For the move in Sonic Adventure, see Spin Hammer Attack.

The Spinning Hammer Attack[1] is a move featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a technique used by Amy Rose where she twirls around with her Piko Piko Hammer while dropping through midair.

Description[]

Amyspin

The Spinning Hammer Attack is very similarly to the Spin Hammer Attack, but without the dizziness drawback. When performing this move, Amy pulls out her Piko Piko Hammer while in midair and swirls it around while falling straight downward to destroy any target below her.[2]

In gameplay, this move is useful for reaching targets that appear below Amy with an attack just as she flies/jumps over them while allowing the player to damage enemies, break weak obstacles and certain platforms, and open Item Boxes in Amy's path. If Amy hits an enemy with this move, she will bounce higher into the air while continuing the attack.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Advance []

The Spinning Hammer Attack made its debut in Sonic Advance, where it went by the name Hammer Whirl[3] (空中回転ハンマー Kūchū Kaiten Hanmā?, lit. "Midair Spin Hammer"). In this game, it is one of Amy's standard attacks. To perform the Spinning Hammer Attack in gameplay, the player must press down on Controlpadds and GameboyB at the same time while jumping.

Sonic Advance 2[]

In Sonic Advance 2, the Spinning Hammer Attack is referred to as the Mid-Air Hammer Swirl[2] (空中回転ハンマー Kūchū Kaiten Hanmā?, lit. "Midair Spin Hammer"). In this game, it serves both as one of Amy's regular moves and her Stop 'n' Slam maneuver.

When used in Sonic Advance 2, the Spinning Hammer Attack will bounce Amy back up into the air should it hit the ground. To use the Spinning Hammer Attack as a regular move, press GameboyB while jumping. To use it as a Stop 'n' Slam maneuver though, press down on Controlpadds and the R Button at the same time after being launched into midair by gimmicks like the Spring and Ramp. When used as the latter maneuver, the Spinning Hammer Attack will not cancel the momentum Amy receives from the Boost Mode.

Sonic Advance 3[]

In Sonic Advance 3, the technique is referred to as the Spinning Hammer Attack.[1] and serves again as one of Amy's standard moves and her Stop 'n' Slam maneuver. In this game, it retains its traits from Sonic Advance 2.

To use the Spinning Hammer Attack as a standard attack, Amy must have Sonic the Hedgehog or Knuckles the Echidna as her partner. To perform this version of the Spinning Hammer Attack in gameplay, the player must press down on Controlpadds and GameboyB at the same time while in mid-jump. To use the Stop 'n' Slam edition of this move however, Amy must have Cream the Rabbit as her partner. To perform this Spinning Hammer Attack in gameplay, press down on Controlpadds and the R Button at the same time after being launched into midair by gimmicks like the Spring and Ramp.
