The Eggman Empire Fortress, the site of the final battle during the War, from Sonic the Hedgehog #1.

The War[1] is an event that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing. It was a global war that occurred in the recent history of Sonic's world between the Eggman Empire and the Resistance. The war lasted for a total of six months,[2] and was fought over the control of the world after Dr. Eggman launched a campaign for world domination.[3]

After capturing and locking up Sonic the Hedgehog, the Eggman Empire eventually took over the world. To liberate the world from the Eggman Empire's tyranny, the friends and allies of Sonic formed the Resistance. The ensuring conflict between the Resistance and the Eggman Empire marked what became known as the War. However, it was first after that Sonic joined the fight that the Resistance began pushing the Eggman Empire back, eventually winning the War altogether.[2] In the aftermath, the Resistance set out to restore the world from the war.[1] Regardless, the events that had transpired during the War would have a lasting impact on the world in the time that followed.

The passage of war

At the beginning of the War, Dr. Eggman managed to catch Sonic the Hedgehog off-guard and imprison him in a small cell in space.[2][3][4] With Sonic out of the game, the doctor and his Eggman Empire managed to take over the world.[2] Seeking to continue the fight, Sonic's allies formed a rag-tag army named the "Resistance", with Knuckles the Echidna as their commander, to push the Eggman Empire back and free the world from Eggman's tyranny.[3][5] One of the soldiers who joined the Resistance was Silver the Hedgehog, who had come to the past to change his future, which was a polluted nightmare where the Eggman Empire ruled and everyone lived in fear.[4]

Using the chipers for the Wisps' language provide to them before by Tails "went solo" due to Sonic's disappearance, the Resistance asked for the native Wisps' help in fighting Eggman. Agreeing happily to help, the Wisps allowed themselves to wait in Deployment Pods for when the Resistance's troops could enter an area.[5]

As the war progressed, villages all around the world would be harassed by Eggman's Badnik army. Some villages would turn their buildings into bunkers as defenses while others survived thanks to their fortifications.[1][5]

During the period where Sonic remained imprisoned, multiple units in the Resistance would be aided by a mysterious person who managed to turn the tide of battle. Among the Resistance soldiers she saved (on multiple occasions no less) would be Silver. Despite her alignment however, this "Guardian Angel" never joined the Resistance's army.[4]

The final days

Six months after his imprisonment, Sonic was freed by his friends and joined the Resistance.[1][2][4] With the final battle for the outcome of the War approaching, Eggman began the process of upgrading Metal Sonic into Neo Metal Sonic, who was to be the doctor's greatest weapon for the inevitable confrontation. As an added bonus, Eggman gave Neo Metal Sonic his bio-data in the form of his vision, genius and ambition. In the meantime, Eggman had phantoms of Metal Sonic fight in the robot's stead. However, Metal Sonic's upgrade would not be finished in time.[4]

Shortly before the war ended, the mercenaries Rough the Skunk and Tumble the Skunk saved Barricade Town from Eggman's forces. However, they soon after tricked the residents into letting them into their town, which they then took over. With Badniks continuing to stalk the town from the outside, the residents were trapped in their town and forced to obey Rough and Tumble.[5]

Eventually, Sonic and his allies confronted Dr. Eggman at his Eggman Empire Fortress. At the climax of that confrontation, Sonic faced off against Dr. Eggman and his Death Egg Robot. In the end, Sonic and the Resistance won the day, defeated Dr. Eggman, and broke the Eggman Empire's control over their world.[2][3]

After his defeat at the end of the War, Dr. Eggman vanished.[3] However, efforts were eventually made in order to track down the doctor and have him stand trial for his crimes.[6] Dr. Eggman's disappearance also meant that his Badnik army, which had been spread to every corner of the world during the War, was now without a leader to control it. As such, in their leaderless states, the Badniks would randomly attack anyone they could find, although such incidents were more accidental than aggression based.[1][3]

Recognizing that the world had been left in a terrible mess from the War and Dr. Eggman's operations, the Resistance set out to restore the world to its former glory.[1][5] With the unexpectedly large and directionless Badnik army getting in the way however, the Resistance began working to finish the fight more effectively by operating from a more centralized, organized position. With the war over, however, many Resistance members left the organization, including Sonic the Hedgehog.[1]

After the War had ended, Metal Sonic's upgrade into Neo Metal Sonic was finished. Learning of the outcome of the War, Neo Metal Sonic assumed leadership over the Eggman Empire in order to ensure its reign would remain unbroken. Neo Metal Sonic then began plotting to reconquer the world in Eggman's likeness using his shapeshifting abilities and find his creator so Eggman could reassume his position as ruler of the Eggman Empire without anyone being the wiser.[7] Approximately a month after the War had ended, Neo Metal Sonic began making his move by taking control of the wayward Badnik army, which he directed into a series of attacks on different villages. This prompted Sonic to travel around and stop the Badnik attacks with the aid of old and new allies.[1][2][3][5] Soon after, Neo Metal Sonic launched a takeover of Angel Island and its Master Emerald, but was defeated by Sonic and the Resistance.[4][5][7][8][9][10]
