SpecialEffect is a charity based in the United Kingdom founded in 2007.[1] It specialises in helping physically disabled people, specifically children, play video games. Throughout the years, SEGA has made frequent collaborations with SpecialEffect to help raise money for the charity.

History[]

In July 2011, Dave Moran ran in the Asics British 10K London Run while dressed as Sonic to raise money for SpecialEffect.[2]

In November 2012, two framed pictures, one of a render of Sonic, along with another featuring an original concept sketch drawn by Yuji Uekawa were auctioned off on eBay with all proceeds going to SpecialEffect.[3]

SpecialEffect attended Summer of Sonic 2013 where they set up a booth where they showcased their work in making gaming accessible for people with disabilities. Additionally, all funds made from merchandise sold at the event went directly to the charity.[4]

In December 2013, Simon "Honeydew" Lane, of the YouTube channel "Yogscast" was added to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed as part of a charity drive to aid SpecialEffect, with all proceeds going to the charity.[5][6]

Since 2015, SEGA have frequently collaborated with SpecialEffect's GameBlast, helping raise money by having both SEGA reps and fan streamers collectively host livestreams playing through various games while having all the donations and money made from the streams go to the charity.[7][8][9]

SEGA has also released various bundles featuring various games, including ones from Sonic the Hedgehog in association with HumbleBundle with the sales going not only to SpecialEffect, but Make A Wish, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Willow, and GamesAid as well.[10][11][12][13]

In May 2018, Hardlight brought a custom Sonic Dash-themed car, which was a refurbished 1999 BMW 528i, to the Twin Town Challenge 2018 where it drove along with 100 other cars from Oxfordshire, England to Le Touquet, France. All the money being raised for SpecialEffect.[14] The car was later auctioned off.[15]

  • In addition to collaborations from SEGA, the Sonic the Hedgehog fan community have also hosted numerous events for the charity, including Raising Rings.[16]
