OK, given the topic of what/how the Freedom Fighters can be reintroduced in IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic has been a reoccurring subject. The way I see it, I believe Sega would have retired the freedom Fighters long before Archie comics end but I believe they allowed Archie comics to continue use of the SatAM characters out of polite obligation or something. Now that Archie Sonic comic has ended means they could finally retire the characters and move on with new characters that they'll probably wish to retire but can't in a few decades time. On the other hand the comics barely passed the half-hundred mark so it's still somewhat early days for the comic. The Resistance is now the Restoration but Dr. Eggman is still a threat in Sonic's world and we still have yet covered the full history of the Eggman War outside the events of Sonic Forces, so there is still room for stories and inclusions.
Here's how I imagine how the Freedom Fighters can be introduced.
The Resistance[]
Adapted from the Resistance from Sonic Forces, The Resistance consist of many mobians across the islands to fight in the Eggman War. So it could be possible known groups of Resistance members were more organized as teams than others. The Diamond Cutters being an example (though they have been an anti-Eggman mercenary group before the war, they simply took sides with the Resistance. The Freedom Fighters could simply be another group in service of the Resistance.
Sally "Princess" Acorn[]
Sally is no longer royalty. There is no Kingdom of Acorn. And while the House of Acorn is still a thing it is not at all royalty. Instead the House of acorn is an aristocratic family (as in they are wealthy and have some political sway due to nobility but not at all royalty). Her parents want her to be a prim and proper lady but she is simply too high spirited for that. When the War began she believed it was an important duty to take part in the Resistance but her parents forbade it. Having enough of the rich lifestyle choking her freedom of spirit she decides to abandon her riches and run away from home to join the Resistance. The only items of value that she brought from her is the locket her mother gave her and an advance hi-tech PDA that her father gave her. The AI in the PDA was equipped with an advance AI named Nicole who helps Sally with information and computer-related hacking.
When she first joined the Resistance, other members thought she would be too posh and snobbish to fight for the Resistance, some calling her "princesses" over it. However she quickly excelled in skills and physique to be an accomplished Resistance member. Taking the callsign "Princess", she is the leader of Team Freedom, leading the speed formation.
Bunnie "Rabbot" Rabbot[]
Born and raised a country girl from either Mirage Saloon Zone or Rocky Ridge, a large Badnik raid burned crops and raised barns and buildings. Bunnie was caught in the raid. When she was found she was badly wounded and barely alive. When she came to she found both her legs and her left arm amputated and fitted with prosthetics. Distraught, upset and spurned for revenge she was quick to join the Resistance but was turned down because she was regarded disabled to join. Sally Acorn however vouched for her and introduced her to mechanic and engineer Rotor who replaced her prosthetics with cybernetic limbs equipped with powerful jets and blaster. Because of this she can now join the Resistance. Since others have called her "Rab-bot" due to being cyborg, she takes the callsign "Rabbot" and serve as air support for the Fly-formation of Team Freedom.
Rotor "Boomer" the Walrus[]
Somewhere in the Resistance base, Rotor has converted a spare room into a private workshop for himself. He believes if he studies the badniks and war-machines of the Eggman Empire he can better understand how they work and make better equipment and weapons for the Resistance. Because of this the occasional explosions can be heard from Rotor's nook which lead to his nickname "the Boomer" due to everyone use to the sounds of explosions echoing throughout the base. Other Resistance members have always found him an odd one and usually ignore him, except for Sally Acorn who recognize his skill as a mechanic, technician and engineer and gives him the respect her deserves from it. He even helped Bunnie Rabbot by replacing her prosthetics with new cybernetics, restoring her confidence in herself. Sally also helped Rotor recognize his own inner-strength. Rotor's large physique and girth grants him a strength that when properly honed in makes him a power-house fighter that even he was unaware of. Because of this he provides the muscle and machines for the power-formation of Team Freedom
Antoine D'Coolette[]
A former military cadet, Antoine was hired by Sally's father to be her daughters personal bodyguard. While it's somewhat unprofessional of him to be a bit smitten over her his ward he still takes his duty of protecting her and keeping her in line very seriously. A duty he pretty much failed to do when he caught her running away from her and failed to stop her. Still honour bound by his duty, if he cannot bring her home he will go with her in order to protect her the best he could. He trains her in combat though given Sally's natural skills it did not take her long to surpass Antoine to the point that at times she was his protector. While he may not excel in Speed or Power he is still regarded as a member of Team Freedom, even gaining the fancy of Bunnie Rabbot which he feels just as well.
