Sunset Hill (サンセットヒル Sansettohiru?) is the second Zone of Sonic Advance 3. It is one of the parts of the earth that Dr. Eggman created when he broke the planet apart with Chaos Control.
Description[]
Sunset Hill is a Green Hill-esque area featuring many waterfalls and a dusk setting that gives it a romantic feeling.[1] The higher ground is composed of wooden structures with varied patterns, some of them also repeating in the natural grassy floor in the lower levels. Palm trees adorn the foreground, with lamppost-esque structures among them.
Story[]
After traveling through Route 99, Sonic and Tails would soon come across Sunset Hill and would encounter Knuckles along the way. Afterwards, the heroes proceeded to defeat Eggman and Gemerl again, and went on to Ocean Base.
Gameplay[]
Unique gimmicks in Sunset Hill include water slides, tall, segmented springs that recoil the player a short horizontal distance in an upward direction, Bungee Ropes, and vertical poles which the player can slide down and jump off of to either side using and . There are also large, slow-moving floating platforms that can either assist the player in navigating the stage or crush the playable characters, and bottomless pits that are arranged throughout the Zone. Act 1 introduces water mechanics to the game, albeit requiring Knuckles to access.
Overview[]
Act 1[]
Act 2[]
Act 3[]
Sunset Hill Act 3 ends with a boss fight against Gemerl, repeating the same attack pattern as last time and going down in four hits (two on Easy mode). If this Act is completed with Sonic in the lead (although at this point, the only other possible combination would be Tails-Sonic), a cutscene will play. It will feature Sonic and Tails meeting Knuckles, who expresses his desire to support whatever are they doing, to what Sonic just says that they do not need any help right now. Knuckles, even angry at this, is unlocked for the main game and Time Attack modes.
Boss[]
The boss of Sunset Hill is the Egg Ball No.2, with the fight taking place in a circular arena. Dr. Eggman and Gemerl will appear in a large wheel which comes rolling down the right-hand side of the arena. Eggman will laugh and then continue rolling; from this point on the character is vulnerable.

Animation[]
Sonic Prime[]
Sunset Hill makes a cameo appearance in Sonic Prime. In the episode "No Escape", Sonic has a flashback to his and Tails' time in Sunset Hill. After progressing through the Act as average, Sonic and Tails encounter Dr. Eggman and Gemerl in the Egg Ball No.2. After the two sides fight, Eggman and Gemerl are defeated by the heroes and the Egg Ball No. 2 is destroyed with the two in it, with the two heroes celebrating afterwards.
Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Sunset Hill appears as a location in Knothole Village prior to the Super Genesis Wave. Unlike its game counterpart, this version of Sunset Hill appears to be more of a beach.
Although unseen, it can be inferred that Sunset Hill also exists after the Super Genesis Wave in a similar form to its game counterpart, as the events of Sonic Advance 3 are stated to have taken place in the altered timeline.
Trivia[]
- In Act 3, there is a part of the Zone that resembles a part of Act 2 of Angel Island Zone from Sonic Advance.
- The music for this Zone is a remix of the theme of Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. The music also has some elements of the theme of Central City in Sonic Battle.
