This deadly floater is programmed for destruction.

— Description, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

The Stinger is an enemy that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a mass-produced model of Destruction Troops created by Lyric the Last Ancient.

Appearance[]

The Stingers are orange robots with grey joints. They have a round torso with a large cannon attached on the bottom and cone-shaped forearms with two claws for fingers. For a head, they have a large red eye with green sclera, half-closed eyelids and a "v"-shaped horn on top. Down their spine they have layers of spiked arches.

Overview[]

Destruction Troops comic

A Stinger excavating for Lyric, from Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

Five millennia ago, Lyric the Last Ancient created the Stingers in the Robot Facility to help him destroy the earth's lifeforms and conquer it.[1] During an attack on the remaining Ancients however, the Stingers were shut down when Lyric got imprisoned.[1][2] When Lyric escaped in the present-day, he recovered the Stingers to search for the Crystal Shards and battle Team Sonic too.

The Stingers are found in Seaside Beach and the Robot Facility. In gameplay, they normally stay in a stationary position in midair on standby. When spotting the player though, they take aim for a few seconds before firing shots that temporarily home slightly in on the characters. After flying for a few seconds however, their shots will disappear. Often, the Stingers are placed (sometimes in rows) so the player can cross gaps or reach out-of-reach areas by skipping across the Stingers with the Homing Attack. However, destroying a Stinger will only cause a new one to respawn later on to take its place. Additionally, the thirteenth Toy the player purchases from Q-N-C's Toy Shop will be a Stinger figurine.

After Team Sonic and Shadow defeated Lyric, the Stingers were stopped once more.

Personality[]

The Stingers are first and foremost mindless and silent drones unwaveringly loyal to Lyric the Last Ancient, having been programmed to obey his every command.[1] The Stingers are in particular deadly robots programmed solely for destruction.

Powers and abilities[]

The Stingers can float in midair and are able to fire missiles or laser beams from their cannons.

Trivia[]

  • The Stingers' abilities and attack patterns are virtually identical to the Armorillos'.

His race was devoted to peacefully controlling the world’s resources. Driven mad by power, Lyric turned on his fellow Ancients and took control of the resources. Building an army of robots programmed to obey his every command, the deadly snake-like villain set out to destroy everything organic and create a world of twisted metal and robots. However, just before he could successfully take over, he was attacked by the last surviving Ancients and imprisoned forever. With his army shut down and his plans ruined, he waited in prison plotting his revenge. Years passed and Lyric began to give up hope. That is, until Sonic comes across him. Now with his army rebooted, and his plans in place, the only thing stopping Lyric from total victory is Sonic and his friends."
