A beautiful city... It looks like how Maria described the Earth.

Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow Generations

Tokyo (also written as [Extra]TOKYO) is a bonus stage in Shadow Generations that is exclusive to the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack DLC that can be purchased either separately or with the Digital Deluxe edition of the game.

It is based on the location of the same name in Japan from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film.

Description[]

Tokyo is based on the real-world metropolis of Tokyo, Japan, the capital city of Japan and one of the most populous urban areas on the Earth. The stage is set at night and features several iconic landmarks of Tokyo, such as the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and the Tokyo Skytree, and also incorporates portions of the city's famous transit system and underground metro stations. The darkness of the city is lit up with street lights and colorful signs, many of which reference characters or locations in the Sonic franchise. The entire area has a realistic art style, meant to resemble the live-action film Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Story[]

While traveling through White Space, Shadow stumbles upon a small purple wormhole. It transforms into a ring that gradually expands into a portal, revealing Tokyo, Japan on the other side.

Cautiously, Shadow reaches out and touches the portal, only to be suddenly pulled through. He emerges on the other side, crashing into the streets of Tokyo, Japan of another universe. He looks around to see debris and crashed tanks all around him, left behind by his counterpart of that universe. As he surveys the scene, Shadow discovers he has taken on the appearance and voice of his alternate self.

Realizing he has crossed into another universe, Shadow wonders if this is another Black Doom's doing.[1] He notices a G.U.N. helicopter flying overhead. Suspicious, he decides to follow it closely. After making his way through the city, dodging missiles and taking down G.U.N. forces, Shadow finally reaches the Tokyo Skytree. He starts boosting up the tower just as the G.U.N. helicopter begins firing missiles at him. He skillfully reaches the top of the tower, closing in on the helicopter and damaging it enough to send it plummeting to the ground below.

As Shadow walks around the top of the Skytree, he sees the Ring Gate opening again in the sky, which will take him back to White Space. Just then, more G.U.N. helicopters surround him, launching homing missiles in his direction. Unfazed, Shadow uses Chaos Control to redirect the missiles away from him. He mutters that he doesn't have time for this and needs to finish his mission, but comments that he is interested in this place and that he'll be back if he had another chance.[2] With a single Chaos Spear, he destroys one of the missiles, causing a fiery explosion that makes the rest explode in a firework-like fashion. Without missing a beat, Shadow leaps through the Ring Gate and transforms back into his normal self.

Trivia[]

  • Doom Powers are disabled in both the stage and its associated Challenge Acts. Shadow himself comments on this, noting that he has retained his basic abilities.[3]
  • The voice lines associated with this stage are exclusively in English regardless of what voice language the game is set to. This is despite Shadow's movie incarnation having foreign voice actors in most if not all of the languages the game proper was dubbed in.
  • The music for this level features a lengthy and dramatic intro that scores the opening cutscene. This extended intro doesn't play during the Challenge Acts.
  • In the Japanese script, Shadow wonders if he is in Tokyo due to the power of Black Doom.[1] However, considering that he is in another universe, it is more likely due to the power of Time Eater.
  • The model used for the GUN Helicopter is reused from Sonic Frontiers.
  • This stage marks the first time a GUN Soldier is physically seen in a mainline game since Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
    • Coincidentally, it also echoes a scene from the Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings episode "To the ARK", where Shadow breaks open the helicopter, seemingly preparing to attack, but ultimately allows the pilot to escape and parachute to safety, mirroring the episode's events.
  • Because of cutscenes being rendered in real-time, numerous versions of cutscenes "The Ring Gate Appears", "To the World of Movies" and "Return from TOKYO" can occur. Despite this, the version played in the Collection Room will always play the one where only Space Colony ARK Act 1 is beaten.
    • The in-game cutscenes during gameplay, however, will remain active depending if it is only White Space or the Doom Zone.
  • The events of this stage have stated by Shun Nakamura to be treated more as bonus content rather than part of the main story or the film.[4]
  • This is the only stage in the game that does not end with a Goal Ring, instead ending on a quick time event cutscene.
  • This is the only stage in the game that only has a single Act, rather than two.
