A devious power-up that pickpockets an opponent's item.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

Steal is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Projectile Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

Steal takes the appearance of a Dark Chaos Chao, both as an icon and on the tracks.

Overview[]

Steal profile

Metal Sonic using Steal, from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.

In gameplay, the Steal can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Steal by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, the user summons a Dark Chaos Chao which will disappear for about a second afterward. During this time, the Chao will target a random rival character and steal one of the Trap or Projectile Items (except other Steal) they currently have and bestow it to Metal Sonic (Metal Sonic Mach 3.0). When this happens, the affected opponent will have pink smoke covering up the stolen Item on the HUD in question before being removed. This power-up cannot be avoided, even if the opponent has the Shield or Invincibility active. Upon receiving the stolen Item, Metal Sonic (or Metal Sonic Mach 3.0) can use the stolen Item as if it were his own. However, the stolen power-up's effects will depend on the level of the Steal Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 have.

The Steal can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. For each upgrade, the level for stolen power-ups will be increased, thereby giving the power-ups acquired with Steal better effects.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to the 2.11.0 update for Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Steal could target Boost type power-ups as well.
  • Prior to the 4.22.0 update, it was possible to steal another Metal Sonic's 'Steal'.
  • Except other 'Steal's and boost items, Steal cannot steal clone attack items like Psy-Chlone and Grimions.
