The Star Pointer,[1] also known as Icedus (アイスダス Aisudasu?)[2] in Japan, is an enemy that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It is a Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik and a variant of the Orbinaut series.
Appearance
The Star Pointer is similar to Orbinaut with light-grey color scheme and orange line, but it also has four balls spinning around its central sphere that are made of ice.
Overview
The Star Pointer appears at IceCap Zone, where it slowly moves around. When it sees the player, the Badnik slowly fires off its four balls of sharp ice one at a time. Typical for every Orbinaut, the Badnik becomes vulnerable once it sends its ice balls.
If the player has obtained Thunder Shield, all ice balls will get disintegrated when they come in contact with the shield. The player can also go through the ice spikes to defeat the Star Pointer directly. The player can also use Insta-Shield to defeat the Star Pointer with its surrounding ice balls at the right timing.

Star Pointers also make a short appearance in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic issue 41, as joining with Penguinators in an assault on the Ice Cap Zone against Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna. Even as these badniks released their icy balls to them, Sonic and Knuckles still managed to find vulnerable spots and destroy them.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Star Pointers were first featured in Sonic the Hedgehog #276 as part of the Artika Egg Army's attack force.
