The Spiny[1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, urchin-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and the counterpart of the Spiny from an alternate dimension set in the recent past.
Appearance
The Spiny is one of the few Badnik models whose design is not derived from an animal, though comparisons can be drawn to barnacles and anemones.
Spinys are very small, with two eyes with a yellow sclera jammed close together near a red spout at the top of their bodies. Around this spout prong out several triangular metal flaps which can unfold like a flower blooming.
Overview
In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Spinys are enemies found in both Acts of Chemical Plant Zone. In gameplay, they either appear alone or in pairs. They can also be found on the ground or on the walls where they move back and forth. They slowly crawl around their domain, waiting for enemies to approach. When a target is sighted, they will stop for second and unfold their flaps, before shooting out a damage-inducing energy ball. If a Spiny fires an energy ball while sticking to walls, the projectile will fall faster. These projectiles can be deflected by using Shield-derived power-ups or through Mighty's Spin Attack. Otherwise, Spinys can easily be destroyed by attacking their heads with a Spin Jump. Doing so will release the Animals inside of them and award the player with 100 points.
