The Sword of Acorns is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It was a magical sword forged from the Source of All along with the Crown of Acorns. Originally held by King Maximillian Acorn, it was lost after Dr. Ivo Robotnik seized power and eventually came into the hands of the dark wizard Mathias Poe. It was later retrieved by Knuckles the Echidna at the behest of Sally Acorn, only to be stolen by Mammoth Mogul. It was kept in Knothole for a time by Princess Sally, and then turned over to the Arachne Clan after it tried to dominate her will. They used it to release Ixis Naugus from the Zone of Silence, and he wielded it for a time before turning it over to Mogul, who used it and the Crown in combination until both were destroyed by Sir Connery.

Description[]

Powers and traits[]

The Sword of Acorns was shown to have a variety of magical abilities. It could amplify Chaos and other arcane energies, as well as acting as a sort of super conductor that could drain a person of such energies in a manner similar to that of a Chaos Syphon. The Sword, as a portion of the Source of All, was sentient, and possessed the ability to dominate the minds of others, controlling them or releasing them from other sources of control. When wielded by someone who could utilize its power, it could also unleash powerful energy, enough to counter dark magic or produce devastating blasts. Additionally, it could either open or enlarge tears in the walls between dimensions, allowing Ixis Naugus to escape the Zone of Silence without any side effects. Its abilities expanded and became stronger when used in conjunction with the Crown, such as healing those its energy was exposed to. A select few could use the sword's magical powers, the most notable being Max and Sally due to their exposure to the Source of All pool; however, various dark magic users could also utilize the sword.

History[]

Creation, loss and reclaim[]

The Sword of Acorns was created after Maximillian Acorn, a prince at the time, first had contact with the Source of All. As he emerged, the substance of the Source was drained off his body and gathered by servants of his father King Frederick Acorn and forged into the Sword and Crown of Acorns. The artifacts were thus imbued with magical properties, which Max wielded during his reign. When Dr. Ivo Robotnik came to power, the Sword was lost.[1] Afterwards, it somehow ended up in the possession of the Raven Mathias Poe, who concealed it within a dummy made to resemble Damocles the Elder, a fellow evil spell caster. Poe used it to amplify his own magical abilities for years until Knuckles the Echidna came in search of it. After battling Poe, he defeated the wizard and retrieved the Sword.[2]

Theft and recovery[]

Not long after Knuckles found the Sword of Acorns, he contacted the Knothole Freedom Fighters so that they could come and retrieve it. However, Mammoth Mogul and his Fearsome Foursome had other plans, which revolved around turning the Chaotix and the Freedom Fighters against each other. Both groups fought briefly after meeting magically disguised members of the Fearsome Foursome made to look like members of the other team, but the scheme was thwarted by the cool thinking of Princess Sally and Archimedes the Fire Ant. Mogul managed to obtain the Sword despite the defeat of his minions, and used it to amplify his weakened Chaos powers as he fought both teams of heroes. Unable to overcome them, he faked his own demise and left them with a counterfeit Sword.[3]

Mogul would later use the real sword to drain Enerjak of his power after bringing him back to Mobius, causing him to regress back into his true identity of Dimitri.[4] Transformed into Master Mogul, he thought his victory was assured, but was then defeated by the combined efforts of Super Sonic, Turbo Tails, Hyper Knuckles, the Ancient Walkers, and the Brotherhood of Guardians. With Mogul neutralized as a threat, the Sword was recovered and turned over to Sally.[5]

Use by Max, Sonic and Sally[]

Returning to Mobotropolis with the Sword, Sonic the Hedgehog used it to free King Max from the control of Ixis Naugus and from the crystallizing effect that had been overcoming him for some time. The Sword was needed to locate the Crown of Acorns in the Hall of Limbo, which turned out to be inside Max's own mind, and the two artifacts healed their rightful user of his ailments. Sonic also used it against Naugus, though not as effectively as a member of the House of Acorn.[6]

Later, when it was discovered that the Sword of Acorns could free the minds of Robians, Sonic stole it and set out to free Sir Charles Hedgehog, his beloved uncle.[7][8] Dr. Eggman gained possession of the Sword but found himself unable to use it, though he did inadvertently free Uncle Chuck himself, as well as Sonic's beloved dog Muttski. The Sword was then lost to Warlord Kodos, former Warlord of the Kingdom of Acorn, having been stolen from Eggman by Uma Arachnis.[9] Soon afterwards, Kodos went insane due to poisoning from Robotropolis' pollution, going on a rampage that led to a battle between him and Arachnis.[10] He became fixated on the Sword, and later set out to find it only for Sally to recover it and use it to defeat him.[11][12] She was able to liberate all of the remaining Robians inside the city, but somehow it had no effect on the few roboticized Overlanders during the second raid.[12][13]

Sally would later use its power to free the herd of Rotor Walrus from Eggman's mind control, only to have it begin trying to impose its will upon her.[14] Sally held onto it briefly, but finally decided that she wished no further part of it and gave it to Arachnis' offspring, the Arachne Clan, to keep.[15] Unbeknownst to her, they were carrying on a mission started on by their mother, who as a member of the Dragon Kingdom's Gossamer Clan had learned by reading the Web of Fate that the Source of All would fall into evil hands, and thus set out to destroy its artifacts. Sally and the other Freedom Fighters would only learn this after traveling to the Dragon Kingdom and meeting the Bride of the Endless Reach.[16]

Use by the Arachne Clan and destruction[]

Over a year later, the Arachne Clan used the Sword to open a dimensional rift in the Egg Grape Chamber, releasing their master Ixis Naugus from the Zone of Silence. This resulted in the death of the Ancient Walkers in the Virtual Zone, who had been mortally wounded and who had sent Merlin Prower to recover the Sword and Crown in order to find a way to heal them.[17] Naugus took possession of the Sword and set out to obtain the Crown, only to find it in the possession of a recently returned Mammoth Mogul. The two wizards, their minions, and the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix did battle for the two artifacts as three separate groups until Naugus learned of Mogul's ties to his former brotherhood, the Order of Ixis. The Sword changed hands to Mogul, who used it to amplify his powers along with the Crown against his enemies with Naugus and the Arachne Clan joining his Destructix.[18] The artifacts, being used by Mogul, became corrupted; Elias tried to recover the crown only for it to cause him pain. As they were corrupted beyond salvation, Sir Connery, a Paladin of the Ancient Walkers, exhausted his life force to unleash the full power of the Sword of Light, a magical weapon that destroyed both Sword and Crown.[19]

The Sword of Light would later come into Elias's possession, and he "promoted" it to the new Sword of Acorns.[20]
