Dr. Eggman brutalizes a pair of totem poles with the Egg Hammer to launch arrows at our heroes.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Egg Hammer[1] (トンカチエッグマン[2] Tonkachi Egguman?, lit. "Hammer Eggman"), also known as the Tonkachi Eggman,[3] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a modification of Eggman's Mobile created by Dr. Robotnik, who used it during the West Side Island incident.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Egg Hammer looks almost identical to the standard form of Eggman's Mobile, except that it has a giant hammer with a red head and yellow faces on its front, and two rocket thrusters on the sides.

Features and abilities[]

In addition to being capable of flight, the Egg Hammer can move its hammer to hit its targets.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Egg Hammer was used by Dr. Robotnik to fight Sonic and Tails in Aquatic Ruin Zone. However, the Egg Hammer was destroyed by the duo, forcing Robotnik to flee.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Jam (Game.com)[]

In Sonic Jam (Game.com), the Egg Hammer appears as one of the bosses in Emerald Hill Zone.

Battle[]

The Egg Hammer is the boss of Aquatic Ruin Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, its various ports and remasters, and the lock-on game Knuckles in Sonic 2; and the third boss overall in these games. It is also the third boss of Boss Attack Zone in the 2013 remaster of the game. In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Egg Hammer is fought with Sonic and/or Tails, while in Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the 2013 remaster of the game, it can also be fought with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

The battle takes place on a flat area with two rocky totem poles with four faces on the sides. Robotnik himself then arrives to fly around the top with his giant hammer. The player is unable to reach the Egg Mobile by jumping normally, so they have to think another way to get to the top. Robotnik will hit the tops of each totem pole, and one of four heads will shoot an arrow out of its mouth. These arrows can damage the player while flying.

Arrows can create climbing poles after hitting the other totem pole, which usually gives the player a chance to get on top of the totem poles, and hit Robotnik freely. When the player climbs once to the arrow, it will be severed by standing on for second.

The Egg Hammer takes eight hits to defeat, after which the player can open up the Capsule and finish the Zone.

Knuckles cannot jump onto the arrows at the top notch of the pole, cannot reach the Egg Hammer at the bottom notch of the pole, and is unable to climb on totem poles. Because of this, the Egg Hammer boss fight can be a little challenging as Knuckles.

This fight can be completed rather easily by jumping on top of one of the totem poles before it raises to the top; doing so, you can remain out of harm's way from the arrows and hit the Egg Mobile from above easily, ricocheting back onto the totem pole.

Trivia[]

  • This boss battle battle is referenced in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II in the boss battle of Sylvania Castle Zone. At the start of the battle, the pillars from the original battle appear to trick the player into thinking they are going to fight a remake of the Egg Hammer boss. However, the pillars are destroyed by the mechanical tentacles of the Egg Serpentleaf, which turns out to be the real boss of the Zone.
  • When Robotnik hits the top of totem pole, one of faces that shoots an arrow is seen to have panic expression due the tremble that the Egg Mobile's hammer causes.
