Send a dark clone to attack one of your rivals directly, clinging to them and destroying the next item they try to use.

— Description, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

The Stalking Shade is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Trap Item used primarily to attack rivals.

Description[]

The Stalking Shade takes the appearance of the face of a shadow with its singular eye glowing and a spiral wave of purple energy behind it. On the track, it takes the form of a singular shadow floating above.

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Stalking Shade can only be obtained at random from Item Boxes by Mephiles. As with most other Items, Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 can also use the Stalking Shade if they use the Steal Item, or Fortune Teller Amy if she uses Lucky Draw or Wall of Cards to steal it from the aforementioned user.

Once obtained, the player can utilize the Stalking Shade by pressing its icon on the bottom of the HUD. When used, a shadow will appear above the rival character's head before swooping down to attack them. If a rival character is hit with this, they will be slowed down and a shadow will float around the top of their head. In addition to this, a curse is placed on the player and the next power-up they click on at the bottom of the HUD will be destroyed and rendered unusable. Once the power-up is destroyed, the rival character can return to their normal speed. The curse will be indicated by a third of the HUD circle's arc glowing purple. A rival character can only take the hit from three Stalking Shades at a time; when this is done, the full HUD circle will glow purple. Additionally, one shadow will appear over the rival character's head depending on how many times they were hit with the item (including Swarming Darkness and Dark Embrace). However, if any character has four shadows in any moment, all shadows will disappear, causing the player much higher damage, lose even more RIngs and slow down for couple of seconds. To avoid the Stalking Shade, the playable character has to step out of its lane.

The Stalking Shade can also be upgraded by leveling the user up to level 6 and 12 respectively. At level 6, the player will increase the chances of getting two Stalking Shades from a single Item Box, while at level 12, it increases this chance to three.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to 4.23.0 update, the Stalking Shade has chance of guaranteed pickup x2/x3.
