The Type-J (タイプ-J Taipu-J?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Board-type Extreme Gear that is Jet the Hawk's personal choice and his default Extreme Gear. It is one of the first Extreme Gear available in every game in the Sonic Riders series.

The Type-J is a part of the Babylon Rogues' own unique series of Extreme Gear, constructed and customized by the team's own Extreme Gear mechanic, Wave the Swallow.

History[]

Sonic Riders series[]

Sonic Riders[]

The Babylon Rogues have their own special series of boards and this mean green Speed Type board is built especially for Jet, the infamous leader. Is it better than Sonic's board? Only time will tell.

— Description, Sonic Riders website.

Babylon Standard. Speed type W (Wave).

— Description, Sonic Riders[1]

The Type-J first appeared in Sonic Riders. According to its profile, it is a standard Extreme Gear for the Babylon Rogues. Wave specifically made it for the Speed Type. Due to the Type-J being tuned for the Speed Type character, Jet is an expert at using this Extreme Gear. It is only useable to Jet in this game.

The Type-J is designed in Sonic Riders as a basic, yet very detailed, green Board type Extreme Gear. The edge on the front has a stripe of forest green running across it, with one line down the middle. Also, the edges on the mid-section are mint green. Lastly, the foot plate on the upper surface of the Type-J is colored cadet gray and slate gray, with a yellow border around it.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, the Type-J is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics, an average rate of fuel-consumption and is suited for general riding.

Like most other character exclusive Extreme Gears, the Type-J does not possess any unique abilities of its own.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

Jet's gear, redesigned by Wave. Full of quirks, nobody but Jet could master this peaky ride.

Description, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

The Type-J later made a reappearance in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. According to its profile, it has been redesigned by Wave herself. This new version of the Type-J is purposely full of quirks, leaving it so only Jet would be able to master it. It is only useable to Jet in normal races, but is usable to all characters (except Dr. Eggman) in Survival Relay.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, the Type-J received a redesign that only vaguely resembles its old form. In this game, while still having a distinctive board shape, the Type-J is thicker than it was in Sonic Riders, giving it a more bulky appearance. Also, instead of green, it is primarily colored white, with several sleek streaks of green and yellow running along it. It also has purple circular foot pads on the upper surface and what appears to be orange hover units on the underside of the mid-section.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, the Type-J is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and is suited for general riding. Like most other character-exclusive Extreme Gears, the Type-J does not possess any unique abilities of its own.

Sonic Free Riders[]

Wave rebuilt this gear for Jet from the ground up. It uses a peaky tuning only Jet can properly control.

Description, Sonic Free Riders

The Type-J made another reappearance in Sonic Free Riders. According to its profile, it was rebuilt by Wave with a peaky tuning that only Jet would be able to control. It is only useable to Jet in normal races, but is usable to all characters (except Dr. Eggman and Vector) in Relay Race.

In Sonic Free Riders, the Type-J received a new redesign. In this game, the Type-J gains a much darker color scheme, being primarily colored pigment green. It also possesses large pine green and white accents and its upper surface is decorated with white and yellow markings and streaks. It also returns to having a more board-like shape like it had in Sonic Riders.

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Free Riders, the Type-J is, like in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and is suited for general riding.

Like in the previous titles, the Type-J possesses no unique abilities of its own, but it can be equipped with two Gear Parts.

Having targeted the Mineral Museum in Spiral Hill Village, which held valuable minerals, Jet used his Type-J to plunder the Mineral Museum and escape back to the blimp with the spoils.[2]

All or Nothing[]

Having accepted the task of claiming Master Zik's Chaos Emerald, Jet rode the Type-J through a portal provided by Tails and Dr. Eggman's Multi-Portal Generator to Zik's location from Angel Island with his team. When Jet and his team confronted Zik though, the latter used his powers to take control of the Type-J and the team's other Extreme Gear. Zik proceeded to use the Type-J while attacking the Babylon Rogues until Jet knocked him off it.[3] With his reclaimed Type-J, Jet tied Zik's Chaos Emerald to it when they retrieved it and sent it back to Angel Island through the portal they came through. There, the Type-J was grabbed by Metal Sonic and the Chaos Emerald by Eggman.[4]

Another Grand Adventure for Jet the Hawk[]

Sometime after the Metal Virus' eradication, Jet used the Type-J to pursue Whisper's Cyan Wisp after it stole his calzone, only to be caught by a giant Super-Badnik. At his urging, Whisper took to the air on the Type-J, which she struggled to control as she had never ridden an Extreme Gear before. Regardless, she was able to position herself to snipe the Super-Badnik with her Variable Wispon, saving Jet. Whisper then hopped off the Type-J and took her leave.[5]

Other game appearances[]
