Create a swarm of dark clones which race down the track, clinging to your rivals and destroying the next item they try to use.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Swarming Darkness is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

The Swarming Darkness takes the appearance of three shadows with a purple cube-like trail flowing from beneath their feet, both as an icon and on the tracks.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Swarming Darkness can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Mephiles. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Swarming Darkness if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy when she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Swarming Darkness by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user sets loose the a trio wave of shadows which will travel down three separate lanes in front of the user side-by-side, hitting any rival character that it comes in contact with until it wears off. If a rival character is hit with any of the shadows, they will be slowed down and a shadow will float around the top of their head. In addition to this, a curse is placed on the player and the next power-up they click on at the bottom of the HUD will be destroyed and rendered unusable. Once the power-up is destroyed, the rival character can return to their normal speed. The curse will be indicated by a third of the HUD circle's arc glowing purple. A rival character can only take the hit from three Swarming Darkness at a time; when this is done, the full HUD circle will glow purple. Additionally, one shadow will appear over the rival character's head depending on how many times they were hit with the item (including Dark Embrace and Stalking Shade). However, if any character has four shadows in any moment, all shadows will disappear, causing the player much higher damage, lose even more RIngs and slow down for couple of seconds. To avoid the Swarming Darkness, the playable character has to step out of its lanes or jump over it.

The Swarming Darkness can be upgraded by leveling the user up to levels 4, 10, and 16 respectively. For the level 4 upgrade, there is a chance of getting two Swarming Darkness from an Item Box. At level 10, there is a chance to pick up three Swarming Darkness from an Item Box. At level 16, there is an increased chance to pick up two Swarming Darkness from an Item Box.
