The Time Switch comprises of two units: a pedestal and a half-cut ball. The pedestal is black, decagon-shaped and is decorated with markings with a cream-colored border around it. The center is raised slightly to form a round hole from above and there are also six holes on the surface each emitting yellow light. This hole is surrounded by a lavender border. The ball is decorated with markings similar to the pedestal's and has two small rings orbiting around it.
Overview[]
In Sonic Adventure 2, and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Time Switches are found exclusively in Cannon's Core.
When used, it stops the flow of time, freezing enemies, obstacles, the background and the elapsed time in a Stage, though it cannot freeze doors and some trap platforms. However, each Time Switch lasts only for a specified period before time returns to normal.
To use it in gameplay, the player must simply touch the orb or shoot it. The Time Switch will then beep and light up intermittently until its effects end.
There is a glitch where if Rouge and Sonic can perform certain actions while using the Time Switches, it is possible to freeze time for the entirety of their sections of the stage. The effect wears off if the player touches another switch or comes back into proximity of the switch used for the permanent time freeze.
In Rouge's section, this is accomplished by using the very first switch they encounter at the top of the starting room that they are required to use. By having Rouge fly into the switch to trigger it and then quickly using the Drill Drive to reach back down to the ground quickly enough, the player can accomplish the permanent time freeze for this section.
In Sonic's section, this is accomplished by using the very first switch they encounter, then the player can charge and execute a Spin Dash to quickly trigger the switch and cross the gap, thereby successfully pulling off the permanent time freeze for this section.
When asked on BumbleKast about why Time Switches do not affect the playable characters in Cannon's Core, IDW comics writer Ian Flynn expressed his opinion that these switches might be part of early experiments done by Gerald Robotnik to understand Chaos Control. Hence, explaining the inconsistency in the targets they freeze in time.[3]
