Go forth and unleash Super Sonic's new power.

— Notification, Sonic Frontiers

Super Sonic 2[note 1] (スーパーソニック2[note 2] Sūpā Sonikku Tsū?), also known as Starfall Super Sonic,[1] is a power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the advanced Super State of Super Sonic, achieved by completing Master King Koco's trial to temper his cyber corruption into newfound power. After The End possessed the defeated Supreme, Sonic empowered his Super form even further into this state. After using it in this one occasion, Sonic lost the power-up permanently after using the full extent of his cyber corruption as Super Sonic Cyber,[note 3] in order to destroy The End's physical form.

Appearance[]

When Sonic uses cyberspace energy to empower Super Sonic into Super Sonic 2, Super Sonic remains largely physically unchanged, but his golden aura is accompanied by a secondary crimson-red aura, his body gains a crimson outline, and his red eyes change to cyan blue. The golden sparkles emanating from Sonic's body are accompanied by blue sparkles, red wisps, and general sparks of energy.

Overview[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Super Sonic 2 is the advanced state of Super Sonic that Sonic achieved by harnessing and mastering the cyber corruption although not to its full potential. It appears only in The Final Horizon.

During his battle against the titan Supreme, possessed by The End, Sonic empowered further beyond his Super State, with cyberspace energy, to become Super Sonic 2 in order to easily inflict more damage to it. After sending it to the air, via his attacks, Dr. Eggman told Sonic to go into Supreme's repurposed rifle for a final attack. Inside the rifle, Sonic had no choice but to fully utilize his cyber corruption to achieve the full potential of the form.

After using it to annihilate The End for good, Sonic sustained battle damage and immediately reverted back to Super Sonic, unconscious and drifting in the earth's orbit, covered in bruises and scrapes.

Power and abilities[]

As Super Sonic 2, Sonic retains all of the powers of Super Sonic with an increase in power and speed. Whereas Super Sonic was unable to inflict significant damage to Supreme when corrupted by The End, Super Sonic 2 is able to damage the empowered titan. Most importantly, Super Sonic 2 gains the ability to Perfect Parry any attack, including cyber corruption attacks that Super Sonic is normally unable to deflect.

Super Sonic 2 is able to perform stronger versions of his attacks, such as using Sonic Boom at high speed against The End's avatar and being able to forcefully launch its rifle out of its socket (and later dozens of feet into the air) with a single Cyloop.

Weaknesses[]

As with its previous state, Super Sonic 2 uses tremendous amounts of energy, and it is maintained by consuming Ring Energy. Upon running out of this energy, Sonic will fully revert back to normal. It is also possible for Sonic to be forced out of the powered-up form by extraordinary external force, such as attempting to deflect massive energy attacks made of cyber corruption.

Trivia[]

  • This form is identified as Super Sonic 2 only in the game files of Sonic Frontiers, and is simply referred to as "a powered up Super Sonic" (パワーアップしたスーパーソニック?) elsewhere.[2] This suggests that "Super Sonic 2" may just be an internal codename for the transformation, used to differentiate it from Super Sonic's code name; "supersonic.pac".
  • The "Super Sonic 2" code name and appearance of the Super Sonic 2 power-up may be in tribute to Dragon Ball's Super Saiyan 2, and/or to the angelic Ultra Instinct technique from the same series, which shares a similar demeanor and set of moves.
  • Super Sonic 2 is the first new power-up that Sonic has undergone in a video game since Sonic and the Black Knight (2009).
