Turtloids (ドースン,Dawson[1]?) are recurring enemies in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are turtle-based Badniks created by Dr. Eggman and function as two separate Badniks: one large unit that is able to hover and a small unit which rides the bigger one. They are always seen in pairs.
Turtloids consist of two robots: one large and one small. They are based on turtles, hence their name. The larger, tired-looking robots possess two grey jet engines on their backside instead of hindlegs. They also have a grey metallic head with a turtle nose and front legs. They also got a large, green shell with two small arrow sticker on both sides and a yellow underbelly. The smaller turtle robots stand on the larger ones' back, apparently piloting them while hanging onto the pole set on the larger ones' shell. These smaller variants are very similar to the big ones, with exception of being able to stand on two back feet and having more enthusiastic expressions.
Turtloids in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 are more detailed. Here, they have a more turtle-looking design and slightly larger jet engines. The top of the larger Badniks have a straighter platform for smaller ones to hang on. In Sonic Lost World, they are chubbier and the smaller Badniks have yellow pacifiers in their mouths.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
First appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Turtloids are sent to as an air strike in Sky Chase Zone. In gameplay, the larger Badniks move slowly forward through midair and will shoot one small sparkling projectile at the playable characters directly in front of them upon spotting them. These projectiles move slightly faster than the Turtloids. The smaller Badniks do nothing but control the larger ones they ride.
The larger Badniks cannot be destroyed, but they will float harmlessly through the air once their riders are gone. After the small one is destroyed, the player can also hop onto the larger one's shell as a platform from the Tornado.
Sonic Rivals
Turtloids make a small appearance as a collectible card in Sonic Rivals.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II
Turtloids make a return appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, where they are featured at Sky Fortress Zone 1 and 2. These Badniks have the same attack pattern as in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but come in a new, upgraded design. They are guarding the Metal Carrier ridden by Metal Sonic in the first act. In the second act, they float by Sky Fortress Zone. The player can used the Homing Attack to hit the smaller Badniks easily and stepping above on the bigger one, making it wobble.
Sonic Lost World
In the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, Turtloids appear regularly in Tropical CoastZone ?, Sky Road Zone 3 and Hidden World Zone 2. During the game's storyline, the Badniks, the Turtloids included, got hijacked by the Deadly Six. In the game, their attack pattern is relatively the same as in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In Hidden World Zone 2, Turtloids do not have smaller Badniks riding on them, as the larger Badniks function as hovering obstacles that cannot be defeated.
Sonic Mania
In Sonic Mania, Turtloids appear in Sonic and Tails' version of Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1. In this game, they have been resigned to resembled red armadillos. Other than that, they act like how the Turtloids acted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Powers and abilities
Larger Turtloids are able to fly by using their hind legs as rocket engines and can shoot energy balls from their mouths. Their offensive capabilities seem to be controlled by the smaller Turtloids. If the smaller turtle is destroyed, the larger one is rendered completely harmless.
Turtloids made only one appearance in the original run of Fleetway's Sonic the Comicissue 20' story "Hill Top Terror", where they are standard flying units in Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army.
Similar looking, small turtle Badnik has be seen in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, as one of two missiles of Robotnik's purple Egg Mobile. While the rabbit missile manages to be success to hit Tornado, while Robotnik thinks the turtle missile being design failure due being slow moving in the air. In the ending of movie, it is still seen hovering in the air, while Robotnik gloats about creatin a new, stronger Hyper Metal Sonic with his CD copy including Sonic's copied abilities. Suddenly the turtle robot appears and catches the CD, exploded with it right in front of Robotnik's face.
Trivia
In Tails' Skypatrol, a turtle enemy called Dorigame bears a heavy resemblance to the smaller Badniks. However, they are not seen with their inseparable counterparts and have totally different behavior.
