For Special Stages in general, see here.

Special Stages are a series of special levels that appear exclusively in Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World.[1] The Special Stages in this game are loosely based on the ones featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, it is also very similar to the ones seen in Knuckles' Chaotix.

Overview

The Special Stages takes place in space-like void with floating blue spheres, red spheres, yellow spheres, and rainbow-colored spheres, which the player has to collect within a time limit. While the Chaos Emerald hangs out in the open, it is protected by a force field that remains until the player collects every sphere. Collecting 5 of a certain colored sphere (as rainbow is every color, one doesn't have to make a group of only rainbows with them) makes a magnetic-like field that attracts nearby spheres (or in Multiplayer mode, it can attract items). If the player doesn't maintain this for a certain amount of time or replace the chain with another single-colored chain, the field will disappear. Another item is an electric item that temporarily grants extra reach for the magnetic-like field, and will provide one if necessary. There are also time items, some that increase the time limit, some that decrease it. There are walls in some areas that the player must navigate through. Bumping into one will knock the player back and temporarily stun the player. The player is able to move Sonic through the void by using the gyroscope to direct Sonic and can speed up by boosting.[2]

These Special Stages are featured in the game's multiplayer mode.
