located at the center of the maze. The player then has to use the Remote Bomb to destroy a barrier and progress to the end of the segment.
  • The second segment begins with several downwards steps, before opening out into a lava pit with an entrance to the third segment blocked by a barrier that can only be destroyed using the Large Bomb. Continuing on, the player is needed to use the Remote Bomb again to progress, leading them to several more stone barriers and a crumbling bridge with the Green Chaos Emerald located at its end. The player then once again has to use the Remote Bomb to destroy a barrier blocking the level's first exit.
  • Unlike the other two, the third segment is mostly vertical, with the player descending deeper underground as they explore it. After several lava pits and a downwards shaft, the path splits into two smaller routes that both lead into the boss chamber, the longer and more dangerous of which allows the player to safely attack the Mecha Golem through a hole in the wall with no danger. After defeating the Mecha Golem, the second exit will open up, signaling the end of the location.

Boss[]

Main article: Mecha Golem

The Mecha Golem is fought at the end of the third segment of Volcanic Tunnel. Unlike the Mecha Golem (5-gou) found in Cavern Island, this incomplete model is completely stationary and can be stood on by the player without taking immediate damage. Its attack pattern consists mainly of bullets, which it rapidly fires from its two machine guns. It can also fire bullets from its back, should the player lie within range.
