These critters hover along, emitting high-voltage bursts periodically. If they spot Sonic, they'll make a bee-line for him. Not even their designer is 100% sure how they float like that.

— Description, Sonic Unleashed[1]

The Thunder Ball[1] (サンダーボール[2] Sandā Bõru?) is an enemy that appears in Sonic Unleashed. They are a model of Badniks created by Dr. Eggman which can float in mid-air and discharge electricity.

The Thunder Balls all have slightly prolate spheroid-shaped bodies that resemble a head, which are carolina blue in color. They have a thick green stripe with golden edges on their forehead, an "eye socket" of black circuitry with a yellow eye on the front, and a row of pale yellow lights resembling a mouth below their eye. On each side, they have four silver spikes with holes attached to a moving disk which is fastened by a green bolt.

In gameplay, the Thunder Balls attack by periodically discharging electricity. Whenever the player touches them while they are discharging, Sonic becomes paralyzed and unable to move for a short time.

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, the Thunder Balls appear in the nighttime Dragon Road Act 1, nighttime Arid Sands Act 1 and Eggmanland. In gameplay, the Thunder Balls will follow Sonic's trail when they spot him; if the player makes a turn to the left, the Thunder Balls will turn to the left as well at that point. However, they are very slow. In the nighttime Action Stages, the Thunder Balls mostly serve as a means for the player to electrocute enemies by grabbing them and then throwing it into a pool of water with enemies.

In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, the Thunder Balls only appear in the daytime Stages of Cool Edge, Dragon Road and Arid Sands. In gameplay, the Thunder Balls behave very much like the Thunder Spinners, basically hovering in mid-air where they discharge electricity.

Powers and abilities

The Thunder Balls have the ability to hover and move in mid-air through means that not even Dr. Eggman knows for certain.[1] They also come equipped with the ability to discharge electricity from their bodies, allowing them to electrocute their opponents.
