Thirteen[1] (サーティーン[1] Sātīn?) is a character that was set to appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. During the early development of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Thirteen was created to serve as a placeholder antagonist until a final one could be decided upon. Like many other early ideas, the figure was scrapped before the final release.
Concept and creation[]
Thirteen was created sometime around 1989 as the main antagonist of "Twin Stars",[2] a game concept pitched to Sega by Naoto Ohshima. This concept would eventually evolve into Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), and as such, for a short period, Thirteen served as a placeholder antagonist for the game until the final antagonist, Dr. Eggman, was created.[3]
In retrospection, Ohshima reflected that if they had moved forward with the concept and left the 'Thirteen' name as it is, he is certain he would have created the figure as an enemy related to numbers.[4]
Appearance[]
Thirteen is a giant monstrous creature with a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth, a long nose, eyes with white pupils and red sclera, and at least one hand with three clawed fingers. Thirteen's torso and lower half are unseen.

Trivia[]
- The figure’s name, Thirteen, is in reference to superstitions regarding the number 13 being unlucky.[4]
- Thirteen’s appearance bears resemblance to a later antagonist in Sonic media, the wizard Naugus from the American canon. A character Dr. Robotnik once feared in their continuities.
