Should this be deleted? I think so. --Bullet Francisco (talk) Contributions Editcount

Why? All of the other characters in the movie have a wiki article. MrSmartyMax 21:57, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

It dosen't need deleting, it just needs some work. Myself 123 21:58, August 6, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess. --Bullet Francisco (talk) Contributions Editcount

Umm... in the movie I heard Sara call him Mr. Mouse... Pokemonsonic345 (talk) 17:05, April 26, 2013 (UTC)

I heard her call him Mr. Mole. Myself 123 17:07, April 26, 2013 (UTC)

...Yeah. If he's a mole in this continuity, should the page be renamed? -- Supermorff (talk) 20:04, April 26, 2013 (UTC)

Well, I think he's a mole in the Japanese version of the film, and that aspect made its way into English translations, hence the above quote and a bio in the DVD. I can't remember if he's ever called an Echidna though. I may have to watch the film. Myself 123 20:14, April 26, 2013 (UTC)

Y'know, he isn't called an Echidna at any point, so I guess he is a mole in this continuity. Total mind blow. Myself 123 21:45, April 26, 2013 (UTC)

So, if he's called a mole, and not called an Echidna at any point, should we change the page to say he's a mole? Pokemonsonic345 (talk) 02:46, May 3, 2013 (UTC)

I think he'd just be "Knuckles (Movie character)". -- Supermorff (talk) 17:26, May 3, 2013 (UTC)
All things condsidered, the English names have always taken priority over the japanese names. And since we in the english version has never heard the "the Echidna" part of it, we should use "Knuckles (Movie character)". Ultrasonic9000 (talk) 17:51, May 3, 2013 (UTC)

Wow, two years has passed and we never acted on this discussion. But before I make changes, what's everyones view on listing this incarnation of Knuckles as a mole? Myself 123 22:29, December 7, 2015 (UTC)

The ad from Sonic Jam lists him as "Knuckles the Echidna" as usual. Supposedly, the English dub was rushed to promote the Dreamcast, so maybe the whole mole thing is just a translation error? SaucieX (talk) 22:50, December 7, 2015 (UTC)
Definitely a dub error. Even the Japanese commercials refer to him by his full name.Ultrasonic9000 (talk) 22:51, December 7, 2015 (UTC)
He's not referred to as an echidna or a mole in the movie (aside from "Mr. Mole" which is rather arbitrary). It's the DVD bio which calls him a mole, I doubt the DVD release has anything to do with a rushed dub. Myself 123 22:57, December 7, 2015 (UTC)
I think the film(s) only saw release on VHS in Japan, so the bio seems to have been made by ADV films. If I remember right, the first-run DVD does contain a better translation available via subtitles, but I forgot if it still refers to Knuckles as a mole in that one line (not that Sara's the brightest character, and it may only be leading into that weird whack-a-mole sight gag). Regardless, if you check out South Island Stories, it would actually seem that Knuckles was earlier called a "mole" in Japan to refer to his digging ability rather than the literal sense...or maybe no one at Sega really knew what an echidna was. SaucieX (talk) 23:20, December 7, 2015 (UTC)
Update: I figured out why early profiles did that - just as the Japanese word for hedgehog literally means "needlemouse" (ハリネズミ, harinezumi), the Japanese word for echidna literally means "needlemole" (ハリモグラ, harimogura). With that in account, this is most likely a simple play on words that didn't work well in translation. This word play is probably the reason Knuckles was chosen as an echidna in the first place, and also why Sonic is sometimes called a rodent despite hedgehogs not considered one. SaucieX (talk) 16:15, December 10, 2015 (UTC)
I thought that Japanese name for echidnas was "エキドナ, Ekidona"? Kokkino (talk) 11:21, June 16, 2019 (UTC)
