The Tornado[1] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It is a single-seated, souped-up vintage-style biplane. It is typically piloted by Miles "Tails" Prower.

The Tornado is often used by Sonic and Tails for traveling to far off places, or to chase down large flying enemies, such as airships created by Dr. Eggman.

The Tornado is an old vintage biplane. On each side is attached two gray main wings with red tips, and between each side's two wings is a pole that runs perpendicular to the wings. Its red fuselage has a power plant with a grey tractor screw and the word "SONIC" written in white on both sides with stretchy F-letter labels underlining them. The cockpit has only one seat. Its empennage has two small horizontal stabilizers and one vertical stabilizer, the latter emblazoned with an emblem of a Bumper with wings.

Features and abilities

The Tornado is highly maneuverable. With its jet engine, it is able to fly at impressive speeds. It also comes equipped with a radar.[2]

When Sonic and Tails flew through the sky in the Tornado, they came across an Egg Fleet battleship. Believing they could get some useful data on the recent Badnik troop movements from the battleship, Tails gave Sonic his Miles Electric to use to download any information from the ship's computer. Accepting the task, Sonic left the Tornado and infiltrated the battleship. However, when Sonic fell off the battleship following a battle with Neo Metal Sonic, Tails caught Sonic on the Tornado and escaped Neo Metal Sonic's ship.[1]

Eventually, Tails made a new jet booster prototype for the Tornado to increase its flying speed. Taking it out for a test drive, Tails let Sonic steer the Tornado, believing he was the best suited for this test. On the way however, the duo encountered a Stealth Balkiry who had stolen supplies from the Resistance. In order to catch up the Stealth Balkiry, Sonic activated the new jet booster. However, Sonic was forced to keep the Tornado on a stable course, or the stress would tear it apart. To make matters worse, Sonic had broken the jet booster's off button. Regardless, the duo managed to force the Stealth Balkiry to fly into a geyser that made it drop the supplies. Tails then wanted to drop the jet booster on the Stealth Balkiry, but Sonic refused to let Tails' work go to waste. As such, he let Tails take the Tornado's controls while he jumped out of the Tornado and destroyed the Stealth Balkiry. Tails then caught Sonic, and the two decided to fly around in the Tornado until the jet booster ran out so fuel so they could land.[2]
