The Tornado[1] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a uniquely designed aircraft built by the Ancients,[2] but was eventually abandoned. It was rediscovered several centuries later, where it would be used by Team Sonic for a while, with Tails serving as its primary pilot.

Description

Appearance

The Tornado is a medium-sized blue aircraft. Like other biplanes, it has two main wings stacked one above the other, but are so close together that they have smaller distance between them that the Tornado's airframe. Between the middle of the wings on each side it has a propeller, but without a propeller on the nose. The nose rim and the wings' sides are yellow and the tip of the wings are each adorned with a light blue light. It also has a raise and wide empennage. The Tornado also possesses two open cockpits with windshields, but instead of being aligned along the airframe, they are placed side-by-side.

Features and abilities

The Tornado possesses two propellers for momentum with retractable energy blades. When active, the propellers leave a helix-shaped contrail. When stationary, the Tornado is capable of hovering slightly above ground, allowing for quick take-off.[3]

History

Games

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Created by the civilization known as the Ancients, the Tornado eventually ended up buried (presumed to be due to crashing or an avalanche) at what would become Cliff's Excavation Site.

About a thousand years later, the Tornado was discovered by Cliff and his workers during an excavation. During their visit, Team Sonic stumbled upon the Tornado, which Tails was confident he could fly. When the quartet later needed to go to Bygone Island, Cliff prepped the Tornado up and used it to bring the heroes to their intended location. It was soon after used by Sonic and Tails to reach the Sky Citadel when the Seaside Harbor Light failed to bring them there. As the citadel began falling apart shortly after, Team Sonic used the Tornado to escape the city and pursue Lyric the Last Ancient to his lair, although the Tornado took a beating when it landed.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, the Tornado was original a part of an abandoned vehicle hangar from the Ancients stationed in Volcanic Crater. When Team Sonic got stuck in the volcano as it was about erupt, the group located the Tornado and used it to escape and reach Cloud Sanctuary, the stronghold of Lyric the Last Ancient, who had kidnapped Amy.

TV series

While Sonic was facing Burnbot, Tails flew into the fray in the Tornado and helped Sonic attack Burnbot by having Sonic swing into the robot with an Enerbeam hanging from him in the Tornado. However, the Tornado's wing was clipped by Burnbot as it recovered, and with the Tornado's ejector seat having failed, Tails crashed with his biplane. Tails later patched the Tornado together and used it to race after Dr. Eggman and Burnbot when they competed to be Sonic's new sidekick, but it was damaged by Burnbot again and crashed in a frozen lake with Tails where it sunk.[3]

Trivia

  • Despite its resemblance to a biplane, Tails has speculated that the Tornado is not technically a plane at all.[4]
