The Transformation Gate is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are gates which mark a location where racers' vehicles change modes during races.
A Transformation Gate is simply a circular blue frame. It does not have any specific shape, and is "docked" in some parts of the race tracks. In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, they are colored green, and show the type of vehicle that it will change into.
In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Transformation Gates appear at various specified points on each track. Once a racer steers their vehicle through the gate, their vehicle will transform into one of its three alternate forms: car, boat, or plane. The form that the vehicle transforms into will depend on the layout of the racing track that lies beyond the Transformation Gate.
If the player performs a stunt in mid-air after passing through the Transformation Gate and successfully makes the landing, their vehicle will perform a "Transform Boost", granting a temporary boost of speed to the player and can undergo the same stunt-chaining mechanics as with a normal jump. However, this only works when transitioning from plane to either boat-or-car, or whenever car-and-boat states transition into one another only from a high enough height; vehicle state is also reset upon passing through a gate, such as drift states being cancelled out upon passing through.
Transformation Gates appear in every track except those in the Classic Cup, as the tracks in that cup are returning tracks from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, which lacked the Transformation Gates.
The Transformation Gates return in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, where Machines and Extreme Gear can transform into either land, boat, or plane, depending on the layout of the track the player is racing on.
A gameplay glitch allows the player to bypass Transformation Gates, but patches in some versions of the game have prevented this from happening.
Certain transformation gates, akin to specific jumps, are infamous in the console, PC and Vita ports for a "stunt locking bug" which forces the game to consume/lock a stunt done too early from certain transformation gates, and will cause the said locked stunt to be performed during the next possible jump in tandem with another stunt (which can cause unintended combination fails).
