An untitled sequel to Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, intended to be developed by BioWare, was in the plans after the release of the first game. A rough plot for the game was written, but the sequel was ultimately scrapped, possibly due to legal issues inadvertently caused by concepts used in the first game.[1]

The game's plot would remain unknown to the public until July 2023, when lead designer Miles Homes revealed it during an interview regarding the game's development.[1]

Plot[]

Following the conclusion of the first game, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Big, Cream, Shadow, Omega, and Shade would return from the Twilight Cage to find several years had passed due to time dilation, and in that time, Eggman took over the Earth with nobody to oppose him, remaking it in his own image, and imprisoning and enslaving much of the population under his dystopian rule. Eggman would also have modified several famous landmarks (such as the Eiffel Tower) to fit his signature egotistical style. With the Blue Cyclone being shot down, Sonic and co. would be thrown from the craft in separate groups, which would split up to liberate different parts of the planet, while remaining constantly on the run from Eggman's forces.[1]

Sonic and co. would eventually begin freeing entire populations from Eggman's captivity, with the intention of building up a multi-national army to storm his base and liberate the planet. However, this plan would be discarded after the sudden arrival of the cosmic god Argus, promoting Sonic and Eggman to join forces in order to fight the common enemy. Eggman would use a powerful laser to fire Super Sonic like a bullet, weakening Argus' defenses, and throwing open the Twilight Cage to release all those trapped inside, who would band together against Argus in a final battle. The group would apparently win this fight, and Knuckles would free any remaining trapped Echidnas. With his control of the planet gone, Eggman would flee, vowing revenge.[1]

Argus' motivations would also have been established in a final teaser: Long ago, after hearing from an oracle god that he would meet his death at the hands of a mortal, Argus began traveling the universe, and capturing any races possibly strong enough to oppose him, such as the Nocturnus Clan, in the Twilight Cage. However, it would be revealed that the oracle's prophecy was actually a lie, meant to trick Argus into amassing a large force of powerful beings who would destroy him once the Twilight Cage was opened.[1]
