The Time Hole[1] is a phenomenon that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of portal created by the Time Eater that leads to different points across space and time.
Time Holes are a certain type of portals that come in two distinct designs. Basic Time Holes take the form of circular portals with a dark purple and smoky outer edge and a purple void in the center. Sometimes though, they may have reflective surfaces showcasing the location they lead to. The type of Time Holes utilized by the completed Time Eater for their warping arm attack however is a circular portal with an outer edge resembling a golden rotating gear and a purple surface made up of hexagonal facets.
Time Holes are rifts in space and time that the Time Eater can exclusively create at will. These portals can lead to virtually any location and any period in time. The Time Holes can even connect to alternate timelines such as Crisis City or Stardust Speedway's bad future, both of which are supposed to be removed from the original timeline. The Time Eater can even weaponize Time Holes; by slipping one of its hands into a Time Hole and out the other end, it is able to launch surprise attack on opponents from afar. The Time Eater can well select a specific point in the future for the exit from the Time Hole to appear, making its attack much more difficult to predict.
When the Time Holes are utilized by the Time Eater, it has the unfortunate side-effect of tearing space apart by removing places from their time, draining them of color and life, and sending them to White Space.[2] This process effectively damages the world and throws the universe into chaos.[1][3]
History[]
Sonic Generations[]
In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Time Holes were used repeatedly by Modern Eggman with the Time Eater. After using a Time Hole to enter the distant past, the Time Eater would emerge from another one and intrude on Modern Sonic's birthday party. There, it opened several Time Holes and sucked Modern Sonic's friends into each of them, flinging them through time to bait Modern Eggman's traps for Modern Sonic. Soon after, the Time Eater used a Time Hole to intrude upon the aftermath of Classic Sonic's battle with Classic Eggman and his Death Egg Robot, and abduct Classic Eggman. Following that, the Time Eater would pass through more Time Holes while it came through White Space. The Time Eater soon after used its Time Holes again to swoop in on the site of Modern Sonic's victory over Modern Eggman and his Egg Dragoon, and take Modern Eggman away.
When Modern and Classic Sonic finally confronted the Time Eater, Modern Eggman had it use a Time Hole for a warping arm attack that momentarily knocked out the Sonics. Afterward, following the Time Eater's defeat, Classic Sonic and Classic Tails used a stray Time Hole to return to the past.
