The Vault Key[2] (エメラルドキー[3],Emerarudo Kī?, lit. "Emerald Key"), also known as the Chaos Emerald Vault Key[2], is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of key from the Starfall Islands which are needed certain amount to obtain each Chaos Emerald from a Vault.
Vault Keys are depicted as classic skeleton keys. They each possess a long and thin shaft, a hollowed out head that looks like the outline of a Chaos Emerald, and an intricate set of teeth on the other end of their shafts. In-game model of the Vault Key is also depicted having different colored glowing aura and digital stardust trail on it in each one of Starfall Islands: cyan on Kronos Island and Ouranos Island, yellow on Ares Island, red on Chaos Island.
Features and abilities[]
Vault Keys are capable of floating in midair under their own power, and are able to unseal the Chaos Emerald Vaults around the Starfall Islands.
Overview[]
In Sonic Frontiers, the Vault Keys are tied to the progression of the game. In gameplay, the player will earn Vault Keys by completing missions in each Cyber Spacestage, which are set around the Starfall Islands. Each stage has four missions and the player will receive that number of Vault Keys based on how many missions have been fulfilled after clearing the Cyber Space stage.[4] When the player successfully clears all four missions in the Cyber Space stage, the player is also rewarded with three additional Vault Keys.[5] The Vault Key appears to be obtained after Sonic returns to the Open Zone area. Outside the Cyber Space, the player can also buy extra Vault Keys with Treasure Tokens or Gold Cards by successfully clearing the Fishing Spot minigame hosted by Big the Cat. Each Vault Key is worth of fifteen Treasure Tokens, when the player chooses it in the "Trade Tokens" store. During the Open Zone gameplay, it is also possible to find Vault Keys in unexpected places by using Cyloop in marked spots with treasure box icons on them in each one of Starfall Islands.
The amount of obtained Vault Keys can be seen on the HUD in top left corner and the number required to open each Chaos Emerald Vault is shown on the Map screen.[2] When the player has required amount of Vault Keys, one of the Vaults in the Open Zone area will be unsealed and the player can gain access to it via the new route it creates.[1] Each time the player reaches a Vault, Sonic will then deliver its key, which makes the Vault Key evaporate into a digital form and become part of the Vault itself,[6] while Sonic receives a Chaos Emerald and the player can progress further in the game.
If the player pre-ordered Digital Deluxe Edition of the game with The Explorer's Treasure Box bonus, Sonic would automatically have ten Vault Keys at the start of the game.[7]
