The Swordsman Guard[1] (ソーズマン・ディフェンダー[2] Sōzuman difendā?, lit. "Swordsman Defender") is an enemy that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a mass-produced model of Destruction Troops created by Lyric the Last Ancient and a more advanced version of the Swordsman Trooper that wields a shield for protection.

Appearance[]

The Swordsman Guards are identical to the stronger variant of the Swordsman Trooper, being humanoid robots with white armor, red joints and cyan lights. They have slightly short arms and legs compared to their torso, pointy shoulders, a three-fingered right hand with claws, a glowing cyan sword for their left hand resembling a long tuning fork, no visible neck, a cyan eye with a slit-like pupil and a forked horn on top for a head, and a ring-shaped collar.

Overview[]

The Swordsman Guards were made by Lyric the Last Ancient about a millennium ago to aid with his plans to destroy the earth's lifeforms and conquer it. When Lyric was imprisoned before achieving his goal, the Swordsman Guards were shut down.[3] However, as a contingency plan, Lyric left some of them behind to be found so the finders could set him free to learn the Swordsman Guards' secrets.[4] When Lyric escaped in present-day, he reactivated and/or reclaimed his Swordsman Guards to have them aid his schemes and battle Team Sonic.

The Swordsman Guards do not appear often, but become more common as the player advances. They are encountered in The Pit, Slowpoke Isle, Ocean Purification Plant, Creeper Gorge, Sky Citadel and Lyric's Lair. In gameplay, they behave much like the stronger variant of the Swordsman Trooper: they attack with sword swings and can perform quick dashes with their jet packs to both close in on the characters and dodge attacks by moving around. For protection, they use their shields which can bounce back and negate the damage from most attacks. To remove this shield, the player can either pull it away with the Enerbeam or hit it with a Charge Attack. Additionally, they can make themselves invulnerable to damage and unfazed by attacks for a few seconds by surrounding themselves in a blue aura.

The Swordsman Guards are fairly tough opponents due to their abilities and can deal heavy damage. They also have much more health and greater speed that the regular Swordsman Troopers. When defeated, they release varying amount of Robot Scrap and three Rings.

After Team Sonic defeated Lyric, all the Swordsman Guards were subsequently scrapped.

Personality[]

Being programmed to obey his every command,[3] the Swordsman Guards are essentially mindless and silent drones unwaveringly loyal to Lyric the Last Ancient. Their loyalty is only superficial however, as the Swordsman Guards are just soulless machines adhering to their programing, meaning their allegiance can easily shift when someone else takes control of them.

Power and abilities[]

The Swordsman Guards possess retractable swords on their left arm for combat. They also have at least passable skills in swordsmanship, using their sword for both offense and defense. Additionally, they can temporarily cloak their entire bodies in a blue force field, making them invulnerable to harm, and have jets equipped on their backs which let them perform midair dashes.

Weapons[]

The Swordsman Guards each wield a metal frame on their right arm which can generate a blue energy shield. These shields can deflect weak attacks, but break under powerful strikes.

Trivia[]

  • The Swordsman Guards' name was not revealed in the final version of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. However, their name is listed in an unused biography for the game.[1]

His race was devoted to peacefully controlling the world’s resources. Driven mad by power, Lyric turned on his fellow Ancients and took control of the resources. Building an army of robots programmed to obey his every command, the deadly snake-like villain set out to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. However, just before he could successfully take over, he was attacked by the last surviving Ancients and imprisoned forever. With his army shut down and his plans ruined, he waited in prison plotting his revenge. Years passed and Lyric began to give up hope. That is, until Sonic comes across him. Now with his army rebooted, and his plans in place, the only thing stopping Lyric from total victory is Sonic and his friends."
