The Squid is a giant robot at half the size of Asura. Despite its name, its body plan is somewhat reminiscent of a crayfish, although it has several flexible spines or tendrils resembling the arms of its namesake. These spines are arranged around its rounded upper body, which also has a "face" consisting of three thin yellow visors arranged vertically (similar to the eyes of Metal Madness). Its primary limbs include two large, flat arms ending in lobster-like claws, and a lower body resembling a stylized dolphin tail or a high-tech floor scraper.
The Squid is mostly gray in color, with black covers on the undersides of its body and glowing yellow lights on its limbs.
History[]
Sonic Frontiers[]
The Squid was one of many Guardian robots constructed by the Ancients as a protector of their home, the Starfall Islands. It is unknown how many were originally created or if they participated in the battle against The End, but a few models survived to the present day, long after their creators' civilization collapsed.
Sonic the Hedgehog can encounter Squid on Kronos Island. Squid also appeared on Chaos Island, including a special one that Sonic used the trail of as a means to evade Knight's assault in their first encounter; said encounter ended with the Squid being destroyed by Knight's spinning shield.
Powers and abilities[]
The Squid continuously generates a broad stream of purple energy from its tail; this "roadway" is solid enough for Sonic to run on and drastically lengthens when the Squid is engaged in combat. They are also capable of cutting it off in short bursts whenever they feel like it, though only one Squid used this functionality. The robot can also fire energy projectiles from its appendages or use its main arms for powerful melee strikes, as well as project a defensive shield.
Boss battle[]
The Squid is a boss that can be fought in the open-zone areas of the Kronos Island and Chaos Island. Unlike most other Guardians, the Squid is constantly flying around the Open Zone, normally ignoring Sonic due to flying well above his level; the hedgehog needs to reach specific high platforms in order for the Squid to notice him and engage in combat.
Boss guide[]
Initially, the Squid will circle the player's vantage point and fire energy projectiles at them, keeping at a distance to prevent retaliation. The player must have Sonic jump onto the floating roadway the Squid generates behind it; this will prompt the Guardian to flee as Sonic gives chase. The player's movement is automated, but they can still Quick Step between the roadway's three lanes, jump, or Boost as they chase down the Squid. The robot will fire volleys of energy balls down the lanes of its trail; it will either fire at each lane once or fire two volleys down the side lanes, one volley down the middle lane, and finally two volleys down the side lanes again. In all cases, the projectiles can be avoided by Quick Stepping onto a vacant lane.
Eventually, Sonic catches up to be in range for a Homing Attack on its face. Once hit, the Squid begins hovering in place, surrounded by a circular platform that allows the player to attack the Squid directly. In this state, the Squid will attempt to attack by stabbing both arms in front of itself; it can also raise a barrier to deter the player if they land enough hits in succession. After some time passes, the Squid will resume flying away; Sonic will automatically jump back onto its roadway and the battle repeats until the Squid is defeated.
After defeating the Squid, it will drop one Portal Gear; its circular platform vanishes shortly afterwards, making Sonic fall to the ground. Unlike Fortress, it only flies above accessible parts of the Open Zone, (except for one found during the first encounter with Knight) preventing Sonic or the Portal Gear from falling into the void.
The Squid was first revealed as a unnamed boss in the exclusive gameplay footage during the Sonic Central online presentation on 7 June 2022.[1] Shortly after, the exclusive coverage of the game published by Game Informer originally referred the boss enemy as the Flyer before the final name was then revealed during the playable demo at the Gamescom trade fair in August 2022.[2][3][4]
