The Straw[1] (ストロー[2] Sutorō?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, hummingbird-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.
Appearance[]

Taking on the appearance of a hummingbird, the Straws are Badniks that are colored green with a yellow beak. Their head is large and round, and their body is slightly smaller. Their body has holes for their wings, tail, and head, with silver lining around them. Their tail is long and thin, and their wings flutter through the air at an impossible counting rate, similar to actual hummingbirds.
In the IDW Publishing comics, the Straws would also be shown to have an alternative more modernized design similar to the Badniks from Sonic Colors, with their eyes now having cyan pupils and black sclera, as well as their wings now being completely neon and more holographic similarly to the modernized designs for the Buzzer and Buzz Bomber.
Overview[]
The Straws appear exclusively in Sonic Advance 2, where they can be encountered in Sky Canyon. They are hummingbird Badniks found in threes. They flutter through the air and dive-bomb any approaching threats. The playable character can easily destroy a Straw with any attack such as a Spin Jump. Upon their destruction, Straws will release an Animal.
Powers and abilities[]
Straws are capable of flight, which they use to help dive-bomb any threats nearby. Straws also come in packs of three, giving them a higher chance to successfully attack someone.

A Straw, from Sonic the Hedgehog #65.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, several Straws and other Badniks helped defend the Egg Base Delta against Knuckles, Vector, Espio, and Charmy when the group broke into the city to begin attacking the Badniks after thinking that them and Dr. Eggman were the ones who stole their relic. However, once Dr. Eggman informed Knuckles and the Chaotix that he had no involvement in stealing their relic, the heroes would stop attacking the Straws and other Badniks while proceeding to leave the base.[3]
Later on, several Straws were among the many Badniks lead by Dr. Eggman on his way to Sequin in order to track down the seventh Chaos Emerald.[4]
Trivia[]
- A similar Badnik from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II named Zoomer would posses a near identical attack pattern to the Straws, as both Badniks are based on birds and attack their foes by dive-bombing into them. However, it is unknown if the Zoomers were based on the Straws during development or if it was just purely coincidental.
