The Speed 5000[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic X comic series published by Archie Comics. It was a vehicle-transforming robot given to Sam Speed by Dr. Eggman in order to trick him into defeating Sonic the Hedgehog.
Appearance[]
In its car form, the Speed 5000 greatly resembles Sam Speed's own car, although it has a much sleeker, thinner body. Its body is primarily red with some white parts. When transformed into a plane, it dons wings, but still retains its vehicle appearance.
Its true form is a humanoid robot. While it retains most of its basic colors, it gains a head with orange eyes and a white face. Various parts of the car make up its massive, thick arms and legs.
History[]
Archie Comics[]
After Sam Speed was once again outshined by Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman showed up in a disguise with the intent of tricking Sam into helping him defeat hedgehog. He introduced himself as a car and speed enthusiast, and gave the Speed 5000 to him, which Sam quickly came to love. The Speed 5000's computers then announced a fire at the Sapphire Sea Refinery, prompting Sam to race out with his new car. Along the way, he ran into Sonic and easily passed him.[1]
Arriving on the scene first, Sam transformed the Speed 5000 into a plane and poured water out of it to take out the fire. No sooner did Eggman reveal his true plan and had the Speed 5000 transform into a humanoid robot to battle Sonic. Although Knuckles the Echidna came to Sonic's aid, they were still unable to defeat the Speed 5000. It was not until Chuck Thorndyke, through Sam's wrist communicator, sent a signal that stopped the Speed 5000 for a second, allowing Sonic and Knuckles to finish it off.[1]
Trivia[]
- Speed 5000 is designed as an homage to the Transformers franchise. The story in which the Speed 5000 appears was written by James McDonough and Adam Patyk, who previously wrote several Transformers comics for Dreamwave Productions.
