The Super Ring[1] (スーパーリング[2] Sūpā Ringu?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a variant of the Giant Ring that flashes in multiple colors.
Description[]
The Super Ring's size and proportions are nearly identical to those of the standard Giant Rings. As such, they look like large, thick wedding rings that spin around. Unlike Giant Rings however, Super Rings flash in multiple colors.
Overview[]
In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Rings replace the giant Rings in Zones from Mushroom Hill Zone onwards. Like the standard giant Rings, Super Rings are hidden in rooms throughout the Zones, with no prerequisite to make them appear. Such rooms can usually be found behind breakable walls, inside small holes, on hidden routes or other places where only a certain playable character is able to get. Touching a Super Ring will take the player to the altar in Hidden Palace Zone, where they can go to a Sonic & Knuckles Special Stage.
When the player first touches a Super Ring while having Chaos Emeralds with them, the Emeralds will transform into inert Super Emeralds, and the regular giant Rings from then onward will be replaced with Super Rings if the player collected all seven Chaos Emeralds. The exception to this is the giant Ring Sonic, Tails or Knuckles can encounter near the beginning of their version of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1, which will always be a Super Ring regardless of the number of Chaos Emeralds the player has. As with normal giant Rings, Super Rings will not respawn once the player has used them; however, after beating the game on a save slot, the player can use the Level Select-like feature on said slot to replay a Zone, in which Super Rings will reappear.
After the player has obtained all seven Super Emeralds, Super Rings will merely grant them fifty Rings instead.
Trivia[]
- In the original version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, since Rings share the same color palette with the game's HUD, approaching a Super Ring will make the HUD and nearby Rings flash the Super Ring's color. However, this has since been corrected in Sonic Origins and its expansion Sonic Origins Plus, due to the different game engine.
