This guy's Violet Void power kind of floats you around... And pulls other stuff in towards him.

Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic Colors (Nintendo DS)

The Violet Void (バイオレット・ヴォイド Baioretto vu~oido?) is a transformation for potentially multiple users which appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Color Power gained by absorbing a Violet Wisp and its Hyper-go-on, which turns the user into a ghost-like void.

Appearance

When using the Violet Void, the user turns into a large, ghastly and smoky black orb with violet outlines. In Sonic's case, his version of the Violet Void has his eyes and mouth on the front, though his eyes have lost their pupils and have turned yellow, and his mouth has become a wide sinister smile with serrated teeth that glows yellow.

The Violet Void made its first appearance in the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors. In this game, the Violet Void is the last Color Power introduced in the game, and is unlocked in Asteroid Coaster. In gameplay, while transformed into the Violet Void, the player can both fly in midair and draw in and consume both enemies and obstacles from a distance or upon touch. For every unspecified set of targets consumed, the Violet Void will grow one size, until it has had a total of two growth spurts. The bigger the Violet Void gets, the larger the player's intake radius will be, and the faster they can move. The Violet Void can likewise draw in Rings and Wisp Capsules from a distance. Certain obstacles of greater size and/or weight requires that the Violet Void has reached a certain size before it can draw them in though. While transformed into the Violet Void, the player is also invulnerable to damage, However, the player can still be affected by bottomless pits.

As the Violet Void, the player can take alternate paths and shortcuts by passing through rotating fans that would otherwise block the player. Passing through these fans will briefly turn the Violet Void into smoke and give a forward boost of speed. These fans can likewise be used to direct the player down a certain path in midair by sending the player down a chain of fans. There are also block-shaped gimmick in the Acts that can provide the player with additional matter for the purpose of increasing the Violet Void's size.

To use the Violet Void in gameplay, the player must possess a Violet Wisp. Once transformed into the Violet Void, the player's Boost Gauge starts to deplete, and once it runs out, Sonic will revert back to normal. To extend its duration, the player has to collect more Violet Wisps. In gameplay, the Violet Void is activated by pressing Snnwiidsxbuttondisco. Once transformed, the player can move freely in every direction using Controlpadds.

Team Sonic Racing

In Team Sonic Racing, the Violet Void makes an appearance as a product of the Violet Wisp power-ups that can be obtained on the race tracks.

To use the Violet Void in gameplay, the player has to press Cross/A button/Switch b while in possession of a Violet Wisp.

Powers and abilities

As the Violet Void, the user essentially becomes a living black hole which can draw objects into themselves from a distance and make them vanish into a void within them. However, the user cannot drawn in objects that are too big or heavy.

Because of the Violet Void smoke-like makeup, the user is granted limited intangibility, allowing them to pass through certain obstacles, such as moving fans, unharmed. As the Violet Void, the user is also capable of flight through mid-air.

Like the Purple Frenzy, the Violet Void can add the mass of the objects they draw into them, allowing the user to grow larger the more they consume until they reach maximum size. Also, the more the Violet Void increases in size, the stronger its suction ability becomes, enabling the user to draw in bigger and heavier objects from greater distances. At maximum size, the Violet Void can draw in objects weighting at least a ton and enemies at the size of the Frigate Skullian.

The main weakness of the Violet Void is that it can only be used for a few seconds and requires more Hyper-go-on from Violet Wisps to be maintained.

Trivia

  • The Violet Void can be used to slowly eat away at the Frigate Skullian. If its health is depleted while in Void form, it will be sucked in.
  • The Violet Void and the Yellow Drill are the only Color Powers that have multiple jingles. The Yellow Drill's jingles are heard in Sweet Mountain and Aquarium Park, and the Violet Void's jingles are heard during Act 1, Act 2, and the missions of Sweet Mountain and Asteroid Coaster, and during the boss fight against Frigate Skullian.
    • However, this is the only color power to have different jingles in the Nintendo DS version since the Yellow Drill jingles are the same in that version.
      • The Violet Void's jingles are actually slower distortions of the background music.
  • In the opening, the Violet Void is shown to have rather white eyes and mouth whilst, in the levels, it is shown to have a yellow mouth and yellow eyes instead.
