The Tag Action[1] (タッグアクション[2] Taggu Akushon?) is a technique that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of action performed by two different users working together[1] that gives the leader of the two a unique ability.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Advance 3[]

In Sonic Advance 3, the Tag Action[1] (タッグアクション[2] Taggu Akushon?) can be used to perform special abilities based on the partner character. Each character has two different Tag Actions: ground and mid-air. In order to perform either one of them, the player must press and hold Rgba to summon the partner character. When summoned, the player will hold the partner character in a ball and once Rgba is released, the player will perform the Tag Action. Each character's Tag Actions are as follows:

Character Tag Action
Ground Mid-air
Sonic Sonic Accelerator (ソニックアクセル[2] Sonikku Akuseru?): The player holds Sonic, who is forced into a Spin Attack. When released, the hedgehog will accelerate his partner in the direction they are facing.[2]
Tails Leap Jump (馬跳びジャンプ[2] Umatobi Janpu?): Using Tails as a jumping box, the player jumps diagonally upwards.[2] Propeller Catch (プロペラキャッチ[2] Puropera Kyatchi?): The player will be carried by Tails' Propeller Flying ability for a short time.[2]
Knuckles Knuckleball (ナックルボール[2] Nakkurubōru?): The player launches a spinning Knuckles forward,[2] allowing them to destroy special walls that can only be otherwise destroyed by a Power Type team. Gliding Ride (滑空ライド[2] Kakkū Raido?): The player will ride on Knuckles' back while the latter glides;[2] however, the character will fall off if the echidna touches a wall.
Amy Hammer Spring (ハンマースプリング[2] Hanmā Supuringu?): Amy hits the player character with her Pikopiko Hammer to launch them high into the air.[2]
Cream Chao Attack (チャオの攻撃 Chao no kōgeki?): Cheese will look like the leader character, and the player can press GameboyB to perform a Chao Attack just like Cream would do on her own. Performing this move in mid-air will also send the player upwards.
Eggman Only useable during the Nonaggression boss fight with Ultimate Gemerl. When Rgba is held, Super Sonic charges Eggman with energy; when the button is released, the doctor will be launched forward and if he hits Ultimate Gemerl's mouth, it will expose his weak spot and allowing the player to damage the robot. How long the weak spot stays open is determined by how long the player holds Rgba

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Hammer Spring Tag Action makes an appearance.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, Tag Actions are utilized by Sonic and Tails, who both share the same Tag Actions. As with Sonic Advance 3, there are different types of Tag Actions depending on where the Tag Action is performed. However, unlike Sonic Advance 3, the player simply has to press XboxX/Square to perform a Tag Action. A notable feature about Tag Actions in this game is that they force Super Sonic to revert back to his base form whenever they are used. There are three main Tag Actions in the game:

  • Rolling Combo: When performed on the ground, the characters will perform the Rolling Combo, a stronger version of the Spin Attack.
  • Copter Combo: When performed in the air, the characters will perform the Copter Combo, allowing Tails to carry Sonic in the air for a limited time.
  • Submarine Combo: Performing an Tag Action whilst not on the ground when underwater performs the Submarine Combo, which allows Tails to carry Sonic underwater; this grants the player the ability to propel themselves underwater and move freely in any direction. Unlike the standard air Tag Action, Tails will not tire and can swim indefinitely.

In Act 1 and the Boss of Sky Fortress Zone, the player can use the Tag Action to perform a Tornado Boost while standing on the Tornado. The Tornado Boost allows the player to smash through containers that may be in the way. However, it does not cause Super Sonic to revert back to normal.
