Thorny is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics. He is a Mobian Needle Bird (half bird, half porcupine).

History[]

One day, the bird attempted to fly out of a tree, but he fell and drooped directly onto Sonic the Hedgehog's head. Sonic noticed he hurt his wing and fed him some needle berries. He then remembered it was Sally's birthday, and decided to give the bird for her birthday and named it "Thorny". However, when Sally saw Thorny, she ordered Sonic to get rid of it, thinking it might be another trap by Robotnik. Sonic pleaded for Thorny to stay, saying he had inquired. Unfortunately, Thorny ate Sally's needle berry birthday cake, making Sally yell at Sonic for it to leave.[1]

Sonic reluctantly found a new home for Thorny high up in a tree. Suddenly though, Sonic heard Sally's scream and abruptly left Thorny to save her from one of Robotnik's forest traps. Sonic dashed in the direction of the shriek, but was unable to locate the tree which was holding Sally. Just before Sonic was caught by another forest trap, Thorny snatched Sonic up into the air and flew the hedgehog over to Sally. Sonic disarmed the tree, but found Robotnik pointing a freeze gun at him. Fortunately, Thorny swooped overhead, droped an egg on Robotnik's head, and sent a number of needles into the villain's rear end. Sally thanked Thorny for saving them and they made him an honorary Freedom Fighter.[1]
